Default android keyboard on Desire

Hi guys,

I was wandering if it possible to install the default android keyboard on the Desire? Don't get me wrong, I love the HTC keyboard but am just trying out a couple of different keyboards out of interest.
So i anyone knows a link the the apk that would be brilliant. Just to clarify, I mean the one with black keys. I tried searching but could only find a modified version of the HTC one.

I don't know if you could get it to run, but you could try and extract it from a custom rom:

Download the zip (80MBish) then browse to /system/app its called something like latinIME.apk. I think there are 2 files you need. As I said though, honestly don'tt know if it will run.

Cheers Dan France, that worked a treat! I installed a file called LatinImeGoogle.apk and also LatinImeTutorial.apk (as you said I need to install two files, and thought the second might be linked!)
And it works a treat. its a really nice keyboard, I thoroughly recommend it! The prediction is as good as the HTC keyboard, and to be slightly narcissistic - it looks better, it kind of matches the dark theme of the desire.

I have accidentally got a warning about piracy a while back (did not realise it was) - so if this classes as piracy, please let me know and I will remove the thread, however DanFrance shared the link to the ROM so I presume it is ok?

It's part of the android open source project, so there's no reason you can't use it.

Oh, thats odd. It may not make any difference but I installed the tutorial one first. Then go into keyboard settings and enable it, then go into a program that uses text entry and select input method.
I cant think why it wont work on yours, sorry. Let us know how you get on

I've installed the files, tutorial first.

I have gone into the keyboard settings and checked the Android Keyboard box, accepting that it might record every single keystroke that I make however....

...When I go into anywhere that requires a keyboard, I am still faced with the default HTC keyboard.

What am I doing wrong?

I've worked it out. I didn't know that you can switch input method method by "long pressing" in the text input area

Is this the froyo keyboard, by the way?
