Help Needed to an iPhone Convert

Just got my HTC Desire HD a couple of days ago.

And I need help.

Is there a way to change the stock keyboard to one like the iPhones? I've gotten very used to the iPhones keyboard and I absolutely hate the DHD's.

How do I get Arabic keyboard? It's not in the settings.

Is there a way for me to delete stock apps that come with the phone but don't have a delete option?

Is there a way to have calendar events show up on the lock screen?

Why is it that the Market place does not ask for password when trying to download an app? Is there a way to set it to do so?

How do I sync this thing to my computer?

---

I've just moved from Apple to HTC so I'm having some teething pains:eek:

There isn't an android equivilent of the iPhone keyboard that I'm aware of. However, there are tonnes of alternate keyboards out there you can try. SlideIT, UltraKeyboard, Swiftkey and Shapewriter are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

You can't remove the apps without root access (which can't be done on the DHD yet), but you can prevent them from running. See this thread.

I too, am getting used to the DHD keyboard:

iPhone beats DHD on:
Accuracy: despite the bigger screen I find myself mis-hitting keys far more on the DHD than the iPhone. Maybe it's down to the touch screen?
Ease of use: inpaticualr, switching between numbers and letters was better for me on the iPhone.

DHD Wins on:
The options of words at the top of the screen, I used to hate it when the iPhone guessed wrong.
I prefer the Caps/Small letters actually being displayed on the keys themselves, as opposed to the iPhone which always had them in Caps, not matter what case you were typing in

I get same with touchscreen, very frustrating when trying to send a text quickly. I think its the processor freezing tho, seems to freeze then unfreeze, you end up with loads of letters coming up on screen that you hit 10 times before trying to get them to work. example: Hi illlll be over after wooooooooooooork ok bbbbbbbbbbye"

Why would you want so? If you want privacy/protection then you need to set an unlock password/pattern anyways. Unlike on an iPhone, the market isn't the only way to install apps, so it would be useless.

You don't. That's the beauty. Everything (calendar, contacts, emails) sync OTA. And even better, you don't need to sync your music with any software on your PC. Just drag and drop MP3s to your DHD's.

I use Swype, it's a far superior keyboard to the stock Android one and the iPhone one, I used the iPhone for 2 years and found Swype to be a lot better all around.

I am just about to get the DHD. It is my first Android phone so forgive me, I am a bit of a newb. I have seen Swype in action and love it but can't see how to get it on Android (Beta has ended).

Am I missing something? How can I get it?

You can't get it other than by getting into the beta.

The good news is the beta isn't too far off finishing and opening to the public :)

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Thanks.

How long does it normally take for a phone to get Rooted?

I agree with you. To me the keyboard just doesn't feel right.

I didn't know that the market wasn't the only way to install apps.

Most things can be synced though, if you want. What were you thinking of OP?

I hate iTunes and is one of the reasons I didn't get the iPhone 4 but one thing I really liked was that you could save the apps you downloaded onto your computer and delete it from the phone so you could use it late if you wanted to.

After using the phone for a couple more days.

I want to add my uni email account on my phone but for some reason it keeps saying that it can't connect to the server. The Uni uses Gmail and it worked perfectly with the iPhone.

Again why would you want to do this? Just uninstall the app and download it later from the market if you need it again. No iTunes no hassle.
Or there are various backup apps which you can use, but I think that some (all?) of them need root access.

By saving the apps I'll have my settings and save files of those apps available if I want to use the app again.

The only apps I know of that save your app data either require root (Titanium Backup) or are paid (My Backup Pro). Most of the free ones only back up the .apk, and don't even restore the market link, making them a worse alternative to restoring via the market.

Titanium Backup is awesome though, if you do root. But I don't know if the DHD temporary root, which isn't as good as proper root access, is good enough for TB.

I might be wrong as I own an X10 and Im over here as I want to sell the X10 for the DHD.

All the apps on the X10 save their folders and settings to the SD card so (and I say this all the time) think of your phone as a mini PC. When you delete a program on your PC and delete the program folders are left on the hard drive, so if you install that program again all the settings are the same.

Well your SD card is the hard drive so if you leave them folders for that app on the card then you can simply reinstall the app again and all settings are there.

If you want to clear the SD card off just mount the SD card copy the folders for the apps you have deleted and you can put them back onto the SD card any time.

Also search for app brain on the market or www.appbrain.com it's how the market should have been and you can scan apps from the website with a barcode scanner and it will take you to that app on the market :D
