Epic durability?

I just picked up a epic and my wife got the evo I am still undecided on which one I want but am loving the epic so far it just seems to have a cleaner os and I love swype. My real question is how is the durability of the device like scratch resistance of screen and does the slider hold up well those are the things I am worried about. Any info would be awesome.

I haven't damaged my phone but my gf has dropped hers lots of times. Surprisingly it doesn't look bad at all, the paint is chipped on the corners and the back has a scratch on it but other then that its 100%. The slider feels about as snug as mine (if it ever feels loose I just open and close it a few times and its good for a day or two) and her screen looks brand new. These phones are pretty tough.

Epic has a superior glass to the EVO. Epic has gorilla glass...so, you really don't need screen protector!

I've had my Epic for over a month and dropped it twice from about 4 feet (once it slid across a parking lot another 5 feet screen down). My bezel was scratched all around, but the screen itself is perfect. I got a black snap on case from Sprint just to cover the scratches b/c they were driving me nuts. It works perfect! IMO the phone is relatively durable. BTW, I use no screen protector and don't plan to.

I didn't buy a screen protector due to the gorilla glass. Just a case that I don't really like because it's kind of cheap.

I dropped mine from about 4' on to a concrete sidewalk. It bounced twice, and left a scoff on the corner of the snap on two piece case, but the phone and screen are fine. Glad I had the case on though, otherwise the phone itself would've gotten scratched.

I dropped mine on the concrete getting out of the car a few days ago... The back popped off but the phone was still on when I picked it up and My screen still held up. I haven't noticed any scratches or dents either . I can honestly say the Epic's are more durable than the EVO's and I'm glad I have one.

holy smokes...i'm amazed to hear about the drops and one slid 5' on concrete screen down? i have not dropped or scratched the phone...knock on wood.

I have the Sprint case with silicon inlay in the back. I am using it with Seidio (Platinum brand at Best Buy) belt clip...fits perfectly! I need quick access to my phone...thus, belt clip is ideal for me.

My friend has an iPhone with cracked glass, looks ridiculous.

I dropped mine today off a desk, nothing happened to it. No scratches since I have the Phantomskinz matte on it, which is pretty amazing (0 bubbles!!0.

I have that black 2 piece case from sprint, but I don't use it much. Its wayyy too bulky and makes the slide out keyboard..not..slide really well.

I also have Phantom Skinz on my Epic. Makes it easier to keep clean, easier to keep grease and gunk off of it. Samsung makes great hardware.

I own both Epic and EVO The Epic is hands down the better handset. The build quality is better on the Epic.

most glass faced phones, including the epic (and iphone) are pretty durable and i skip the screen protectors on them. i've dropped my epic from ~3 feet onto a concrete sidewalk, and it held up pretty well. the plastic on the corner is scratched, but that's about it.

as far as screen cracking, the iphone also has gorilla glass, and i'm sure you've seen the picts of the epics with cracked screens, so you can't say that the iphone is junk because of the cracked glass. comparing cracks is also a almost useless exercise- you'll have someone w/ one epic dropped from 1' that cracks, and another dropped from 6' that's fine- there are way too many variables to make general comments from those types of anecdotes.

I've been ultra concerned since getting my Epic(~2 months). Because I work construction, specifically an industrial/heavy commercial electrician. So far the site I've been on, is heavy industrial. The site I came from was underground, which meant I constantly got dirt into my pockets.
This means it goes in my carhartt pockets through out the day. My main concerns with phones has always been 1-the glass, 2-the slider and hard buttons(or any physical movements), 3-and open ports. Because it will experience a myriad sp? of conditions; dirt in pockets, metal shavings and shards, drops and falls, physical abuse(leaning against a rail rail, having something over the leg), I think you get the idea.
I came from having the HTC Hero. Which I had actually just started to like ater a year, only because I finally took the leap and rooted it. The screen was good, but after giving up on trying to use screen protectors, it was covered with hairline scratches. I liked it because of the minimal moving parts. Surprisingly I never had a problem with the track ball. But as an annoyance I did get dirt/grime built up in the cracks around the four main buttons, and I regularly took the back cover off to clean all the dirt out. And had issues with the charge and headphone port getting debris into them, which prevented plugging in.
With my Epic, I meant to get a screen protector asap. But it's never happened. And even after pulling my phone out a few times, feeling it rolling around in my pocket with metal shavings. And although it has scratches on the back, surprisingly the screen has no scratches, even hairline scratches. The slider I think is just as springy, and smooth as when I got it. The buttons haven't got any junk in them, in part because they're protected except when using them. And the charge port is as clean as when I got it, thanks to the cover. And have checked the battery compartmentbut have not had any real dirt issues. All in all, I love it. My only suggestion, is I'd like a plug for the headphone jack, but nobody offers that.

I don't concur. Not that the Epic is bad, but it's more "plasticy" feeling, the keyboard has acquired a bit of play and has slight key scratching. The Epics glass is certainly more durable, the rest of the case seems a bit easier to scratch. I'm not unhappy with the Epics build, but I'd give the Evo a very slight edge there.

I would second that.
I wish samsung would use metal instead of plastic. They're (manufacturers) are concerned over a few ounces. But i'd opt for a more durable, and solid feeling phone, even if it weighed more, every time.

I agree 100%. The "feel" is what I love about the EVO, but I really love my Epic. I wish their was a version without the slide out keyboard; I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.
