Using an Aria with no data plan

Its been my experience that, on AT&T, if you activate a smartphone, they will detect it and begin charging you for a data plan. We had this happen when my daughter swapped her GoPhone SIM into a used Blackberry.

I am on the $15 unlimited plan and I have been using a Samsung Jack for a year and now my Captivate. My wife has been using a Blackberry for over a year with no data plan.

AT&T enacted the forced data plan for all smartphones a year or so ago from what I read.

What $15 unlimited plan? AT&T?

Yes AT&T.

Years ago i was using an LG flip phone and the data plan was $15. Its bundled with 200 text messages for $4.99 (media max plan $19.99). I have used smartphones since then and have not been charged extra. I usually don't go over 1 gig a month, maybe thats way IDK. One time i put my sim in an iphone and within minutes i received a text saying that i need to upgrade my plan, pulled out the sim REAL fast lol.

It really depends. They do check occasionally but I'm not sure how often for the Aria. For phones such as iPhone and Blackberrys, they generally have a routine check or so I've heard fro ma friend.

I don't have a data plan and have never had one with my Aria and it's been going just fine for me. When you set up the phone / account, I simply went with use WiFi or so and then checked / turned off all data related things in settings and I haven't been charged for using data either.

Are you still today able to not have a data plan, or has AT&T detected your device yet?

Are any of you Aria users able to get by with the 200mb plan?

On my bb curve i average 60mb monthly from:
-browsing a few forums daily
-some fb checking
-use google maps 15days out the month
-i get about 15emails a day

Rarely mess with apps and games and never stream music/radio/vids. Think id still go over 200mb?
