How Do I Set Up Apps2sd Using Damage Controls Last ROM?

I am running Damage Controls last ROM and have been very happy with it except I have had constant low memory issues lately. I have done all the tricks and things that have been suggested except the apps2sd thing. I know it's in this ROM and I know how I have to back up my SD card to my PC and then use my recovery mode to format and partition my SD card with EXT 3 I believe. But then do I just check the Box for Apps2sd in Damages "control panel"? Will the apps move by themselves? Can you direct me to some instructions where I can read how to do this and become completely familiar with the process before I attempt it? I hope it's as easy as I am making it out to be here.

All help will be appreciated.........

Lisa

I don't use apps2sd but after reading your posts on here and on xda, I still believe you should do a fresh start with a new, more recent rom, with a developer who's still working on the Hero. Just my 2 cents. You have TB, that would take care of any worries about market downloads. Your contacts are backed up with google and most importantly you have the ability to nandroid. Nandroid your current setup and then try something new. If it's not what you want, nandroid back

Dear Andygu3,

I really appreciate your thoughts on my dilemma with this Hero. The thing is I really hate working on it. Everyone says how easy it is to root and rom and the root process alone took me four hours to do because I didn't understand what was happening in the process. Yes I downloaded the "manual" and I did the cut and past method and it did work but it was rather agonizing in the process. Then I set the phone down for a day and just enjoyed what I had accomplished. Then with some great coaxing from men like yourself I decided to take the leap to Damage Control's last rom. It was a 2.1 and it was very stable and sold as a vast improvement to the stock 1.5 I was running. I spent two whole days installing this as it didn't work and then my phone didn't work and on and on it was one problem after another until finally I nandroided back to 1.5 and swore I wouldn't touch the phone again. Then about a week later I had some time and I decided to restore the nandroid of the Damage Control rom and I worked with it and got it working and tweaked it out over a few months until I was really satisfied with it. I had super user problems that I over came and one little tiny problem after another that I was able to work out but all in all I am very satisfied with. I love the live wall paper when I unlock the screen and I like sense and on and on.

But all was going well until this memory thing hit me. I have been fighting this for about three months now and I have slowly but surely lost almost all of my memory. I think your suggestion to find a new Rom where the developer is still in it and go with that but I want one that will do what this one is doing. Besides, I don't have the gift that you guys have to fix these things and I have to surf and post on the forums to learn about whats going on. But also I read the horror stories of guys that have locked their phones up doing this. I have been there and had the tight chest over the damn thing boot looping and that kind of stuff. So I just don't run ahead and put things on this phone as I don't have the excess time it takes me to sort it out. At any rate I am going to be forced to do something with this phone sooner or later as I am literally running out of memory. I can't recover it any more and I guess the phone will just lock up one day and then I will have to do something with it. But I am surfing the forums trying to learn and get advice and I think this problem is very elusive as I haven't gotten to many responses other then to put on a new rom and do the apps2sd thing. I haven't found a consensus among the forum users on how to do that even so I have figured out how I am going to attempt it and if I lock the damn thing up I had nothing to loose. I will probably go buy an IPhone and get some real technology in my hands. Don't get me wrong, you guys have been a big help to me and got me through all this but it's been a tough row to hoe as they say.

I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate your help and suggestions. I just am feeling very frustrated at this point as there is no easy fix as far as I'm concerned. I keep hoping for a silver bullet where someone would say do this to that program and solve my problems. But I haven't found that yet. But thanks for your help and if and when I decided to finally put the fix on this phone, either fix it or break it for good I will certainly post my experiences.

I'll keep posting, looking for that silver bullet or for the one guy that can help me with the Damage Control Rom. But at this point I don't know which rom to choose other then to loose root and put the stock Sprint rom back on the phone with the bloat ware included.............

Have a wonderful day and thanks for your suggestions................

Believe it or not I took the time to read your long post, lol now with that said, your issue is simple as Andy mentioned, the hard part is done, the rooting process and the guts to tackle it, simply do a nandroid backup of what you have, and flash a new Rom better suited for your needs, and leave it stock for a few days and see how the memory issue is and how you like the Rom, then if you don't like it you simply restore your phone back to where you and no harm done. you can also PM the developer of your ROM and see what he suggest, worth a shot if your not willing to flash. FYI on a whim last night I decided to root and did so in less than 10 minutes and already had apps installed and screen shots of my screens. and a backup already done and stored both on the phone and my PC, I was going to wait for the weekend and said F**k it and hit the button to root, lol, also check this out, Hero by HTC:ROM Memory Leak Filling Up Internal...

Okay Gentlemen thanks for your help first.........

I have a 16gig card in my phone which I removed and put in the stock SD card. I formated and the through recovery I partitioned it to 256 swap and 512 on the ext 2 partition. Then I went and did the ext 2 to ext 3 thing and rebooted the phone. Booted up fine the second time. First time it lock up and I had to pull the battery. But I got it booted up and the phone is running fine. But I only gained 14mb of memory. I checked it with the Titanium Backup program as the newest version has a neat memory scale that show internal, sd card and apps2sd. I still have my internal memory 80% full. So I guess. Now I did the adb shell check and couldn't pull any apps to look at so I don't know if my apps2sd is working at all. I had a few apps2sd before all this but that routine gained me 14mb. So I'll use the phone like this for a couple of days and see what happens.

By the way, I'm looking at the Fresh Rom. Any comments on that? I saw some pictures of the screen and it has the sense clock/weather widget that I like. Also does anyone know if you can use a Titanium back up of programs from one rom to another? I do not sync my contacts or calendar with gmail but I have them backed up with Titanium. I actually sync with Outlook for this stuff..........

Again all comments appreciated...........

P.S. I checked out that Sprint Link and that was a year old but I went and looked into my BTS folder that it was talking about and none of those hog files existed there.......... But it was a good idea.........

Latest Update.............

After digging through the phone with root explorer and playing with it with the new reformatted SD card I can report that a few apps are indeed on the SD card but most all are not. All the apps are located in the data folder in the phone. Don't know how to move them over there. I can click on a few of my installed programs and they don't work because there data was sitting on the other SD card that I removed. So that is where my increased memory came from. So the reality is all the reformatting and partitioning didn't work.

Then to make thing interesting I turned OFF apps2sd through the DC control panel and rebooted the phone and it couldn't find sense and the phone would get all the way to the lock screen and then when I tried to open it I would get a forced close. So I pulled the battery. Put the old SD card back in, nandroided back and the phone is up and running again. I'm going to put that Partitioned SD card back in and use the phone. But I believe I have figured out what's going on. When ever there is an update on a program from the Market I install it and that eats memory. None of the programs increase that much in size if you look at them individually but they are all growing like a cancer. If I could actually get them on to the SD card as one gentleman told me my problem would be solved but I am having no success at doing that................

I checked out that Liquid Rom I believe that was the name and while it was crisp, clean and fast towards the end or reading all the threads there were issues cropping up with that one too. I keep thinking of Fresh as the way to go but no comments on that one..........

Extremely frustrated with this whole process but thanks for the help and suggestions you have provided so far............

Then to add insult to injury with my Nandroid Restore and my original SD card back in my ChainDD SuperUser program is not working for some reason. I have run into this before and I would just delete it and reinstall it and I would be up and running but now it's now listed in my Market Downloads anymore for some reason so I can't uninstall it there and in my Setting>Applications Manager folder there is no provision to delete it there so now I'm really stuck. This has been the story of my life with this phone and this is why I am so darn hesitant to do any thing too it except repair it when I absolutely have to...........

Oh the frustration continues..........

Well Don thanks for your help. But I never found the answer and I lost my SU in the pursuit of apps2sd. This is typical for me. Now I'm so gun shy of the damn phone if I run out of memory I'll just nandroid back to where it was running good and start over. I'm done. The damn phone beat me and I can delete all the programs that use root as I don't have access any more........ Look at the space I'll get back there............

Take care......... and thank you.......

Thanks Mahalocat..........

But I'm not following you on the 2.2. Not sure what that is or where to find it. On the root thing I have been down this path before. A few months ago I thought I lost root when all that was wrong was the SU. I was advised to get SU from the market and that is what I did and my SU was up and running again. But now I can't get it as ChainDD's SU is screwed up but it's still there. I can't even install anyone elses SU as I get a "conflict" message. This stuff is totally crazy to me. I think the bottom line is there is something wrong with this phone that goes way back. Possibly the only way to really do it would be a hard factory reset back to where ever that takes you. Who knows. But as I have said. The one thing that keeps this phone going is the ability to boot into recovery and use the Nandroid back up and restore. But the crazy thing about that is even if I go back to my last nandroid which was a week ago the SU still doesn't work now. That is totally crazy. So when folks say you can Nandroid back and have your phone like it was, well that is not 100% true. Those are the facts. So that should tell all of us something about this phone. Even the nandroid won't recover it 100%. So ponder that awhile.........

Anyway I do appreciate your help. If we were closer I would give you the damn thing and pay you to fix it. I am no expert and it just scares me now to even pick it up anymore..............

You're the best and enjoy your weekend........
