Root HOW TO: Change bootup/shutdown animations and sounds

Okay, I have seen more than a couple different inquiries (including some by me) on these topics in multiple places in the SF forums and elsewhere. Because of this I figured I would try and collect all the information regarding changing these things and put them into this one thread. If you think I am missing or forgot something, let me know and I can add it in (such as new files, clarification, etc).

Thanks to the respective creators of each file included in this thread. Without you guys we wouldn't even be detailing this process.

DISCLAIMER: This is intended to provide easy step-by-step directions to change bootup and shutdown animations and sounds. I take no responsibility if you screw up your phone attempting to follow these instructions. Read everything carefully.

Originally Skywalker's Blackhole bootup animation (reversed by angelikchaos into a shutdown ani):

PLEASE NOTE: You must be rooted. You must reboot in order for these changes to take effect. You should have Root Explorer (although I am sure there is a way with ADB commands as well though). You may want to create a backup (CWM or the like), just in case. Also, most of the people I have seen do this are running a version of Dirrk's/jt's kernel or a ROM like Adrynalyne's SC or the Community ROM (using OTB kernel), which allow boot/shutdown animations to be changed. The kernel you are currently using when attempting to change the animations must allow for them to be changed for this to work.


The file needed to change your boot-up animation should be a .zip file.
I successfully changed my bootup animation by doing the following:

Boot-up animation:
1) download a new boot animation .zip file (I put mine in /sdcard/downloads)
2) open Root Explorer
3) navigate to where you put the new .zip
4) copy the new .zip
5) paste it into /data/local
6) rename it "bootanimation.zip." (if it isn't already)

Also, if you want to change the startup/shutdown sounds:

Startup sound:
1) DL a new sound file
2) convert to a .wav file (using Winamp+.wav converter/iTunes)
3) put on SD card
4) open Root Explorer
5) navigate to /system/etc
6) rename "PowerOn.wav" to "PowerOn.wav.old"
7) navigate to where you placed the DL'ed .wav file
8) copy
9) paste into /system/etc
10) rename it "PowerOn.wav"

Shutdown sound:
1) DL a new sound file
2) convert to .ogg file (I used Winamp+.ogg converter)
3) put on SD card
4) open Root Explorer
5) navigate to /system/media/audio/ui
6) rename "shutdown.ogg" to "shutdown.ogg.old"
7) navigate to the DL'ed .ogg file
8) copy
9) paste into /system/media/audio/ui
10) rename it "shutdown.ogg"

OK very very easy
1] DL my zip: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
2] Put it on SDcard somewhere [doesnt matter where - I created a folder simply called Shutdown]
3] Open Root Explorer. Gotta have this. Pony up the $3.95 if you haven't yet.
4] Navigate to /system/media/video/shutdown and copy or move the existing shutdown sequence [26.png's]
4a]Hit Menu>Multi-Select>Select All>Copy or Move. I'd do move because if you do copy you have to come back and delete before putting the new ones in
5] Paste that wherever - basically it serves as a back-up or something to revert to in case. Again I just put mine in a folder within the Shutdown Folder called Shutdown default; whatever
6] Navigate to wherever you put my zip.
7] Shutdown.zip long press it and extract all. This sends it to sdcard/extracted.
8] Go to sdcard/extracted/Shutdown. You'll see all 63 png's.
8a] Again now, Menu>Multi-Select>Select All>Copy or Move
9] Navigate back to system/media/video/shutdown and paste. Make sure its empty before you paste.
**Note on my SF the 1st 26 png's display like the old verizon ones. Dont fret about that I dont know why it does but it does. Once pasted you're fine. The proper sequence will display on shutdown.
10] Close and power down to enjoy your new shutdown sequence.

Might seem complicated but I tried to make the above directions thorough thats all. Once DL'd this entire process literally should take 5 minutes.

So I had formerly used the code strings to disable boot/shutdown sounds but I just turned them back on. What the heck the Droid thing is kinda cool I suppose.
I also changed my boot from pink scribble to this one.
I hope these vids come out OK. My first one was 720p but thats ridiculous for this stuff. This should be good enough, I hope.

Seriously, though I re-enabled boot sounds, added both sounds [boot and shutdown], changed my bootanimation zip [and renamed the old pink one], and made these videos in like 10-12 minutes.

All we need to do is go to xda to remind ourselves that sometimes bad things happen to good people. So yeah, all the usual warnings apply. Seriously, though I re-enabled boot sounds, added both sounds [boot and shutdown], changed my bootanimation zip [and renamed the old pink one], and made these videos in like 10-12 minutes.

It is pretty easy to do. If anyone is thinking about doing it I hope this helps

Agreed. Yeah, I had my phone at my desk (in my hand), I just decided to shoot the video with my digital camera sideways and didn't care enough to redo it at the present time.

Either that or either of jt's with that whole bootanimation in the title. So yeah Im still on D02 1200LV. Or apparently the two kernels just posted today on IRC by jt also allow bootzips

Yeah but for some reason they don't work for everyone. I can't get an animation to play unless I have a custom kernel that has a boot animation. If I have that I can change them at will but go back to stock kernel and nothing. Its as though the animation is somewhere else. I can even remove the animation in system/media and data/loacl (if there is one) and it will still play the default Samsung Verizon boot animation.

Anyone figure that out yet?

Don't worry about it, we are here to help . As for the boot animation, I'm assuming you have a kernel that allows changing of boot/shutdown animations since you changed the shutdown. The bootanimation.zip can be put in either /data/local or /system/media, however I only included /data/local because I've been told it's easier since the phone looks in that folder first. Did you make sure the .zip file is named "bootanimation.zip"? What boot animation are you trying to use? Did you follow the directions exactly? If not, detail the process you went through and perhaps that may shine some light on something.

The kernel that you currently run must allow for boot animations/shutdowns to be able to be changed. This is why you can't change it in the stock kernel, because I don't believe that it allows it to be changed IIRC.

When you remove the default animation, do you actually delete it? What exactly do you do when you say remove? Sorry for asking a seemingly obvious question, but if it is still on the phone's memory somewhere I'd imagine it would just search for it until it found the file(s).

Yes sir. I believe I followed your instructions to a t. I do not however have a custom kernel running. I figured since I was able to install the shutdown animation that I would also be able to install the boot. I'm trying to install the scribble animation (green). That's what I installed for the shutdown also.

are you rocking a stock kernel? if you are id recommend jts non-vood 11/2 in rom manager (and xda)

d/l it and reboot. once booted, reboot into clockwork, go to advanced and wipe davlik cache. then you're good to go on a great non-oc kernel (been running it for 4 days and its really smooth for a non-voodoo)

This may be something I try. I just recently rooted, and I'm still running the stock kernel. I was able to get the shut down animation going, but not the boot one. I know this is probably for another thread, but I feel like I really need to continue reading up on non-oc kernels, and oc kernels, the nandroid install, and clockwork etc.

I've d/l rom manager, root explorer, and Ti backup, so hopefully I'm on the right track.
