is there anything coming out close to the ipad?

Steve,

If there isn't anything forcing you to buy one now, at least wait until early 2011. That is when all of the worthy Android Tablet competitors should be released. There are great examples now, but with Android not being optimized for Tablet form yet, I say wait till the next iteration of Android (which should come with a wave of tablets early next year).

Also, the next gen iPad should be announced early next year too. Would suck to buy a new toy soon, just to have a new generation released almost immediately.

The Android Tablets are just now hitting the market. There is going to be some nice hardware coming out by early 2011. The problem is that android isnt really ready at this point for Tablet computing. Granted at some point google will grant market access to tablets and you will have all the apps made for mobile, but dont expect any decent tablet designed apps till later next year.

I'm really disappointed there are no solid Android tablets coming out for the holiday season. After alot of research I caved and bought an iPad for the family for Christmas. I know there are better things coming but not soon enough.

Besides, we can easily make use of 2 tablets in this house so the iPad will never go to waste if and when we upgrade to a nice Android Gingerbread (and beyond) tablet in the future. :)

until the LG optimus makes it to market, i would right now choose between the samsung galaxy tab and the CM superion. but for half the price, i would go with the superion.

i have both the ipad and the superion but the lack of USB, flash and external storage is making me use the superion more and more these days

only drawback with the superion is its short battery life, about 5 hours. the ipad outlasts it easily. but it gets really bothersome lugging the sizable ipad in my bag.

If you don't need 3g connectivity and don't care about a front camera, I'd choose the archos over the superion. Much better pocessor, 3d graphics acceleration and more storage options. The only real limiting factor is the 256mb for app storage, which will get help in 2.2 with sd storage. The archos is also cheaper and has better battery life.

The Galaxy Tab is superiour to the iPad in everyway. I really don't understand what some people are thinking anymore.

So am I understanding this correctly? The tablets can't download apps from the market? Right now are you limited to what is loaded on the tablet?

I got the google market running within 10 minutes of getting it and did it right in front of the seller. And the whole process didn't take 2 minutes (including rummaging through my bag for the sd card).

Steve - As others have said - the market for Android tablets is about to change dramatically in about a month or two.

Having said that, I would give the upcoming Adam a look over. Here is a comparison of the Adam with the iPad, which in my opinion shows the Adam as much better.
Apple iPad Dethroned By Notion Adam Ink Tablet PC?|Website Technology Point

In terms of the Market, I don't know if the Market will be installed right out of the box, but the UI has been designed to handle regular market apps in what they call panels so that they look great even on the larger screen.

All of the hype about the Adam is just that though, hype. Until they release to consumers around the end of the year and get real users reviews, we are all just going on what the company Notion Ink tells us. But it really does look impressive.

I agree the Galaxy Tab is a great product, but I want a 10" screen. We have a Dinc and a DroidX in our house and we felt the 7" Galaxy was not big enough to justify a purchase.

I look forward to the rumored 10" Android tabs coming out next year. Motorola, HTC...?

Edited to add I read somewhere that the GTab will likely not be upgraded beyond 2.2 and I definitely want to hold out for 3.0.

I agree 100%. Honestly, I can't believe the major device manufacturers (specifically Moto and HTC) are skipping the holiday shopping season, not to mention the end of the fiscal year for most businesses (last minute write-off anyone). Obviously this is not completely their fault, since Google is partly to blame for not pushing out a tablet-optimized version of Android in time.

At this point, I just wish we had a few more details about an upcoming HTC or Moto tablet. I can imagine at least one of them is planning to conveniently "leak" some information before people jump on the iPad, GalaxyTab, or something else for the holidays.

In 1st quarter, most people aren't thinking of spending money, they're conserving after going a little overboard during the holidays on everything from gifts to travel.

What about the KIRF Apads that look like the ipad? how are they? I would pick one up to try...but like I said, for the ipad, the apps that are available for it are amazing..

Hi Steve - if the main/only thing that draws you to a tablet device is the apps - I have to say go for the iPad. The iPad has many many cool apps and as an app running device it rocks.

On top of running apps, Android tablets bring so much more potential than the iPad ever will which is what draws me to it. But you have to want those features. You really have to assess what you want to do with one of these to decide what device will be best for you.

If you break down and buy and iPad like I did expect to be buying something else by summer 2011.

I know the iPad2 is coming and I know the Droid Army will kick iPads @ss next year, but I couldn't wait. So my daughter will end up with my iPad.

Oh and as for flash you can view 99% of flash sites with video on iPad using the Skyfire browser. So yes the iPad does have flash for web video.

If you're into "true digital magazines" there is nothing on android to compeate with the iPad digital magazine apps.

Samsung themselves have said that the Galaxy Tab will indeed get 2.3 and 3.0.

Another vote for 10". I would like to get a tablet before xmas vacation to take with me. I was under the impression that I could load all my programs from my droid to the tablet?

Also, what are the shortcomings of the archos 10". I have an older archos 5" media device and it is a nice product.

I really don't want to have to get an ipad....

Yup, Android is missing the mark on this one. I really want the (don't hit me) Martha Stewart magazine app ported to Android, it looks fantastic. I'd love to be cooking a recipe from my Android tablet with it nicely set on my kitchen counter!

Not too many people apparently agree with that view:

Proprietary connector with no USB option and priced the same as the iPad? Sammy does not drop the price by $100, this device will limp along until the OLED device middish next year. Question is will they continue to channel stupid and not provide a USB option for charge and data on that device as well?

How is it you can bitch about a proprietary connector on a non-apple product when comparing to an apple product?

The problem with the sammy, 90% price, 10% marketing (lack of). I don't care if it is better. Without a lower price point than the ipad, people will look and say "gee, this one is a bigger screen for the same price" and then see the polish apple put on. 95 out of 100 people could pick both up and have an easier time using the ipad. I'm not a fan, but I am a realist.

I just can't believe we still haven't seen any leaked images or specs on the Motorola tablet. They're supposed to show it off at CES in like 6 weeks, and we haven't seen anything. I remember the days when we saw leaked images of a smartphone 10 months before launch.

Most recent reports/rumors, say the Moto tablet will be out in February though.
