Contacts/menu/display options/choose which contacts to display

It's a joke if you thought you were restricting all of your contacts from being viewed, because you can get in the 'backdoor' to ALL the contacts by going:
Messaging/new message/contacts!

As far as I can guess the option "which contacts to display" is NOT for security reasons ( Why the hell it should be) but for the convenience of the user so that he can skip those contacts which do not have a phone no. or are in the phonebook just because some account is synced with the phone.

Perhaps 'security' was a poor choice of words.
'Privacy' would be a better one.

No you still got it wrong, it is just a preference setting. I'd be upset if I could make a setting and then couldn't undo it later if I chose. If it was a multi user system or some public data then I'd be setting it for that, which is privacy and/or security. But not on a single user device like a phone. That's what lock screens are for.

No, it is not a preference setting.
There is no setting at all really.
It is programmed this way.
I just mentioned that if someone wanted to see all of your contacts, they just need to go in the backdoor as outlined above.

That is pretty much the same thing which the other person is trying to say. The setting which is in the menu is for the user HIMSELF to let him select which phone number he want to see in the phonebook and to prevent clutter.

The phone is NOT programmed to hide numbers from others and rightly so. If you want someone to not find out about some contacts in the phone dont hand over the phone to the person. As the phone is meant to be a private device of 1 single person the companies do not provide such options to hide no. from others.

I hear ya! I understand what you are saying.
But what do you do when your friend wants to see those recent pics you just took (maybe of her) and you've got some contacts you'd rather keep private?
Do you show her the pics and then quickly grab the phone out of this tech-savvy girl's hands?

Well Yes!

Or if you want to look for alternatives I had read earlier there are apps which can "lock" other apps so you can install the app and lock your phonebook and messaging option through that but then if the girl asks to unlock it then you are on your own!

Yeah seepage, I have made a mistake. For the vast majority of users this is no ' hole' or security lapse.

I admit I'm a crazy user with, ahem, different needs.
