Dropped my phone..crack

I had a couple of low height drops that didn't result in any dmage. The phone is actually really tough. But the other day I found out how tough it really is. I had it in my car between my legs and when I got out and stood up, down it went..face first on to an asphalt parking lot. It made a sound unlike it had before, and I knew right away :(

There is one small crack running from about 3 o'clock to about 1 o'clock running diagonally across the screen. Suprisingly, everything still works as it should and the crack hasn't spread. I do have a screen protector, and I think that is the only thing that may have kept it from being worse. I also had the hard silicone cover on as well.

A quick call to VZW to see what I could do..$90 for a claim through Assurion..:( Not really what I wanted to hear). I will admit that I did not check on claim deductable prices when getting insurance. I expected to hear $25 or $30 maybe; but not $90.

I can't upgrade again until July of next year, and I really hate this happened because I'm basicly stuck with the phone. I have no options other than filing the insurance claim or buying a new phone at full retail price.

Is there any fix for the screen I could possibly do myself, or am I just screwed?

Motorola MB810 Droid X touch glass screen digitizer New - eBay (item 320606659967 end time Nov-20-10 12:59:18 PST)

However, you aren't going to find a screen replacement for less than most of the cost of your deductible price. If you shop hard, you might find one for $20 cheaper, but it won't go below that I assure you. At least not for a high quality OEM replacement.

$90 really isn't bad for a replacement phone. I'd go that route.

$90 is cheaper then spending hundreds of dollars to get a brand new one. Although you're getting just a refurbished one through Asurion. Another option is to go on Ebay. Tons of Verizon phone's For Sale, whether you want your same one, or just want to buy a cheap one to get you by until you can upgrade. You're going to have to spend a little more money if you want a new one though, best bet is to get a used one through Asurion and hope it works.

I feel lucky, I dropped mine from shirt pocket level onto pavement, the attached headphones prevented a full force impact. The battery cover popped off, and it was face down when I picked it up. The only damage was a small ding near the lanyard loop. A little work with an emery board to smooth it over and you can't see it unless you really look for it.

I've got the same ding in the opposite corner from a similar drop onto concrete driveway. Son knocked it out of my hand and down it went. Still works like a champ though.

To the OP,
You might not like the insurance, but you are paying at least $6/mo for it now. That's close to $150 over a two year contract. Either use it or save yourself some cash and drop the coverage.

And, even with that, $150 + $90 deductible is still cheaper than replacing the $569 phone at retail. Not sure you could even get a good used one for that and guarantee that it work. Even if you found a phone on eBay, you run the risk of it not working and then you have nothing. Asurion provides a warranty with their phones, so if it doesn't work, they send you another. And, if you break it again, with Asurion, you can replace your phone twice in a 12 month period (subject to another $90 deductible, but still...)

I know a lot of people are anti-insurance, and to each his own, but knowing my luck, it's always a good bet to have it even if I never use it. :)

I had a Dinc until a few weeks ago... it just quit working and was "unavailable" to get a replacement... so after the fight Verizon put me in the DX. The one that I got a was a recondidtioned phone that worked ok. About 2 weeks after I got the 1st DX it got dropped into water.. I filed the insurance claim & got a brand new DX that works way better than the first one. The crack in the screen would drive me crazy btw.

I would gladly take back every cent I've ever paid into "required" insurance and pay all my claims (past, present, and future) on my own as long as I never had to pay any insurance ever again.

That was off topic...I know, but insurance really pisses me off.

Maybe, but I lost $15,000 worth of stuff in my home a couple years ago when I was burglarized. All covered at replacement value.

That sure paid for a lot of homeowners insurance.

My girlfriend was sure glad she had insurance a few years ago when she got a double kidney infection and spent days at the hospital, got a battery of tests, and a metric f**k-ton of antibiotics.

That paid for several years worth of medical insurance.

I think there are a lot of crappy things about the insurance industry, but it's not an entirely terrible practice.

My philosophy is I buy insurance for the things where, in a worst-case scenario, I could not afford to pay for out of pocket.

+a billion.

I totaled my motorcycle about 6 weeks ago and I got more from the insurance payout than I would if I had sold the bike myself...which I was hoping to do this winter anyway. They even paid dollar-for-dollar on all aftermarket parts and riding gear; no way I could ever get that back through private sales.

I hated paying the monthly premiums at the time, but it was a lifesaver when the poo hit the fan.

having had to have dental and medical procedures done without having insurance, i will always take insurance. one trip to the emergency room for what turned out to be severe dehydration from food poisoning (thought it was another kidney stone) cost my $1800...i'll gladly pay the $50 deductible next time.

also had to have a tooth replaced with an implant, even with insurance covering 2/3 of the cost I still had to pay over $1000...

i've learned the insurance lesson the hard way...

And I've had a roof blow off in a wind storm, had a bladder infection, and had a couple un-insured motorists hit me...so yes, I've had claims. I'm just saying, for me, I've paid more in then they've had to pay out for me. I'd be better off without it and putting the monthly payments into an interest bearing account. I'm the norm, and accidents are not...that's how insurance makes money (for profit business, right?).

Why am I pissed as of this moment about it??? I pay part of my medical insurance every month in conjunction with my employer. I don't get sick and things very rarely go wrong with me. The crappy insurance we've had to go with to make it affordable to all our employees won't cover the one damned pill that works for me to quit smoking. Stop smoking cessation is not covered under our plan, let alone Chantix. When my doctor calls to get an exception, the tell him "nope, it's not covered". He asks if they cover Chemo, lung transplants, and hospital stays for a patient plagued with lung cancer, they say "yes, we'd cover that". So he confirms "you'll pay the 10s of thousands of dollars to treat cancer, but you won't cover a few hundred bucks for the one medication that will prevent it?" They say "that's right". Bullshit!!! I have not been to a doctor in more than 5 years. Dentist every six months, yes, but a medical doctor no, but I pay for med and dental insurance separate. What ever, I pay for the chantix out of pocket, I've been off the damn things for 36 days and counting, I feel better, and I know I'll save money in the long run. But it's utter bullshit that they won't cover the drug that works.

My boy will be born in March, am I glad my wife has Group Health and everything is covered 100%?...well hell yes I am. But unless something goes wrong, 10 or 12k will be a drop in the bucket after a few years due to the high rate we pay for her group health coverage.

I'm done with my off topic rant, I'm not sure if it'll make any sense, and it'll probably be deleted, but you won't ever convince me that insurance is worth it for the majority of people. Sure things happen, but they happen way less often than they take our checks and cost much less than the amount printed on those checks, otherwise, there would be no insurance companies.

sorry if my last post sounded rude. What I meant to say was, who is telling you they replace your phone with a knock off? What gave you that impression?

I had an old LG vx 8300 and when I got the insurance replacement the phone was the same, but it had no LG brand markings on it or Verizon or anything. Just kind of odd. The phone worked fine, it just looked funny.

Okay... Obviously, on average, a company has to take in more than it pays out to stay in business. But you don't buy insurance because you expect to profit off it. You buy insurance because you simply cannot possibly cope with the alternative.

I used to work for a Chapter 13 bankruptcy trustee. I can't even begin to tell you the people who have a hundred thousand dollars or more of medical debt. These people had their lives crushed because they had no insurance. They are now selling their belongings, having their stuff repossessed, and filing bankruptcy that will destroy their credit for the next 7 years. Paying your premiums into an interest-bearing account is nothing but a gamble.

What happens if, God forbid, your child were born in December instead of in March? That happened to a friend of mine. The NICU ran up over $300k in bills taking care of that baby born 12 weeks early.

Going without health insurance is gambling. Only you're gambling with your home, your lifestyle, your family's happiness.

Sorry, that's just my spiel. My time at the bankruptcy trustee really made me realize how much your life can be changed by something as simple as an untied shoelace or moment of inattention without health insurance.

Boy this thread took a sharp turn. :D

Unfortunately, insurance is a necessity.

To MSXJW,
Yes, I've bet you've paid far more into premiums for various insurances than you've claimed. However, as you age, likelyhood is that your claims will increase. Will they ever exceed the amount of premiums that you've paid? Statistically, no, but your smart enough to know that it's there for catastrophic circumstances.

While some may be dedicated enough to save money and not piss every extra cent on new cars, granite countertops and marble floors, that's not the norm. People tend to spend within (over?) thier means and easy access to credit stalls many from saving. For someone dedicated like yourself who saves 100k for that "rainy day", 1000's of others won't do that and when that fire consumes thier home, they are out of a house (loose all equity), go into bankruptcy (we all pay higher interest for that), become dependant on welfare (government has no money, so say hi to more entitlement taxes), etc.

Reminds me of a recent case where two homes caught on fire. The fire department came out and put the one home out, but watched as the next one burned. Reason? The second home didn't pay the $50 annual fire protection fee (I guess a requirement for rural areas without a local FD). For $50 that house and possesions could have been saved, but because it was optional, the owner decided to take the risk. Something like requiring all residents to have that fee taken out in thier local taxes (eg. force them to pay) would have prevented it.

Forcing people to pay for it is the only way insurance works. If people only took out insurance after cancer, or after thier home was flooded, it would fall apart. Profits are the key point.

But one thing is certain, the federal government hasn't managed a single program that could be profitable, so this new legislation will be a disaster.

Home owner, automotive, and health insurance are something I justify paying for, because YOU can't really control when it'll be used, and when it will be needed it'd often be for multiple small claims or one large one. I couldn't justify phone insurance because, well, it'd be my idiocy or dumb luck that would cause me to need to use it. Paying close to $250 over a 2 year term if I'd ever need to replace the phone just isn't worth it to me when I can just a) buy a close-to-new, older generation phone for less than that, or b) just buy a rather inexpensive phone, cut the data plan, and punish myself for my stupidity of dropping the phone.. dependent on how close I am to my next upgrade and what my current habits are with data use.

If you're accident prone with your phones.. get a heavy duty case. If you're continually dropping the thing, don't be stupid and change the typical habits that cause you to not have a full grip of the thing. Putting the phone on your lap in the car typically carries a high probability of forgetting about it when you step out and watch it fall.
