D1 Upgrade - should I do it?!

so I have an upgrade available atm and I can't decide if I should wait or not. I currently have a Droid 1 rooted/OC'd. My options are either the Fascinate or wait till Jan-Feb. I have zero interest in the X, and can't see "upgrading" to the D2 or the Incredible.

It is probably meaningless to ask the Fascinate community because, like the D1 community, you're probably all biased..but how are you liking your Fascinates? Would you upgrade to it today if you had the choice? What's the highest achievable clock speed to date (stable)? How is audio quality, I've heard of speaker crackling when at max volume?

Thanks for any input!

I love mine, and haven't had any problems with it so far.

My husband upgraded from a D1 to the Fascinate, and he hated it, but mostly because you can't run Cyanogen on it... which is how I ended up with it. The stock TouchWiz/Bing/VZW crapware stuff annoyed me to no end, and if you're used to the fairly stock Android that comes with the D1, it'll be a big change for you. You're also coming from 2.2 on the D1 back to 2.1, though we should have the Froyo upgrade soonish. I rooted and I'm running a pretty good ROM that gets rid of all the crap, so my view is colored by that.

Yeah, my D1 hasn't been stock since the first couple weeks I had it...I'm constantly flashing new roms but generally keep it around 1.1ghz OC'd. If/when I get my Fascinate, I will likely keep it stock for....a couple days.

I guess I just love the screen size of the fascinate...4" really is the "sweet spot."

I have a Droid X and just got the Fascinate as a toy..Im a phone whore and I'm trying to like the Fascinate but the lag is baaad...but hey, I'm rooted and got rid of all the bloat so I like that. I like the way the phone feels and looks. I'm activated and will give it a test run. Going to test the camera tomorrow also. Its a beautiful phone and I hope it can do the trick. I will really test out the GPS this weekend playing golf..If I miss the green by 10 yards it has to be the phones fault..not mine! :D

Please give me your input/review on the Fascinate after this weekend! I know the X is it's primary competition, but I can't get past the huge size of the X...that .3" seems like so much more! Also, I don't see the X as a "different" phone from my D1...since my D1 is OC'd, the X doesn't seem much faster or different...guess I'm looking for something fresh

Will do. The difference in the X and the D1 for me is the camera. I love the 8mp and the HD video. I love how many roms there were to choose from on the D1 though. I hope the Fascinate will have as many when 2.2 finally come out. I will try it out in the next few days and let you know.

I am not biased, I have a D1 and upgraded to the SF. The SF is a superb phone and I love it. I love the stock Touch Whiz. I liked the D1 (which will be on ebay very soon) but it is heavy, thick, has a useless slide out keyboard that I never used but added a lot of weight but otherwise very good. That's like saying "other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play". The SF screen alone is worth admission. I looked at the Dinc and X and the SF was the easy choice for me. No phone is perfect but to paraphrase Alabama, it's close enough.

Don't be fooled by megapixel- bigger is not always better. Lens quality is far more important. That is why the iphone takes far better pics with fewer mp than any phone I have seen. I have not yet compared it with the SF which I will do tomorrow and post the comparison in a new thread.

Not going by megapixels...going by sight. The pics I take look better on the X than my old D1.

No doubt, the D1 camera is simply awful. SF is superipor. My benchmark is my buddy's iphone 4 with 5mp which imo is a cut above the X with 8mp.

Edit: Just compared iphone4 to the SF camera and we both agree that the SF is better in terms or color reproduction- all else is equal. The X needs another look

If you still like the form facter of the Droid than I would wait for the HTC Merge which should be around the corner.

i ordered a SF earlier this week. Coming from a D1. I really like my D1 and not sure if I'll enjoy the touchwiz. I went back into verizon today to play with the DX and SF and now I'm regretting getting the SF. But we shall see in a few days. I hope the SF gets here today and I get a chance to play with it.

And now the HTC leaks are getting me wanting the incredible HD!

yea i'll def be using launcher pro or adw

i didnt getthe SF thru verizon. Since my D1's touch sensor is getting a little wacky after 10 months of having the screen cracked I decided to get something new.

I guess I could sell the SF if I really don't like it...I actually think the screen is too colorful and prefer the DX/D1 screen but maybe cause I'm used to it.

I'll be looking to root and run custom roms of course...i hope GPS isn't bad. I've used it pretty regularly on my D1

and the incredible HD...i can only hope!

theres a lot of development going on for the sf right now (ironically from only a few people). aosp is being worked on and the (eventual) arrival of 2.2 *should* allow cm6 and other roms to be ported.

kernel work is very strong and the sky is the limit as to what is coming down the pipe imo

I came from a rooted &oc'd D1 and I love my sf. II kings covered the high points, so I'll just quote him. The only downside is no status lights, but that didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Oh, and waiting for the g-d gps fix. Screen size is perfect, You can read web pages from a reasonable distance from your face, and finger tracking feels so much better, especially with swype. I actually like touchwiz, and only plan to root to install google search (and gcal if I can).

Oh, and Angry Birds is the bomb on a sf. ;-)

gps may or may not be fixed by 2.2 (personally i doubt it  based on what you read from other sgs phones, but it may IMPROVE)

some love it/some don't...but most of the newer kernels have backlight notifications built in that use the soft keys to act as led notifications....the only main issue is that if they are on during a phone call some experience hearing a buzzing noise. personally i clear them before a call and have no issues, and i cant live without them now :D

I love my Fascinate! I had a Droid X that I returned during my 30 days and before getting the Fascinate, I spent hours in stores testing out the Dinc and the D2. For my needs and my preferences, they just didn't compare.

But that being said, if I was just coming due for my upgrade now, I'd probably delay gratification and wait to see what was being released in Jan/Feb. It is only a couple of months away. And by then, if the Fascinate is still what you want, it will probably be offered at an extreme discount since it won't be the new kid on the block anymore.

many people got the fascinate bogo or for free phone fridays. i believe it ll be one of best buys black friday $1 phones on contract.

there will always be something better coming down the pipe but consider development cycles as well if you are into hacking/roms

unless its a sister phone ie fascinate to sgs phones desire z to g2 and its a new phone line then root/roms/kernels/themes/mods take some time to come out. so if you wait til say january for a phone if ur ready now, it ll really be march before you are happy with it (probably) whereas if a phone out now that is near the top of the line with stuff coming out you dont have to wait (as long) and you can be enjoying it the whole time.

just my .02 :)

I'm sorry, but that statement is incredibly incorrect. The SF doesn't come close to the iPhone 4's camera. It's more on the lines of competing with the Incredible's camera. I hope you're looking at the images on the computer and not from the phone screen. The SF camera's color reproduction is far too washed out, but the sAMOLED screen makes the colors pop. The iPhone 4 has the best phone camera out there and thus, no tech journalist argues against that. The X's camera is superb is color reproduction and is far more accurate than the SF. I've had both and have taken exact pictures with both and the SF can't compete with the X... especially in exposure control.

very good points. however apple is evil and wants to destroy the world and motorola wants to destroy the android hacking community.

samsung neither has the real inclination or the ability to do much in the way of that so ill support them and their half-assed attempts at android as long as they put out decent hardware :D

Ok..I used the Fascinate for a golf gps and this is how it went.

I had a 100% charge at 11:00 am and went to hit balls before my 12:00 pm tee-time.

Started Golfshot golf gps at 12:00 pm

By the end of the round my phone was at 79% battery life..I was very impressed!

It took a while to lock in on the gps at the beginning but once it did it was fine.

A few hints. With Golfshots..if you hit the back button it will cut the gps off and save battery. When you are ready for a yardage..hit "Play Golf" and your round will resume. I use no lock app so it doesn't take quite as long.
