Root Sense ROMs and MMS

Hey guys,

I have been trying out some different ROMs trying to pick out a daily and I have ran into a very annoying problem. When I download a sense ROM I cannot send MMS through Handcent or ChompSMS. However, the stock messaging app works like a charm when sending them. The only problem is that I hate the stock messaging app.

I always wipe and don't flash any other zips before I try sending the MMS and it still doesn't work. The weird thing is that I can use Handcent and ChompSMS on the CM6 ROM.

I've tried the APN method and factory data resets. Nothing.

Here's the sense ROMs I have tried with no luck:
-Myn's RLS2 and 3
-Nil's business sense
-Virtuous v3.1.0
-SkyRaider 3.3

Today I actually unrooted my phone and got everything stock again, and Handcent and Chomp still didn't work.

This is very annoying because I have flashed probably 30 times in the past 3 days trying to find a Sense ROM I can get to work.

Any suggestions???

That's kind of strange.. even when you went back to the stock ROM they won't send? I'm rooted using Virtuous 3.1.0 and MMS messages work just fine in handcent. Are you restoring your apps and settings with titanium when you flash a new ROM? If so, I would make sure not to restore any system data. Just an idea.

Yea, I don't restore anything.. I don't even use titanium.

That's kind of strange. Have you checked your settings in handcent and chomp to make sure something isn't off? You might want to try emailing the developer and see if they can give you an explanation.

Since the MMS can be sent through Chomp and Handcent on my CM6 backup, I actually backed up those versions of the apps via astro file manager and restored them on a Sense ROM and they still didn't work. I even checked to make sure the settings were the exact same. Nothing.

It has to be something with my phone. Could the radio have any impact on something like this?? I even flashed the latest radio and it still seems to change nothing...

When you say that you can not send a message through handcent or chomp, how do you know that your messages aren't sending? Does it popup right away saying that it failed or do users you send it to just never receive the message?

I don't receive any error whatsoever, the other person just never receives it.

I did a little bit of investigating today and wiped and flashed Myn's RSL3. I sent a picture to my email via the stock messaging app and it was attached as a png file. Then when I tried sending the same picture to my email via ChompSMS, the attachment was an unkown file. I uninstalled Chomp and installed Handcent and tried the same procedure. Handcent sent the image as a png file, so I tried sending it to my friend. He still never received it.

Something to note is that through the stock messaging app, the file was only 30 KB. Through Chomp it was 115 KB, and Handcent it was 56 KB.

interesting.. so just to clarify when you emailed the pictures to yourself, you typed your email address into the send box in the messaging application in order to send them to your email? Using this method would send the file to verizon's txt servers, which would then forward it to your email address. This is interesting because it means your phone (and applications) are sending the pictures to the verizon txt servers. For some reason, these messages are then being forwarded on to the recipients cell phone if there encoded using the stock messaging app, but they aren't if they were sent using handcent or chomp. From the sounds of it then, the problem might be on verizon's part. Although I'm not really sure why this problem would only exist for your phone (and probably a few others).

Yes, I just typed my email address into the send box of the messaging application.. But this still wouldn't answer why my phone can send MMS through Handcent and Chomp while running the CM6 ROM....
