I have a vibrant and I was looking at roms and they seem awesome so I may flash rom, but I need to know a few things:

  1. Do I need to root my phone first?
  2. How do I go about flashing a rom?
  3. is there a way I can store roms on my phone then just like pick one?
  4. is there a way I can get back to stock whenever I want?
  5. Do roms auto update or notify you of an update?
Anything I forgot feel free to add :).

1. Yes
2. After rooting, you download a program called Rom Manager,
Also , you load the ROM file as a .zip in your internal SD card.
3. You have to download a certain rom that you want first.
This question is vague.
4. Yes, however, you must save your current ROM before flashing
the aftermarket ROM.
5. Some do, some don't. You can always just check up on the threads.

That is not true.

1. If you wanna flash with rommanager than yes you need to root your phone. If you wanna flash with odin, then no you don't need to root your phone.
2. See answer 1.
3. Yes, but again you have to have your phone rooted and rommanager in order to do that, then you can save all the roms you want to your external SD card, but the rom you want to flash using rommanager has to be on your internal sd card.
4. Yes, just download the Stock JFD rom for odin. And no, you don't have to save your current rom.
5. Custom roms don't. However, if you go on XDA's site {which I'm assuming you do if you know about all these cool roms (i.e. Bionix & Eugene's), they always post updates and fixes so it's fairly easy to keep track of what's going on}
