Folks,

I got my Desire HD last week and over the weekend I got the message to say that there was an update for it, (1.32.405.3), I've downloaded the update, but then when it says "Tap to install the system update" the phone then says "Shutting down" and then turns itself off. As I thought that this was part of the installation process for the update, I left it off for a few hours, but when I turn the phone back on again, the same message pops back up again saying the system update is ready to install, "Tap to install the system update" ... and this just keeps happening over and over... am I doing something wrong ?
I haven't rooted my phone or anything, as this is my first Android phone and I haven't gotten into that sort of stuff yet. Can someone point in the right direction as to what I need to do to install the update correctly ??
Is the phone supposed to shut down ??

I downloaded the update there now. After agreeing to download now, my DHD turns off and starts up again straight away, with a screen with a progress bar showing the update is being installed. When it completed, the progress bar disappeared and the screen stayed for approx 2 minutes. then it restarted and went on to another progress bar. Then restarted again (this time only after about 10 sconds) .. phone started up on the new version np (Congradulations screen appeared).

Download to fully installed and back up took no more than 10 minutes.

I suggest you try download it again and see .. maybe there was a fault in file transfer to your DHD.

I had the same experience. If you have any "Autorun Killer" installed (or similar app.), uninstall it. It helped me and new update 1.32.405.3 I could install. Let your phone to install that update and after restart it should continue whit installing process. Your phone will work few minutes. You can drink your coffee at the moment. Then it should be ok and your phone will congratulate you. I hope :)

You're not charged for the update "program", the message that coems up is just a warning that the download coul dbe quite big, and if you're not on an unlimited data package, or are close to exceeding your monthly data allowance, you may endup having to pay (your network operator) for the data usage. Essentially, better to download on WiFi than mobile data.

I did mind a few days ago as well; don't really know what the changes are, maybe its update to YoutUbe, I seem to recall reading that somewhere, but again, the could be the 405.3 update, not 405.6.

From HTC's website:

Update – HTC Desire HD Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
You can now download the latest software update for new features and improved performance. It won’t delete any of your content and we’d recommend using a Wi-Fi connection as this is a large update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. Any questions? Contact us via www.htc.com. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number). The new Software number will be 1.32.405.6.

Update Information: Improve screen control and Youtube client performance enhancements

Note: We still recommend you back up your all personal data first.

I have the same problem as the original poster. The update downloads fine. Phone should then start the actual update process by RESTARTING. The problem is that doesn't do that, it just shuts down instead.
I realized that the problem probably isn't the update but the phone itself. If I press the power button for a couple of seconds i get the dialog asking if I want to shut down or restart the phone, if I choose restart the phone behaves in the same manor as in the update scenario above, it shuts down without going up again. I then have to press the power button as normally to start it up.

Going to have to mail HTC support I guess.

Did anyone find a sollution to this or talked to HTC about it? I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts. Did a hard reset and tried it without luck. It does indeed seem to be a problem with the phone not being able to restart. It doesn't restart properly when just trying to do that after pressing and holding the powerbutton.

I'm totally serious, plug it into your laptop /computer, then download / apply update, it will reboot into an updater, install .. apparently "freeze" for 2 mins, then reboot, quicker status bar. then reboot a third time and give you a Welcome to the update message.

I swear to god just having it plugged into my laptop fixed it. didnt work on power or plugged into the wall charger

Thanks for your quick reply.

I've tried to apply the update when having it connected to the laptop (just now tried again) but it just won't come back on when applying it. Don't get what could be wrong. got a message from a friend that said that it is possible to apply the update from a computer as well but I can't find any information about that.

Sollution
After spending some time on the phone with HTC support here in Sweden (who claimd to never have heard of it before) I was trying everything I could to try and get it to work. I found out that if I press one of the volume buttons (I used up volume) several times while the phone is restarting, it will start back up.

After having found this out I was able to install the update while pressing the up volume button when it was restarting the first time during the update. After installing the update everything works fine, including the restart function. I was also able to install the second update without problems.

If it's brand new it will NOT be rooted. This is something you have to do yourself.

And go to SETTINGS-ABOUT PHONE-System Software Updates to check for updates. It's the top option.

If you connect the phone by usb to a computer the system update is much faster and won't shut down for as long
