How good can this phone become?

Hey guys! So I've been reading this forum for a while and I'm really considering the captivate. I've read a lot of great things about it, but I've also read about a few bad things (such as lag, gps, ect.). So my question is, if I am completely willing to get my hands dirty and root it, install a lag fix, and all that other good stuff, will this phone essentially be amazing? Like are there any problems I couldn't fix with a hack or two?

The thing about the Android OS is that it is designed to work with a plethora of applications. So while you can install OneClickLagFix, you also need to install additional applications to work in conjunction (Titanium Backup, Superuser Permission, etc).

Don't get me wrong: rooting the Captivate is neat (both in terms of result and as a process). But don't get it wrong: it's not as simple as one app.

The Captivate is really a good phone, but ATT/Samsung delays in Froyo (and likely Gingerbread) updates is sooo ridiculous I almost want to dissuade you from buying it. I recommend you wait another 5 days (11/16/10). If Froyo isn't out yet, then purchase another Android phone.

The phone is built to perform though, that's for damn sure. Awesome screen resolution, tons of processes at once, great speaker for songs (5.1 output to surround sound system), 16gb internal storage, expandable to 32 (with 16gb SD/SDHC). Best of luck.

It's so funny that everyone complains about lag and such. What's a second or two in the overall scheme of things? If you came from WinMo 6.1 as I do, this phone is awesome in terms of speed and function.

I don't really think rooting is even necessary. Any problem you may have, there's probably an app out there to address it.

I'd recommend the phone, Froyo or no.

Just do make sure your GPS works on your phone. So take it for a drive as soon as you can. I was one of the lucky ones, and GPS was flawless on mine from Day 1.

There is an app you can download from the market that will root your phone in under 60 seconds. Download "One Click Lag Fix", open it and the choose "Root this phone", reboot in recovery mode, choose "Reinstall Packages" and Voila, you are rooted! Not to mention, installing the One Click Lag Fix.

Already outlined in the Captivate FAQ:

Not to mention, installing the One Click Lag Fix.

Not advised.

This phone is DA BEST and have converted mine into a time machine so I can go back in time and tell myself to not buy it, for own personal reasons, but everytime I try to go back to a specific point my phone lags and I get jumped to a random timeline. OH the fright involved with being dropped into a field in the middle of a mastadon stampede. Geeez. Anyways, I think I'm back in my actual time line reality and have pretty much acqueisced into keeping my phone due to the lack of a competent time jump and will now be on the project on converting my phone into an alternate dimensional porter so I can be transported to a world where ATT doesn't suck and Samsung has spectacular customer and device support and I'm a billionare playboy, STD free, with the world as my playtoy. But with the lag present with my time jumps I'm a bit hesitant.

Seriously though, the phone is good pending certain applications and mods and altercations and updates and retweaking and rebuilding.

I kid, the phone is good and has it's own vices (As all smartphones do.) and will be enjoyed so long as you can look past a few key issues, but I've only had it for about two months so far sooo take what I say for what it's worth which may be complete S***. ;)
