Root ROM Manager Backup

After rooting my Incredible last night using unRevoked, I downloaded ROM Manager to be able to flash ROM's, MOD's, etc. I flashed the Clockwork Mod recovery option using ROM Manager.

I wanted to able to backup my current ROM using ROM Manager. I clicked on the option within the application, named my backup, and the phone appeared to reboot. However, it got stuck on the black screen with the white lines on each side.

I thought that using ROM Manager and enabling Clockwork Mod would prevent this from happening?

I had to pull the battery, boot in HBoot, and reboot the phone in order to get it to operate again. What did I do wrong?

Did you try booting into recovery? Test that first.

that's weird, as far as I know you did everything right.

First question, does the name you gave the backup have spaces in it? CW does not like spaces or some special chars.

Second, already asked but have you tried to boot into recovery. Try it by powering off then holding Vol Down and Power together for a couple of seconds then selecting recovery with vol up/down then tap power to select.

If recovery is OK then it could be the name you give the backup in RM.

If not, install recovery with RM.

I figured out that I missed a step in the process because I have the SLCD screen. I forgot to flash the file that fixes that.

Hey! Glad you found an answer! Can ya be a little more specific? Like what file? Where did you see a link to a post describing what it does and where to get it? I just returned an SLCD phone to VZ because of this and I've seen several posts with people griping at unfortunates who ruin their phones that "they should have researched" and "they should not have...this or that" or "EVERYONE knows that you..." well, I've looked, I've hosed one phone and it is on the way back to verizon, and I've looked again. I must be searching wrong, because I just can't find the info. I ended up hosing my last one after rooting and doing a nandroid restore of a ROM I had on my 2nd AMOLED phone before it went swimming with the bull sharks in Tampa Bay. Got the black screeen deal-i-o... and was never able to get it to come back to life.

Help a brother out here!

Sadly, I hadn't read your message before doing my first rom manager backup. I did use spaces, and now the Desire won't get past the htc screen. I can get to recovery however. What should I do once I'm there to get back the normal screen? reboot system now? wipe data/factory reset? backup and restore? advanced?

I have the slcd screen Inc and I was having the same issues. If I remember correctly I had to download an alternative recovery image and rename it before I put it on the root of the sd card. It's been awhile since I've done that but I'm pretty sure that's what I had to do. Found the solution on the these threads somewhere.

When flashing custom ROMs, I also have to flash a known good kernal before the ROM will boot up. Right now I'm running MIUI and everytime I update I have to flash Koush's test kernal before I can boot up. You flash the kernal right after you flash the ROM before you try to boot. Had to do this when I tried CM6 as well.

How would I know if I have an SCLD screen? Could you explain your answer more simply -- I'm a total newbie... When I get to recovery, which option should I choose to be able to do anything else? Should I reboot the system? wipe the data and do a factory reset? backup and restore?

Joe, did you get your phone in a box? If so this site shows you exactly how. If not, I had to use a magnifying glass to determine it as demonstrated by a couple of pictures I found earlier on web page but which I can't seem to find now. Sorry...
