Hey android forums! Just a boring college kid here. I have been lurking the last few days and last night I ordered my captivate.
Anyways I plan on developing for android as I'm learning java in class now.
Whatever unrelated.
First off.
What should i do when i first get my captivate?
I have a few email accounts I check often, what is the best way to make sure this doesn't kill my battery?
I also want to get rid of or block the at&t bloatware.
and I was wondering some good apps to get.
and one more thing. If i install launcher pro does it deactivate touchwiz? like will touchwiz still run in the background and drain power?
I really just want the best experience and good battery life :):):)
You may see me in the up coming months on the market place I have some good ideas. PM me with any other app ideas

i have 5 email accounts, on 2 of them i have push accounts so as soon as the email is sent i get it. on 1 of the others i have it check every hour, and on the final 2 i check every 24 hours as theres nothing real important of those. and my battery life is great, especially with the cognition 2.1 rom i was at 26 hours of use and still had 60% of my battery

to get rid of the bloatware you either need to root and uninstall with titanium backup or if you use launcher pro there is an option to hide them so they are still installed but you cant see them

and touchwiz is technically always running, as there are elements of it even with launcher pro as your default launcher, but it doesnt hurt the battery anymore.

i may also recommend the 2 batteries + wallcharger off of amazon. its like $30 and since i got mine i havent plugged my phone in, when a battery gets low i just interchange them, but its not necessary

Another thing how do apps update? do you open marketplace?

There's actually a notification for app updates, or you can use AppBrain and it will sync and indicate updates. Also the newer App Market (which may be due to me running 2.2) has a bulk update and a setting for +automatic+ updates, which make managing a large number of apps (and their related updates) much easier.

App Brain also allows you to "push" app installs OTA down to your phone from your PC (via the website). I love that feature - sometimes during the day I'll read about a new app, click over to the website, and install it, regardless of where my phone is sitting.

Android has quite a few "desktopless" features that I really like.

Read the Captivate FAQ:

Only poll as little as possible. Or use IMAP IDLE (push). If your email provider doesn't support IMAP, switch to a better one that does.
