Root Anyone Tired Z4Root

A buddy of mine is looking to root his SF I was on the Incredible Forum eariler and saw someone asking about Z4Root. I was wondering if anyone has tried it with an SF or not?

i have read about it...but id assume most people in the root section here were already rooted with the method posted from androidcentral forums. it looks like it supports sgs phones, but many things that support the gsm sgs phones flat out dont work for us, the epic, or the mesmorize.

that being said, its really really easy to root this phone on the computer...just takes 15 mins or so to d/l all the files and get set up...then a few minutes to read through the instructions.

im very anti phone only hacks. (like this or universal androot) personally i think if you are going to undertake something like hacking your phone its not too much to ask to read through the great how-to's posted by developers and learn whats really going on with the hack you are applying. :D

i dont mean this as an insult or anything to anyone who doesnt share the pov, but too many people screw up their phones without the safety net of adb/sdk installed on their computers with the proper drivers. really if you dont have the drivers installed on your comp and you bork your phone you could be in for a world of hurt, whereas if you have them...you are generally good to go :)

stepping down from my soapbox now.............

I've tried it on my Fascinate but can't get it to work. A few people on an AndroidCentral forum have reported SF success. I'm still hopeful. I don't want to do a full-root until after Froyo rolls out. I'm still pretty new to Android.

why wait for 2.2 to root??? really ive never taken an ota with an android phone....one of the devs will strip down the ota and drop it into a flashable file within hours of it first going out....most of the time you can keep root this way without re-rooting.

worst case you have to reroot, but you have an optimized 2.2 that ll be stripped of crapware already for you :D

I'm still super-new to Android (~1 month). I'm easing my way into this :) I'm still learning all I can about the mod/hack methods before I make any big changes.

Update on the z4root: I just got it to work on my Fascinate. I disabled (not just killed) Lookout App virus scanner, and used a task manager to kill all running apps, then immediately ran z4root. The process completed successfully in about a minute. Thanks to the author of post #38 on an XDA forum (I'd post a link, but I don't know the etiquette of linking to another forum from this one).

linking to xda etc is usually ok as long as something isnt listed as "exclusive" to a site and you're not linking directly to the d/l (or to market apps)

glad it worked for you...but :sigh: on phone root apps are..............:(

i wish i had the power/ability to block all conversations regarding 1 click root apps...they are my #1 hot button topic when it comes to android.

that was one of the things i liked about this phone....COMPUTER FOR ROOT

LOL!

I've always done it the hard way... there's never a one-click option until I've already rooted my phone.
Yeah honestly when I reset to stock a few days ago it was faster me for to just re-root since I had all the files and drivers on my PC already I than it would be have been for me to go to Market and DL a one click app which may or may not actually work

There is nothing wrong with doing a one click root bro, I know its not your cup of tea but if someone blows up a $600 phone they are out not you. I do agree with you that a one click root will bring people in to the rom world that don't know what they're doing.

if you know what you are doing already, then fine.

however, every time a 1 click root thread or whatever pops up it induces those who were on the fence a lot to take the jump and root and they are completely unprepared for it.

however, since you ll eventually need the sf drivers installed on your computer for recovery and the rest the z4root accomplishes nothing in terms of time savings that following the root/recovery threads doesnt.

however since its feasible that someone does 1 click root grabs tibu or root explorer and starts deleting stuff and bricks. now they have no drivers installed, cant install clockwork have no backups etc.

im not saying this is you, im just saying the fact that these things exist and people say "hey it worked! :)" only perpetuates their use and temptation to the uniformed.

the android community would be an infinitely better place if none of these things existed, and I'm sorry if others don't share this pov with me but I will continue to scream into the wind regarding this until the day motorola/htc/other oems finally figure out a way to stop hacking (and i believe that they will at some point)
