Question for the Rooting noob.....If I root via (Unrevoked Method above), will my phone be wiped? In short, I want root...but I DO NOT want to Re-Do anything Setting wise on my phone. I don't want to re-download apps, I don't want a different homescreen....I don't want any of it....

All I want is Root access added to my phone without changing anything else.

UnRevoked does not alter those things.

Rooting your phone doesn't wipe your phone or change any of your settings. It just gives you superuser access. Now, if you flash a ROM you need to wipe your phone. But that's why you use an app like Titanium Backup which you can use to backup all of your apps and then re-install them after the wipe.

When I rooted my Incredible It seemed that the video wasn't quite up to date when compared to the latest version of Unrevoked. Any plans for a new video? I ended up just following the text instructions further down the page which seemed to be closer to how the latest version of Unrevoked works.

Did you install the drivers(when in hboot and when booted) and is usb debugging turned on?

Just rooted using Unrevoked. Backedup using included clockworkmod. Now where do I go from here with my rooted phone? Initially my intentions of rooting was because I wanted to remove a lot of the bloatware pre-installed. I don't know how to do that. Read some things dated years ago that you need certain apps to do this. Is their a current...and simple method to go about doing this?

Along the same lines, will running the cyanogenmod get rid of those unwanted bloatware apps? My guess would be yes, since it's pretty much a new OS...but I need to confirm that. Also being new to rooting and cyanogenmod, If I'm not mistaken, this basically takes away it's android status correct? It no longer uses android OS...?

Wanted to overclock my phone too. Looking to get the best performance out of my phone. What it was intended to do. How to?

Just some noob questions.

The power button on my HTC Incredible is broken. I was going to try rooting and remapping the power button to the volume button instead but apparently I can't root using Unrevoked since I can't use the power button to HBoot.

Admittedly I am a total noob at this, have never rooted a phone and am at a loss as to what to do. The phone was purchased on ebay so warranty work is probably out (plus I opened up the phone on the off chance it was something easy like a spring) so the warranty is probably out because of that too.

The phone's android version is 2.3.4. and my computer is running XP.

One idea I had around the bad power switch is to solder a wire on each side of the bad switch and hold them together to close the circuit while trying to root w/unrevoked for the HBoot portion. This would be my last resort since soldering to the circuit board would probably result in me f'ing the phone up.

Is there a non-rooted way to remap my power button? Or can I replace the switch? (if it's a simple solder job I might be able to handle it but if there are a lot of crazy connections I'd be in trouble).

I'm not too interested in messing around with the phone's OS other than remapping the buttons although it would be nice to get rid of the bloatware.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated since the phone functions just fine other than the bad power button. I can receive calls no problem. To make calls I have to plug it in or remove/reinstall the battery. Either will bring up the screen and allow me to interact with the phone.

Thanks.

You don't need the power button to root, but you do need the power button to get s-off.
You can follow the root directions stickied for 2.3.4 just stop when you get to the s-off section.
