There is an update in the works right now, but it will be an MR and not 2.2. It will fix a few issues though and I'm told that the signal meter will be one of them.:D

Apparently VZW wants to fix things before they start rolling out Froyo.

I'll post a full list of fixes once I have it.

Not necessarily. This is my first android phone, I didn't even pick it, it was bought for me... After receiving it, I went into research mode to make it as god as I could for me. That said, I am awaiting updates a much as the next person, but had no clue that verizon our samsung were slow on the updates circuit... Also, I have not rooted yet because each time I am tempted, I go do a little more research, and so far have not got a reason strong enough to void warranty...which may change when a froyo rom comes out before the ota, which seems inevitable now...
you knew what you were getting yourselves into when going with a Samsung phone.. :p

Thats nice but Im not getting my Froyo from Verizon anyway so ;)

I have mixed feelings about that, but I'm leaning toward just waiting for a 2.2 ROM.

The merit in returning the device to stock, which is so simple as to be almost a "toggle" from root, seems to have less and less weight these days.

I'll end up rooting after the update anyway, so why not just remain rooted and have ROM hopping fun. :)

Yup, I had a mild voodoo uninstall problem a few days ago so I odin'd myself back to stock and honestly in about 30 minutes I was able to restore everything minus a few apps. But root, CWM, ROM and kernel all went on in like 10 minutes time. Thats what makes something like jt's clean rom so lovely, it debings and debloats for me

Well, 2.2 will be de-binged anyway.. ;) .. sometimes the Big Companies do listen, it appears.

But, yeah, rooting just seems like a common sense move now, as opposed to the "hack" sort of feeling it had about it when I first started last Spring with my Eris.

Won't be de-binged, but will give you the option to install Google Search from the market and change to it as the default.
