Since Sunday morning i have been (unable to download or update any apps) on my Desire. I have tried most things; like turning the phone off, taking the battery out, going into (manage applications) Market and clearing the cache. Some people have suggested uninstalling google maps which i have, but all to no avail. Internal phone storage i have 51.92MB of available space, so i cannot seeing being a problem there. Just to let you know i am on the Orange network PAYG if that helps which it probably does not.

I have about 10 apps that need updating now, and this whole experience is getting me down as i really love this phone. I spent

I was having the same problem. I went through lots of different ideas posted on various forums and blogs last night, but sorted it by following the advice on this one:
TechCredo.com | How to fix download & installation unsuccessful Android Market issues

You'll need to either move apps from the SD card to the phone (or uninstall some of them if you don't have enough space). I did a mixture, moving apps that had a lot of user data etc associated with them and deleting those that would be easy to reinstall.

I then deleted the .android_secure folder from the root of my sd card and then reinstalled or moved the original apps back.

Everything seems to be working OK now.

I have had a look at the link you provided. My phone is still 2.1 and so no apps have been saved to my SD card. Regarding space, as i stated in my OP i have 53.45MB of internal phone storage.

If this is your problem, when it happen to me I noted that somehow the date and time had reset to default of 1 jan 1980 12:00.

Market Place does not like this as when I corrected the date and time Market Place loaded correctly and I could download and install.

With taking battery out you could have mucked up the date and time and not noticed.

No time and date were correct when inserting battery back into my Desire.

Been a lot of instability in the market lately. Just take a look at the Google forums

Mine went down for around 3 days a couple of weeks back. Nothing seemed to sort it. Battery out, caches/data cleared etc. The only thing I didn't try was a factory reset.

After 3 days it just suddenly started working again. Woke up one morning and the apps had downloaded and updated.

Could it be a network issue? I assume you have credit on your card and that you haven't exceeded any data limits? Is it just the market that is inaccessible or do you have a total lack of data? Tried the sim in another device? Maybe just check with Orange that they are not blocking your access for some reason.

Yes I have ample credit on my sim plus I as I'm with Orange I usually purchase the

I have had the exact same problem. I searched forums for the answer. Did all the usual clear data and clear cache recommendations but nothing worked.

I noticed I was getting a low memory message even though there seemed to be plenty of memory available. In a forum somewhere, someone said try emptying your email trash folder. I did this and the problem was solved instantly.

I had the same problem. Factory Reset solved it for me, but the issue is when the internal memory is almost full (<15 mbs). This causes a failed negotiation with GTalk (uses this protocol to communicate for other apps).

Freeing up internal storage space should also work, but I didn`t have 100% success until i did a reset.
