Whats the latest with the "Bump Charge" issue?

BTW mods, im not looking for support, just to discuss the issue and see if i can be brought to speed

Today i unplugged with my 3500 in the phone, checked emails for about 22 seconds and it dropped to 92% :eek:

turned phone off and plugged back in until green, and streamed Pandora while checking emails for about 15min before it even moved off of 100%

Just wondering, whats the latest word on this issue? Is it hardware? software? any hopes for a fix?

I havent been online to follow the forums much at all, wondering what i missed
 
i still dont bump and hardly charge with the phone off. i experience a small loss but i can still be at over 90% after 2-3 hours at home so i am not worried.

wild..after 2-3 hours of texting and stuff, i'll be down to like 65% if i don't bump charge. if i do, i'll be down to 90%. ridiculous.

the other night i woke up at like 8am or so, saw the phone was green so i unplugged. fell back asleep. when i woke up, i checked, 85% from just idling for 3.5 hours. absolutely ridiculous

The overall concept is tha the phone will hold more of a charge, for longer, if charge when phone is off

That's Off-Charge. Bump Charge is the one where you unplug and replug the phone (while still on ) "Bumping" the charge up each time.

The initial drop seems to have 2 possible factors causing it.

First, some people have been reporting that when the phone reaches 100%, it stops charging but does not use the connected power to run the phone: Instead draining the power of the battery until a cut-off around 90-95% is reached where the battery is again charged. This can explain some of the variance in reported drops after charging.

Second, due to the method of charging, and reading the current power in Li-Ion batteries..any power being drained to operate the item equates to a decrease from the top charge possible...this even happens when the power cord is powering the device...as it "thinks" the battery has stopped accepting more charge, when it's actually that some of it is going to powering the device. This happens with all Li-Ion devices, but is generally not noticed. Even on the INC this one issue is likely difficult to measure/judge due to the variability in the first and last 10 percent of a charge.

I think a big part of it is that when phone is on and plugged in(into computer at least, haven't tested in wall) that your phone will not 'go to sleep' at all. screen may be off but device shows exact same up time and awake time. I've checked and re-checked and it is NOT because of any app. Only happens when i have it plugged into computer. I think if it were able to 'go to sleep' when on and plugged in that a bump charge wouldn't be needed.

My version of a bump charge is take it off the charger, check emails, twitter, facebook, etc. This drops the battery to 92%. Then plug it back in when I get in the shower and by the time I get out its at 100% and it takes about 3 hours to drop back to 90%. I have not once turned it off to "bump" charge it and it seems to be doing the job.

So the phone is plugged in, but no longer charging because the phone understands that it no longer needs a charge. However, now the phone is losing battery power due to idling. It will not start charging again, until you unplug the phone and plug it back in. Then it will go back to 100% and it starts all over. But, its not idling for hours due to you being asleep.

I unpluged it as soon as it turned green (therefore not have enough time to idle) to test out this theory. It still goes down to 90% within 15 mins. There has to be something else.

This is the best explenation i have ever read, makes perfect sense.

So if there were ever a hope for a fix to this, it seems like a software update would do it?

UPDATE:

I got the Nov OTA update today... it's a bit different. The battery lasted for about 45 mins with occational usage before getting to 92%. I saw the 3G Icon lit and still can't figure out what was using data.

My point sort of still stands. The battery drains much quicker to about 85% then discharges normally. My phone has been sitting at 85% for about an hour with two texts when it drained to 85% in 2 hours with minimun usage.

most of the time i charge with my phone off so i dont have to bump charge and it lasts a while.

I have however noticed that when i charge my phone while its on, it drops rapidly after unplugging. I noticed if i unplug the phone right when the green light turns on it lasts just like if charging when it was off. but if i let it charge continuously (like while sleeping) it drops to 92 really fast.

I read a thread earlier that was saying once the phone is fully charged it stops accepting current to charge. the phone then uses battery power to run the phone in standby until you pull the phone off the charger.

Im assuming this is a software problem that will never be fixed. Im thinking its some sort of safety issue. or just a major glitch.

I unplug at quarter to 7 every day and I was still at 100% at 9:30 today. seemed to drop a little faster after it got down past 50% but I was on the phone a lot today so that could be it. (this was with bump charging)

I'm really happy with battery life after the OTA - charges faster and decharges slower.

I used to use Tasker to tell me when the phone thought the battery was full, and since I used it with bluetooth in the car, it stayed on the car charger. I noticed that it would be about 5 minutes of sitting there until it told me that the battery was full again. I hate the battery/charging situation with this phone, I have to stay connected to a charger in order to use it throughout the day. If this is the way HTC makes their phones, I doubt I will be buying another one.

I have noticed REALLY poor 15% to shut times... once i get to 15% phone is through with quicker than ever. Am doing nothing different. Using aldiko to read when notification first comes up and i used to be able to read close to another hour... now more like 10 or 15 more mins

I have noticed REALLY poor 15% to shut times... once i get to 15% phone is through with quicker than ever.

Sounds like HTC did the smart thing to silence the trail of tears on battery row and just flip-flopped the battery display algorithm.

Make 100%-50% "drain" more slowly, show accurate drain from 50-20, and then show faster than true drain from 20-0.
