Seems as if someone at sholes.info has successfully greated an image for android 2.1 that works on the droid. They mention that some things may not work properly (system permissions) and that they recommend not to do this until they create a fully functional "proper" image. Anyway, good news for us Droid users. :D ROOT required, and risky... but still good news nonetheless.

Android 2.1 ported to Droid, no one feigns surprise -- Engadget

Risky.. but couldnt you simply boot into safe mode or whatever it is.. holding X.. and put an older image on the phone if it messes up?

So whats 2.1 got that makes it better then 2.0.1?

From what I have read so far... seems to have more homescreens. On top of that it has a grid or "cards" that are at the bottom now and you can preview each of your homescreens and choose which one to go to. Lastly, it has animated wallpapers... such as falling leaves on an autumn-style background. Now, that is what I have seen from the "google phone" (nexus-one..whatever it's gonna be called) and it is running 2.1. Now to say that it is android 2.1 or some extra stuff that is exclusive only to the google phone... is beyond me.

I hope we get some cool stuff that's stock on the phone, but its open source so we can get all that eventually. But at Sholes they have an image for 2.1 for droid, but no proof of it running.

All I want out of 2.1 is the five homescreens. I can't waaaaitttt.

That's pretty easy to do with Home++, a free app on the market that allows 3-7 screens, and is much faster than the stock.

What I want from 2.1 is the "Web-OS" card view of all my screens, as well as animated backgrounds. This is a good first step, hopefully within a few days they'll have a more stable version.

Considering this particular 2.1 image is customized for a completely different device, that's not a surprise. It would be like cloning a C: drive from one brand of PC, and trying to get the image to run on another brand...the OS would run, but the drivers would be all screwed up..

Now if someone has the knowledge to make a hybrid of the 2.1 system files, and the current droid files.. that may work.

Droid Gets An Unofficial Android 2.1 Build - Droid 2.1 - Gizmodo

Looks like someone has already ported the Google Phones 2.1 build to the Droid. While I am not adventurous enough - or even have the knowhow - to install this update, it is good to know that it is potentially around the corner.

If anyone is willing to try and update to 2.1, let the rest of us know how it is.

Is that the same (unfinished) version that someone posted earlier? I'm willing to try it if it's a completely working version of 2.1.

I really need to buy a dummy Droid to screw around with.

Can we please do searches before posting the same exact information about the same exact thing? It prevents moderators from having to combine threads that clutter up the forum.

Sorry about that. I used the built in search when creating the thread... I saw nothing on this subject.

Well, I've merged the new thread with the old one. Let's continue the discussion here.
