Android radar detector in the works.

Well, sort of. Radar detector manufacter, Cobra, has decided to port it's application of iRadar over to the Android platform. It will come with a radar detector and connect via Bluetooth to your phone. The application will function like Trapster. I am excited to see something like this.

What do you think?

neat idea, but i'd never trust my phone as a radar detector.

also, my Cobra XRS 9500 has worked well for years and has saved my ass countless times. Maybe some models work better than others, but to say none of the Cobras work is ridiculous.

i dont think the idea would be to make your phone a radar detector. but instead when the detector goes off, it would report where the cop is hiding via GPS through apps like Trapster or Waze. Your phone would supply the internet so that the detector could report when being triggered.

That has nothing to do with the app. You're talking hardware, the OP is talking software.

Oh of course. I wasn't saying anything negative about the app, simply the Cobra hardware itself. Cobra is on the leading edge software wise. The features they implement are awesome. If they made better hardware like valentine one, beltronics, escort, or whistler they would be a top company.

I've had one for about 3 years now and it's saved me more times than I can count. I don't live in a big city so it's perfect for me. If you'd like to learn more check out Radar Detector Jammer Forum there's tons of info over there. I've got the same name over there, drop me a line. Be careful though, radar detectors are just as addicting as flashing roms lol.

This is correct. They are not turning our phones into detectors, just a way to keep track and/or report places where speed traps are. There is a similar app called Radaractive that currently only works with V1 detectors and iPhone. They are working an Android version, as well.

+2 on cobra being extremely subpar. I too am a member of radardetector.net and I have a V1.
cobra is actually copying another android app that works for the V1 called radar active. Radaractive | Speed Trap Information Network

The cobra app is not really like trapster, its just a display for the radar detector, since the detector itself doesnt have a display, see: Cobra iRadar | The Most Advanced Radar Detection System in the World

Im curious what would happen when you get a call, since your phone is the only warning/display you have for the detector.. hmm.

Escort Passport 8500. Tested mine with my friends V1 and they both work just as well except the Escort doesn't show which way the radar is coming from. Not really needed, just need to know when you hear beeping, slow down. My Escort actually picked up a few signals earlier then the V1. There both good though. Have a cobra, used it for about 2 days cause it was a gift, then got the 8500. Been ticket free for a couple months now.

Long time RD user- I've used Cobra before and had very good fortune with it. V1 more recently, and will be installing the Escort 9500ci in my next car, along with jammers, oil slick, smoke screen, and ejector seat. Ok, maybe not the oil slick.

Can't wait until the capabilities in the relationship between rd's and phones are fully dug out- I think it could prove to be some really cool stuff in the future.

Around here Red Light Cameras/Photo equipment and roving unsuspecting vehicles with out of state plates on the side of the road running photo radar are the norm now, so if you don't have a way to keep up with the "red light/photo" database you will be in trouble.
With the roving vehicles they emit a very low grade radar signal that is difficult to pick up (I have a V1 and a 9500ix) until you are too close and the flash has caught your plate on camera.
Cliff notes version: My Inc works great, my radar detectors do the same and will remain separate

To combat red light cameras you might want to look into speed cheetah products.they make some great devices which warn of red light and stationary speed cameras. They use the trinity database which is the best one, and also use directional gps to only warn you about threats in your direction of travel. I have the gps mirror and totally love it. I love this concept, but it would be great if Valentine was the one pushing it forward. What would be really solid is if the signal would them show you where the radar signal was originating from in Google Maps.

Doesnt matter as I live in Va. one state I have to live that bans detectors. I wish I could get a jamming system that was on the bombers I use to crew. We had SP that would try to see how fast the bomber was going and they would jam and blow the radar gun up lol.

Sure, but to find it, they'd have to search your phone, which in most cases is a tiny bit illegal.
