Thoughts on the Samsung Nexus S

We have yet to see the final specs of Samsungs Google experience phone. we have a few known tidbits, but nothing concrete either. it's rumored to have a curved screen, which i think would be weird at first, but i think would ultimately be awesome. but what are your thoughts on the specs? do you think it'll really push the boundaries, like the nexus one did? here are a few things i "THINK" will be included with the nexus s...

1- a faster, more powerful processor. with the market being flooded with 1GHz processors already, they need to set themselves apart from the competition, and this phone would be perfect for the extra push. my guess, at least a 1.2GHz processor, though i know samsung has been working on a dual core processor too...

2- unbreakable sAMOLED screen. they already mentioned having the sAMOLED2 in the phone. i am willing to bet it it either a higher resolution, to match or beat the iphone4 resolution, or it has the unbreakable AMOLED casing that samsung has showcased for up months ago. or both. that would be reason enough to get the phone!

3- and this is reason enough to get this phone.... STOCK ANDROID. we have all rooted our galaxy s phones, and shown what this phone is truly capable of doing without touchwiz. the phone is amazing as it is, and even without the extra power, if our phones were running stock andoid 2.2, it would blow away the rest of the phones... and the nexus s is coming with stock 2.3 installed. also note, it's a google experience phone. samsung is simply supplying the hardware, and google will deal with the updates like with the nexus one.

in all, the nexus s i think will set the next standard for what phones can really do. but in order to do that, they need to push the boundaries once again, like the original nexus one did.

I'm crying inside because Samsung's idea of good design sucks. Part of the N1's appeal is how metallic it is, the build quality. Samsung's tacky plastic is entirely unwelcome.

With regards to the processor: dual-core or nothing. A single-core 1.2 GHz isn't enough of an upgrade--I can overclock my N1 to about that much, after all, and even a better GPU in the Hummingbird isn't sufficient reason to upgrade (seeing as there's nothing that needs amazing GPUs yet).

My N1's color and texture are the only things I don't like about the N1. I would gladly pay full out of pocket for the Nexus S (NS) as long at it fully supports ATT's network bands and it had google-controlled updates to Android vanilla.

My thoughts?

If it doesnt have GPS and lag, stall, freezing issues due to the file system, it will be an amazing phone out the box.

If it still has the issues the Galaxy S line has, only rooting will make this phone better and worth keeping.

You hear how one person choose the Inc over the Fascinate cuz the Fascinate kept freezing...I dont think I would ever choose the Inc over any Galaxy S phone...you hear how ppl are still having GPS issues....

Samsung needs to hang out in the forums....

I swear, a lot of people complaining about the plastic has never even played with the device longer than 5 minutes.

- Yes, the back cover is plastic, but the weight of the phone is awesome.
- The phone doesn't pull down my shorts/pants.
- I don't think "plastic" when I touch my phone.
- I always use a case so who the hell cares if it's plastic or metal.

I doubt the Nexus S will have any of Samsung's proprietary flubs like the secure file system that is causing all the lags. Samsung seemed to be able to have fixed that on their Froyo releases though.

I suspect the Nexus S is the counterpart to the Galaxy S2, much like the Nexus One is to the HTC Desire.

Why Samsung? Because they make the screens, the CPUs and even the NAND. Its not like Apple or HTC that has to source them from outside, e.g. Samsung.

That's probably because a lot of the Nexus One's design appeal is HTC. If you take the HTC Touch of long ago, you can see the design heritage.

The Nexus S seems like a thin sliver of black jelly. I think that's the design effect Samsung wants to achieve.

I'm caught up in the same dilemma as you are. I was a hair line away from making a move on the Galaxy I9000 S (Hong kong version), until another fellow user pointed out that the Nexus S will be released soon and with STOCK OS which will receive regular updates. Not having to deal with the Touch Wiz UI and the pos Kies software that current Galaxy users have to put up with is def a plus. As of rite now I'll go back to speculation mode as I am really interested in this fone, but if it doesnt meet my criteria then I may very well just go for the Galaxy S (hopefully with a drop in price)

1. Form factor: I'm not one of those punk emo kids that wear ball chokin jeans but I do like my jeans fitted, and when I have the phone in my pockets I dont want it to seem like I'm carrying around a brick. The Galaxy S was pretty thin and fitted nicely so I hope the Nexus S can achieve that.

2. Carrier: Hopefully like its predecessor this bad girl will be released for the T-mobile network. I worked for a TM authorized dealer prior to moving to China, and when I move back to the States I plan on using their service again cus they always have better deals than you know who.

3. OS: This purchase will be my first smartphone/pda ever (i know im a cave man =P). So I want to be sure I have the best out there, and one that enjoys regular updates. From what I've been reading it takes Samsung a while to update the Galaxy and not all regions get that update.

4. Price: Hopefully the pricing will be reasonable. The N1 was priced at $529 for just the fone alone, if the Nexus S can achieve this price then I am SOLD!

Supposedly there was an info leak from a Best Buy personnel that the S was to be released on 11/14 but apparently that boat set sail. Now we're left with out a price, with out a release date, and just pictures of the phone sitting on the dudes lap. DAMN YOU GOOGLE!!!

they delayed the release of the nexus s. for what reason we don't know, however they did state it was something to do with the hardware. whether it be a shortage, or maybe upgrading, who knows?! i am a current galaxy s user, i have the vibrant, and am very happy with it. i do see where the vibrant falls short, and the nexus s not only looks to fill those gaps, but they look to improve on it in every way. i am keeping my eye out for this one, as i may have to upgrade early myself!

Ding Ding Ding...We have a winner!!! 100% on point...They make everything, why not use them! I suspect they will rule the device game in 2011...

It'll be a match made in hell if the nexus s carries over any of the hardware faults that are currently in the Galaxy S. Wifi and GPS faults to name but a couple.
I'm hoping the Nexus S will be a fantastic, reliable phone. But with Samsung behind the wheel, i ain't holding my breath.....

Ian

From what I hear Samsung got it right with the Tab. Hardware and software.

And this time if they get it wrong (with GPS and File system etc.) they will have to answer to Google instead of "just some people on obscure forums" ;)
he he

From what I have seen this baby looks sweet... only turn off so far (Hoping Sammy fixed GPS, LAG etc. etc.) is that it doesnt seem to be able to use memory cards

Link to Danish mobile site

"Translation":

Just above "Den har NFC (it has NFC)"
It states that the Battery is 1500 mAh and has built in memory of 16 GB without the possibility for expansion as it has no memorycard slot.

please have gapless playback!!...Im really nit picky about my audio and from what I've heard all the other android dont have it...I have high hopes for this phone so please dont shatter my hopes and deter me to an iPh*@#!!...

Edit: And from the specs on the website so far, it doesnt seem like it has an additional memory slot. If thats the case then I would be extra turned off...

I dont have an iphone but i do have the ipod touch, so basically I want to consolidate my media player and my phone into one device so that I can free up my pockets. I dont want to be limited to 16gb cause honestly, I have media up the wazoooo and 16gb is just infuriating. Dont let me down google!! I held off on getting the Samsung Galaxy for this Nexus S so do us proud and listen to what the consumers have been saying!!...
