From Sunday's NY Daily News:

Alaska gets $1.84 in federal spending for every dollar it pays in federal taxes. We in New York get just 79 cents on the dollar.

Which means we subsidize Alaska even as it enjoys a $2 billion-plus budget surplus.

Even as New York faces a huge deficit that will require ever more painful cuts.
And, on top of a budget surplus, Alaska has a special fund drawn from oil profits that doles out dough to every resident annually.

The check this year is $1,281 for each and every person who has resided in Alaska for a year. Those who die or are born in the midst of a year still get the full check.
The amount is liable to federal taxation, but that same $1.84 back for every dollar comes into play for the state as a whole.

All told, oil-rich Alaska tops the list of states that get more back than what they give.

So, how's that subsidy, welfare-y thing working out for ya, Sarah?

Maybe there will be more reality shows featuring other big names in the Tea Party who call for cuts in government spending even as their home states are subsidized by the rest of us.

There could be Sen. Jim DeMint's South Carolina, which gets $1.35 on the dollar.
There could also be Sen.-elect Rand Paul's Kentucky, which rakes in $1.51.
Compare those states to two that are in financial crisis and suffer an even worse balance of payments than we do in New York.

California receives only 78 cents on the dollar.

And New Jersey gets just 61 cents, though it does have a hit reality show.

Yep. Personally, the federal government should only raise taxes to spend on national items (Defense, FBI, CIA, IRS... etc.). Not one federal dollar should be sent BACK to a state.

That money should remain in that state. The state should collect that money in taxes, and then that state should use that money to pay for what that state needs.

Of course, that would re-establish power between the Federal Government and the State governments to a constitutional level... we can't have that.

I agree with this, although I do think there should be a federal fund for disadvantaged areas (not states), like the EU has (I think ye have this already)
I personally think states should fund healthcare and education themselves, but there should be A LOT of co-ordination etc

Speaking of the EU, a problem we have is almost the oppisite: the only revenue raising methods the EU has is tariffs and fines , and depends on member states for the remaining €~120bn
I would like to see the EU have its own revenue raising methods (maybe corporation tax, excise, not VAT as it makes things more complicated for businesses, maybe income tax)
- then again afaik, most confederations raise money the way the EU does (I think EU is only pseudo one, no real ones anymore, NO Canada is a Federation :p)

RINOs love big government. (True) Conservatives hate it.

BTW, there are such things as conservative Democrats, though they are a bit rarer in modern times. There was one a while back that was pretty awesome though, you might have heard of him: John F. Kennedy.

The guy that invaded Cuba? :p
Thats right, kill the GOOD GUY, support the BAD GUY

Its not usually black and white, but in that case it was

Conservative

1) multiple tax increases including a huge gas tax increase and the largest payroll tax increase in history.

2) Raised business taxes by closing many loopholes.

3) Amnesty for illegal immigrants

4) Biggest expansion of federal government to that time.

5) Biggest increase in deficit to that time.

6) Huge bank bailout.

7) Nominated pro choice surpreme justices.

Yep... sounds like a conservative to me

A conservative politician in the United States of the early 21st Century does everything in his or her power to transfer wealth to the wealthy, to tip the balance of power further in favor of corporations, to emasculate the ability of government to do just about anything except wage war, to deregulate industries that need regulation, and to further the transformation of middle and lower income wage earners into serfs.

Yeah great Regan
His ushering in the era of epic over comsuption really went well...

It could be worse Shadow... we could be commenting on some of President de Valera's oops's during his years in office (ie., the Irish civil war, his recommendation for Ireland's neutrality during WW II, etc.)

Reagan did some great things for the American people... just as Eamon de Valera did some great things for the Irish people. Both made mistakes while in office... which only proves that they were human.

Personally, and I know some will cringe at this, I'll take Reagan and voodoo economics over Obama's economic policy any day of the week! Both policies were flawed but Reagan at least took things in stride. Obama tends to get defensive when people question his grand plan.

A list of all these things please?

Just so we're clear... you can't answer that question.

Sure i can. I also pay attention to what the "conservative" GOP politicians are saying. Apparently you are not.

As I have stated previously, I don't do homework for others. The answers you seek are easy enough to google.

Try:

Republicans seek cuts

And see if you get any hits.

:D

Or,

Republicans seek to maintain tax cuts for the wealthy

Or...

Well, that's enough effort on my part.

I suspected as much. You make a claim that you cannot back up.

Don't be too ashamed. It happens on both sides of the political spectrum. You believe what your politicians tell you. You don't actually bother to see whether or not there is any foundation to it.

Please...you're making me laugh and dribble soup on my keyboard . There's no question that what I posted is the conservative republican agenda, and there are plenty of statements from various republican leaders promising to carry out that agenda. They might use slightly different words, but the meaning and intent are the same.

I can easily "back up" what I posted. The information is readily available. Don't be lazy...look for it. If you can type in a search engine, it is there for the taking. Do some homework. I did.

You made a claim. I asked you to support that claim... and you replied... "you do it".

That's the hallmark of someone whom you should REALLY believe (and yes that's sarcasm).

Never believe anything anyone says if they aren't willing to back it up with proof.

@hakr100: Republicans of the early 21st century are not true conservatives. so your first statement was incorrect. you redeemed yourself when you started calling them Republicans.

Gee...is there a list of rules for being a "true conservative"? If so, who decided what rules are on the list? Who voted in the rulemakers? Was there a vote on the rules?

Eamonn De Valera doomed this country economically, politically and socially
His ihateuk policieds did not end our colonial economic structure, he isolated from the commonwealth, and let the church run the country on social matters
If it were not for Se
