How's this for impulsive?

My HTC Eris was the first smartphone I ever bought, and it really never lived up to my expectations. Rooting it made it usable, but I really couldn't wait until my contract was up (which wouldn't happen until January, 2012). Still, I told myself that I would hang on until then and buy a higher end phone.

Cut to yesterday. I took the day off work and went out to buy some groceries. I wandered into a nearby Verizon store and walked out with a Droid 2.

So much for being patient.

Anyway, it's quite a step up in performance. The only thing I'm deliberating now is whether to root or not.

Congratulations on your new Droid 2, speedracer.

Just keep Verizon's "buyer's remorse" policy in mind. Thirty days and counting. :D

Definitely. I'm really going to give this phone a workout to see how well it's going to perform over the long haul. And, although I really like a vanilla Android interface, I'm liking the pseudo Motoblur widgets.

You sound like me, lol.
I am glad I don't have more expendable income (or any, lol)

LOL! I'm not going to have much expendable income for awhile after this. In order for me to get this phone, the rep told me I had two options. 1.) Add another line to my account and make that my Droid 2. 2.) Buy the phone outright.

Option 2 wasn't feasible so I went with the first. Now I'm basically paying for two phones; one that I use and one that's non-existent.

The crazy crap I do for my gadgets. :)

I have a Droid 2 and Love it.. Keep it for the next 28 Days and then take it back because I am pretty sure something newer/better is coming out pretty soon..

Also the Galaxy S phones might get the Gingerbread (3.0) upgrade soon because the Nexus S is said to be coming out with it stock..

Some phones that MAY be coming soon in the next 30 period of yours:
*Droid 2 Global
*Droid Pro
*HTC Incredible HD (HTC Mecha)
*HTC Merge (Shown up in Best Buys inventory)
*Samsung Fascinate (Already available but since it is a Galaxy S phone it might get the Gingerbread (3.0) update when the Nexus S comes out)

Verizon has a great line up and the choice is yours.

Pro and Global are both out. And the Continuum will be at VZW stores next week(right now internet only). So, don't tempt the fella(or any of us with in out 30 days) because it was hard enough to wait for the D2/D2G.

I'm tempting him and chill out about it (its not like I'm trying to sway him to the piece of crap iphone)..

*The Nexus S is a Samsung phone so there is a HIGH probability that the Samsung Fascinate will get the update when the Nexus S comes out. With a custom ROM from XDA.
*Global is pretty much what he has now just a little different.
*Pro has more of a Blackberry look with the keyboard how it is if he likes that.
*Continuum and Citrus seems like it might be a pretty decent phones.
*HTC Incredible HD aka Mecha seems like a nice phone in my opinion.
*and the HTC Merge I do not know much about personally, kinda like the D1 and D2.

Just giving some options you might want to switch to before your 30 days is up.

Thanks for the ideas about the upcoming phones.

I was thinking that maybe I should've waited until the LTE phones started rolling out, but I live in a fairly out of the way rural area, (we're actually lucky to have 3G here) so I doubt we'll be seeing LTE anytime soon -- possibly the latter part of 2011 or early 2012 I'm guessing.

Until then, I just need to stay out of Verizon stores!

True.. Was the D2 you got actually a D2G? A lot of Verizon stores were giving people the D2G without telling the buyer. If so then CONGRATULATIONS :D

Nope. No SIM card, and I just sent in for my rebate today so I think I'm stuck with this for awhile, which isn't a bad thing.

On a humorous note, I went to Wal Mart this morning and found myself in the AT&T store playing with the iPhone 4 just to see what all the fuss was about. And no, I didn't bring one home.

Maybe I should try to get a job as a reviewer so I can mess around with all these gadgets when they come out.

It is a good thing you did not buy the iPhone 4.. I just recently did a paper on why you should choose an Android phone over a iPhone and it was pretty stacked on the Android side of things..

But back to your D2.. I love my D2 and I think you made a good choice.. I was just giving you your options.. And now they think the D2 has a 1.2 GHz Processor so there is another plus :D

However the HTC Merge has shown up on the Verizon site so you might want to take a look at it at your local store when they get it.. Kinda like the Incredible but with a slide out keyboard like D1/2/2G. You might end up liking it more than your D2. Again just giving options.

How would your contract not expire until 2012? You must have gotten the Eris at the end of its life. You should have done ebay if you didn't have an upgrade.

Yeah, I think I got the Eris in June or maybe the end of May of this year. I did manage to sell the Eris to a friend of someone in the office. I should've gone the ebay route, but like I said, this was such an impulse purchase that I didn't really think everything through.
