Hi all,
maybe somebody already asked this, but I couldn't find an answer here.
I bought my captivate through ebay. it was unlocked already and I don't know how to unlock it (it looks kinda complicated to me).
Does updating froyo erase unlocking?
I'm in China with the captivate bought from US. It is hard to get a help here.
Thank you in advance.

From my experience, no.

I got MyTouch 3G. Unlocked. Original OS is Android 1.5. When it upgraded to Android 1.6. It stayed unlocked. It upgraded to Android 2.2 recently. Stayed unlocked.

My island provider uses Verizon Androids (in partnership with them) and managed to alter the phone settings so it uses the local CDMA network. When the updates happen, like my Droid Eris from 1.5 to 2.1 or my Droid Incredible from 2.1 to 2.2, carrier settings didn't change at all.

I can't say for sure or speak about the Samsung Captivate or AT&T. At least from what I know about Verizon and T-MObile, updates don't restore carrier lock.

What may restore carrier lock is for the phone to do a clear hardware reset, but updates don't do that.

Updates, especially the new ones, won't change your contacts, your apps, your logins, erase or alter your SD data, and they won't even change your home screens.

This is actually really helpful because I'm in a similar situation. I have an HTC Evo 4G that I bought already unlocked from Sprint, but it's been sluggish so I wanted to try an update. I was wondering if I can find a way to actually reload the software however, if that would make a difference with the update? I figure I'll try the update for now, then do a reload when I know for sure
