Root Which Froyo ROM to choose?

Hey all,

Given the success that most people are having using custom ROM's on their vibrant, I'd like to do so as well. I don't really see a benefit of waiting for and using T-Mobile's version if the current custom one's work just fine (and since I really don't care about having TouchWiz or not).

Having said that, which one would you all recommend? I hear great things about Bionix 1.5, Macnut R12, and TeamWhiskey's Onyx R4.2 (no TouchWiz, which I hear is a good thing especially if you have a decent alternative like LauncherPro).

I really don't know the true differences between them all, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Although I am not running a custom ROM, I have read reviews and watched some YouTube videos on the various Froyo roms.

If you don't care for TW Launcher, then may I suggest Axura. It appears to be the most stable, lag-free, and graphically beautiful ROM available. Many people who have tried the various ROMS suggest AXURA by Master.

There are reviews on XDA you can read, also you can Youtube Axura, Macnut Froyo, and Obsidian. Videos are available.

Flashing a new ROM takes literally a few mins from start to end. You could always try out the 3 top ROMs then choose one of your liking.

Anyways, I say Axura.

Hah, I read the same about Onyx R4.2 (non TW version of Obsidian). I'll choose one later on in the day.

I am running Onyx R4.2 for a couple days now and I am very happy with it. The process of flashing via clockworkmod is so quick and easy I suggest you try them all and see which one you like, I have Onyx, Obsidian and Axura on my SD and spent some time switching between them to see which one I preferred, I also have the unofficial leak on there just in case :)

Id tell ya, but then again, i dont know how to install those anyways ;). However, i do have teh Z4Root on my phone. Just havent used it yet.

So ill ask which has been answered i think before. If your rooted, will you still get the OTA's and can you install them or do you have to unroot first?

I assume Axura isnt in the market since i cant find it.

I have tried ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro and Zeam. All are pretty good. I like that i can hide icons and add them on my dock by sliding teh dock to the left or right and nobody knows they are there. That is Launcher Pro.
ADW is a bit more customizable and has many themes to choose from.

Zeam is ok but it just sucked my battery too fast so i deleted it.
I would like to get rid of the bloatware as well.

I don't think they put the actual ROMs in the android market.

Here are some links and videos to help you out, found most of them via xda.

Axura Review video:

To install a ROM, you should follow the directions of that specific developer. Here is a good video for installing Axura.
You basically need to root first, then download some other stuff as explained in the video. Very simple.
Just be careful, sometimes you need to deactivate any lagfix you applied. Also seems like you should never mix a 2.2 rom with a 2.1 kernal, or visa versa. Most of these ROMs come with the appropriate kernal, however it appears if you don't like 2.2 and want to downgrade back to 2.1, you need to make sure you also put a 2.1 kernal.

To download Axura or any other ROM of your choice for the Vibrant you should check out the XDA Forum developers section.
Here is a quick link to Axura, download link is in that thread.

Interesting. I am sorta confused at to what Axura is. I thought it was a Launcher but then he keeps saying he likes to use LP with it.

Ok "master" is the name of a developer, some guy. He made a ROM based on Android 2.2 named "Axura."

There is also a developer named Eugene373 or something like that, and he made "Macnut."

Another developer named sombionix and his group of friends who call themselves "Team Whiskey" because I think he likes to drink whiskey developed a ROM based on 2.2 named Obsidion.

TW launcher is the samsung touchwiz user interface. Axura is the name of the ROM and includes I think 4 different user interface launchers you can choose from, one of which is LauncherPro.

Making more sense?

Yes, and i knew TW was a launcher interface and i dont use it. LP or ADW.

Exactly what i was thinking about Axura. That it looked like a OS to me and is very interesting. Though i dont like the Android maskot and wouldnt want it on my lockscreen...LOL

Now,one more question. I would like to get that Axura but have to ask. IF we somehow get Gingerbread, will i have to unRoot? And will GB install over Axura? Or will i have to go back to 2.1? I dont want to make it too difficult on myself to get GB if we get it....and i really think i am dreaming here considering how we havent even got 2.2 yet.

And to anybody who knows this..Z4Root i think is a new root app in the market. Can you use that instead of OCLF to do the Axura ROM? Reason i would rather use that is because OCLF takes up a lot of space reserved on our phone for Apps because it installs the lag fix as well as roots.

Well, i have everything i need...if Z4Root will work instead of OCLF. Just think ill wait to see if howetechnical has any issues or not when he installs it. Making sure everything works, SMS, MMS, able to change wallpapper, etc, etc.

I jailbroke my iPhone all the time but doing this seems to be a little more technical than JBing, even since they made rooting a lot easier. Otherwise i wouldnt even try it without the one click Root apps they have now.

Yeah, I was a faithful user of TW's Bionix ROM's, but decided to try out something new for Froyo. I tried both Macnut R11-R12, and Axura 2.0.2-2.0.4, and I must say Axura is AWESOME! I'm currently using Axura 2.0.4 with Eugene's A12 kernel, BLN on, all kernel tweaks on, and JFS overkill lagfix (without DB_Data conversion and Bind option), and my phone has never been faster. Battery life is great too. I seriously suggest you try it out, haven't had a problem with this combo yet.

Thanks for the help, I decided to try Axura first. It's in the middle of backing up my current rom.

Zylograth, what do you like about Onyx that you didn't like about Axura? Why'd you settle on that one?

Mostly just the theme and colors used in Onyx vs Axura. Both ROMs seemed functionally equal. Axura comes with multiple launchers and I prefer Launcher Pro so it is all I want to use. I did like the multiple lockscreens on Axura, but after trying them both out I chose Onyx purely based on the color scheme, I like black LOL

Also, Onyx was quite a clean ROM without a lot of extra programs pre loaded and all the bloatware removed.

Did they remove ALL the bloatware? There might be 1 or two i wouldnt mind keeping

Just a few questions for those who have used Axura

1. If I install the Axura rom, will I still be able to play the Avatar file. I like to show off the screen with the movie and don't want to lose it?

2. Is there a considerable difference in battery consumption from the Ji6. I have terrible battery life and am hoping a custom rom would fix that

3. Are there any disadvantages of having the custom rom (not talking about voiding warranty) such as app incompatibilities or anything. Basically, is there anything the stock rom does better than the custom rom?

I just flashed to Axura 2.0.4 and its been great but I have one problem, I lost some of my data like my previous texts and my angry birds save file. I ran restore all apps with data in titanium backup and pretty much everything else is there but this.

I am using the titanium backup now. Is there a way to do a backup faster than doing it one app at a time? Dont see an option for "backup all". Then again, i am removing some of the bloatware with it.
