Are there any free books to read on Android?

I'm just afraid I'll find it really hard and awkward to read and end up not reading!
I found this to be the case, I just didn't like reading books on my phone display. No matter how I tweaked the settings there was too much eye strain for me.
I had Aldiko, it's really nice, but ended up uninstalling it. For now I'm sticking with paper books but may eventually look into a "real" reader like Kindle.

don't like the idea of giving my credit card to kindle
i searched for laputa - but couldnt find a match - i've got android 2.1 on a x10 mini pro

aldiko looks good

hmmm... i'm thinking about reconsidering giving my credit card details to kindle now
edit: i like reading from my x10 mini pro - ya... it's small i know - but i go to sleep fiddling with it! can't get to sleep otherwise! reading a book - i think that would work nicely :)

also: i just tried adobe again - just discovered u don't have to swipe and can just touch the right or left of the screen - maybe it's not that bad now :)

why cant i find on market on my phone?
i don't like installing from other sources
am i being paranoid?
I don't use the stock Market app, but I tested it by typing in "Moon+ Reader" (without the quotation marks), and I found it just fine.

AppBrain Android Market - find the best Android Apps and Games is a service for accessing the official Android Market from your PC (see FAQ#2). They also have a handy-dandy app. I don't use the stock Market app anymore as I prefer AppBrain.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Baen Free Library yet:
WebScription Ebooks - Free Library

Actually, hardly anything at Baen is more than five or six dollars (US).

You needn't be restricted by format either, if you find free books that aren't .epub - the free desktop program Calibre will let you convert many formats to .epub (readable with Moon+ or Aldiko, both excellent readers). I recommend against readers which incorporate links to illegal download sites (you can usually tell from Market comments mentioning recent best-sellers), but Aldiko and Moon+ are both legit. (edited to add: another good reader is FBreader)

Note that Calibre will not handle files with DRM unless the DRM is removed first, which requires other free tools. You won't find DRM on most free books though.

I like the nook app myself. Coming from iphone it feels almost exactly like ibooks (or whatever that app was called). You can load any .epub on it. That means if you download a book online (and I am only condoning public domain files), you can read it with the nook app. There are plenty of sites that supply public domain books. For the most part, anything within an app like this that is free is going to be a public domain work.
