Got fired/laid off looking for new job!!!

Since this is the lounge and people talk about different things that sometimes do not have any relation to android I thought I post this here.

Well I work as hotel security. I use to work there every day until the hotel decided that the company I work for is needed only during the weekend. So I went from a 5 day work schedule to 3 day work schedule. During those 3 days I had two 8hour shifts and one 16 hour. Today when I went to work my boss called me as I was clocking in to let me know that they lost the contract and I am not needed any more. He says he may be able to find something for me to work but I very highly doubt it (holidays and all).

Here is my question. I am 22 year old college graduate - I have a BA in Political Science and International Relations. I believe I am intelligent because I graduated in the top sixth of my class and I read and understood all of the assigned books in college. I have written numerous papers and I am even on the road to getting my graduating thesis published by a scholarly journal. I am looking for some better way to find a job that fits my qualifications better than security officer/guard/ Paul Blart/ rent a cop/ top flight security. Those epithets do not bother me because they are true.

Is there any specific job/field that I can look to be able to utilize what I learned in college?

One important fact is I do not want to work in Sales - I hate doing it!!!

More interesting facts if you want. I did security from high school onward in order to have enough money to pay for school and my car. Now that I am out I would really like to earn some money as a reserve before I actually am ready to start graduate school. I have always been interested in law in particular international business law or international criminal law (International Criminal Court).

I would think your boss did you a favor by 'letting you go'. With those credentials you should be getting a lot higher pay. Keep looking mate, even if the economy is bad, there will still be companies/employer out there looking for better employees to improve their work force/productivity. From what I see, I think you can be a very good Consul to a US embassy somewhere in the world. But that's just me, not really knowing who you really are - just an opinion.

To be honest your BA degree is pretty useless. I don't know what you could do with that degree.

You sound like a smart person, so maybe try taking the LSAT and studying for law school.

I'm curious behind the motivation for the Political Science / International Relations degree - what did you think you could do after graduation?

I went for degrees that could be applied to work directly - accounting, engineering, etc. I have a relative who got a degree in Asian Studies.. WTF? What the hell can you do with a degree like that?

People really need to think long and hard before they waste tens / hundreds of thousands of dollars and 4-5 years on useless degrees.

Yeah... I got a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and to be honest I am now working in Outside sales.

To be honest I like the job and it is fun as hell.

Now I gotta ask you one more thing: why are you against sales? Beggars cannot be choosers. I would take what you can get.

My Psych degree is great for sales and I plan on getting into pharm or med sales later on which will definitely handle it great.

And I am thinking about going for my grad degree as time goes on.

I bet Psychology major if applied correctly can be very good in the Human Resources (Dept of a major company, a temp agency, etc.). Political Science has a lot of possibilities, they can be professors, political aides, fund raisers, lobbyist, etc. There are a lot more jobs than engineers, lawyers, doctors and nurses. In the end it's how you apply the knowledge whether it lands you a job directly related to your degree. Asian Studies? Again you can be a professor, researcher, historian, or even a foreign representative of a company who sent you to a place where you know the culture. I mean come on! Ultimately, it's you who will decide if you just wasted your time educating yourself in something you won't use. But if there is a course, there should be openings for you if you know where to find it.

Actually I think you were right on the money - I was thinking of going to law school after graduation the only thing is I did not think the events after I graduated would unfold as they did. I worked through the time I was in school so I had some money saved up however I needed to help my family and they ran out. I picked up the first job I could find after school because I really needed to get some income home.

Now I asked my parents for some help and they are willing to help me financially for a little bit until I decide where to go. I am working on preparing myself for LSAT exam so that I can go to law school the only disadvantage is I do not really have volunteering.


A person suggested working at an embassy, I have been looking to find out where it is that I need to apply to be able to get into that field. Do you have any idea where I can look?

I have a friend who lived abroad for several years, speaks a couple of foreign languages fluently, got an MBA from the best International school of business - Thunderbird school of management. He tried to apply for an embassy position, took a bunch of tests, including flying to Washington DC for the final test. In the end he didn't get selected.

Don't mean to depress you but it takes quite a bit to get an embassy job. It's like trying out for the NBA, it's a long shot in the dark.

teach.... continue your education, then get out of teaching... It's better pay than security gaurd.... you have 3 times where you will have to actively search out jobs as you get let go until you are offered tenure. 5 years of that, you have some more education to fall back on and then leave it.

I have to agree, it might be a shot in the dark, but this will always be the case for any highly desirable jobs. There will be competition and chances are, there will be a few who will be more qualified, more experienced, more intelligent, etc. The trick is to convince them that you're the man for the job. If this means you need more certifications, license and undergo several more exams to prove it, then why not at least try? Even if you didn't make it, passing all these test can at least be a good resume builder.

A few similar trait that any one who's made it to the top is that they had the persistence to keep climbing. And maybe tenacious enough to keep on trying no matter how many hurdles they encounter.
