Good afternoon,
I am new to these boards and have a few questions about rooting. I have noticed several people stating if you have to ask than you don't want to know anyway.... I don't subscribe to complete ignorance as I love to obtain as much knowledge about something before i make a decision.
Anyway,
I understand that rooting allows certain changes to my Droid 2 but other than that - I have no understanding as to what anything else means such as Kernal, etc... The more I read the more confused I get. So many are rooting and are so knowledgeable and having fun with it that I'm completely intrigued but again, COMPLEELY confused. Is there a site that I should go to that can start me off on this journey understanding that I know NOTHING but do want to start from the beginning or must I wait and find a "friend" that will help me understand. I started downloading z4 and busybox but quicly uninstalled them as I was getting over my head.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

No one is going to sit down and write a guide to rooting just for you. The best way to learn is the same way most of us did. Read. A lot. Then ask specific questions. A few months ago I had no idea what rooting was. Now I have a rooted overclocked phone with a rom and I learned how to do it by reading these forums and a few blogs.

WOW!!! I guess I've been told.
I have read a lot but several things make little sense. Let's use your comment for example. "overclocked" I don't know what that means and most on these boards speak about it without explaining what it is.
ROM = READ ONLY MEMORY..That one I knew.
My problem is when I'm told to go to this particular menu - it skips HOW to get to that page. is the page on the computer or on the phone? etc...
If you read many of the posts, they are directed at people that have a clue. Gaining knowledge is the greatest power but excessive knowledge is like trying to fly when you can't walk.
I've been a coach for 30 years and I make my players crawl b4 they walk, walk b4 they fly, then if all goes well - fly on their own.
getting posts from people telling me that no one will guide me is being part of the problem NOT part of the solution.
I think no response would've been better than telling me that.
I'm not an idiot....I'm just new to this computer phone jargon and was looking for a little hand holding so I could start to "crawl"
Thanks for your "help"

Instead of being a jackass about it, ask specific questions after you read the stickies. As S62 said, everyone on here was a rookie at one point. We all had to sift through hours and hours of useless posts to get what we were after. Overclocking is increasing the frequency of the main CPU.
the d2 runs at a frequency of 1GHz(gigahertz)(1000MHz) Overclocking increases the frequency to a current safe maximum of 1300GHz allowing for more computations per second, at the cost of battery life and in some cases processor stability.

I would strongly suggest reading through the general all things root, droid 2 general, and taking a trip to XDA-Developers forums and reading up over there as there is a wealth of information on both sites.

If you dont understand specific items, ask and Im positive someone will explain. Coming in asking very vague questions, then getting an attitude when the boards populace doesnt' stop dead in their tracks to answer questions that are answered in just about every "all things root" forum on this board is rather assuming and arrogant.

I recall my coach telling me my job was cover the crease, he gave some general pointers but it was my job to figure it out in the end. He didnt hold my hand every step of he way. He would critique but for the most part let me figure it out.
