What is your home screen replacement of choice...

So... I see lots of people talking about lots of home screen replacements, and I'm curious as to which is the most popular...

So, this is pretty easy... Choose your home screen replacement of choice... If you wanna post why, that's cool.. If not, just select one...

This is partly out of curiosity, and partly because I still need to decide which to use!! lol...

It's actually only Home++. I waited a LONG time before I loaded one because of all the reports of problems. I picked this one because it seemed to have the least reports of problems. I've only had it for a week and so far it has been very nice and stable.

Same thing here... i waited awhile. Then finally i ran out of space on my three home screens. Home++ was the answer.... I didn't want to completely change the look of the phone, just expand its functionality.

Between Home++, Better Cut, and Apps Organizer everything is sweet. Highly recommend the last one! just found it!

Wow.. Home+++ is dominating... That's what I'm using now, but I have to admit.. I'm a little jelous of the others because of some of the amazing themes I've seen!!

Home++, because the performance just blows all the other alternatives away.

Even with 7 screens and widgets galore, there is no slowdown.

One important setting: make sure you keep home++ in memory persistently. It's under the performance category of the settings.

The Droid has plenty of RAM and this setting will make home++ load up instantly after a phone call, app, etc.

Home++ is by far my favorite home replacement. I used GDE for a while but it was just to slow for me, so I tried home++ and I am very pleased. I do miss the application taskbar (or whatever its called) in GDE though. I am trying to figure out a way to access the files for GDE and try to find the code for the taskbar and put it in home++.

Home++ is just so damn good, I can't get away from it. It's had the fewest crashes/issues of any home screen replacement. It has a beautifully clean interface with actual useful buttons at the bottom. By default, the notification bar is hidden, making the phone even prettier to look at. The speed is spectacular and, of course, the developer is absolutely awesome, constantly updating the app and adding features. I've tried all of the other home replacements. For now, Home++ it is.

GDE all the way!!!!....tried Home+++....liked the layout....but i found the jumble of the buttons on the bottom...even though you can slide through them to be not as clean as i would like....with GDE theme options i can download cleaner looking interfaces with minimal button clutter...i have to admit the full pan of the screen minus the notification bad really makes your wallpapers come to life...but the notification bar is necessary for me since i pummel through the normal email and text usage of a normal user....if there was a way to limit the sever number of buttons in the bottom area for a cleaner looking interface...i would be swayed to switch...but for right now....GDE is smooth and crisp...

You mean the 6 buttons on the bottom (Phone, Contacts) ? If so you can turn them off in the options. I dunno why you would though, it's so convenient.

But yeah that bar is customizable.

I've noticed that, on my Droid, it's not as swift as I'd like, taking a few seconds at times to load everything when I return to the home screen. Where do I find this "performance" category?

Hit the Menu button from the home screen, hit Preferences, Performance is in there.

Yea I spent a good amount of time playing with Panda home and it had the best customization and organzation other there but it just kept crashing constantly it drove me crazy! So i finally switched to home++ and havnet looked back since. I do run into weird glitches every once in a while as well as force closing and crashing but it's no where near the amount I got with pandahoom. Also i got Apps organizer (free) and now i have one label carrying 10 apps instead of 10 apps on one screen. Makes for a much nicer and cleaner look plus allows for more use of stylish widgets.

I'm almost afraid to set it to persistent. As it is I have to reboot my Droid every now and then to free up memory. I use ATK, and the only things on my Ignore list are Lookout Mobile Security, Alarm Clock, Voice Dialer, Settings, and MotoTorch LED (I use the widget).

After a fresh reboot I run ATK to kill the background stuff I don't often use, and I'll have over 100mb of ram. By the end of the day, after running ATK I'll have ~60mb-70mb. Eventually it goes down to 40, and that's when I usually end up rebooting.

Note that this happened before I started using Home++.

I have tried Home ++, Open Home, aHome, and Dxtop. I never tried either GDE or Pandahome so I can't comment on them.

Out of the 4 I tried I liked Dxtop the best for that fact that is I can also use some open home themes with it and I also like the up/down/left/right lay out of screens not to mention the 5 icon bar at the bottom.

DxTop also runs very fast and I don't have to exclude it from ATK like the others.

The last bit is the lock screen. Also comes with a an iPhone type unlock screen which you can disable if you choose.

Ofcourse this is all based on preference and opinion, and to me Dxtop was my favorite.

I'm still using the "default" home that our phones come with. It's snappy for me, but soon I will be out of space to add more icons/widgets.

Can someone list the steps I need to take before installing Home++? For example, 1) remove all default home widgets, etc. Is that the only recommended step? Also, is there a way to "toggle" back from default Home to Home++?

In my case, I'll only be using a home replacement to add additional screens. My default home scrolling is fast.

I don't know about the other home replacements, but I'm using Home++ and not because it's free (I've donated a bit to the dev). There are some cool things coming through the pipeline for Home++ which is the real reason to stick with Home++ plus the dev is really keen on keeping his ear to the community and seeing what they want in their home replacement. Oh, if you all are using it, donate because it helps push development along and make the app better. Some of the devs are doing it on the side to FT jobs. Right now, his rate limiting step is just finding time.
