Froyo on Vibrant?

Anyone have any updates on whether and when a Froyo update will be coming from T-Mobile onto Vibrant?

No one knows if or when. The lack of any information is not a good sign. They are already 3 months behind htc and moto, so it's bad at this point. I think they'll miss their commitment of delivering it in 2010.

For Daedalus, You are right about other mentions to my question, but the last such mention that I searched and found was posted a week ago. This seems to be a question worth asking again from time to time doesn't it?

If they can't get it right for a phone that they've sold millions of around the world in a relatively short period of time, good luck if you wind up with a Samsung phone that isn't quite as popular.

After following some threads in here for a while I feel compelled to chime in and admit this will likely be my last Samsung device. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater and agree that the Galaxy S (Vibrant in my case) is a nice device. What's upsetting to see is so much consumer demand for an update to Froyo and Samsung's apparent failure to deliver in a reasonable timeframe...especially seeing their competitors communicate with their users and deliver the update much sooner. This is blatant case of the classic "we don't care about you after the sale" mentality. Either that or Product Management within Samsung is not delegating responsibilities properly or they are short on resources. My employer requires 2.2 for security reasons to be able to connect to corporate email. This will force me to either go root or buy something else. I can't justify going for the Galaxy tablet after this experience even though my wife is in the market for one. boo hiss.

I'm not sure it's entirely on T-Mobile... After all, the Captivate, the Epic, and the Fascinate are also still on 2.1. The common denominator here is Samsung. I do know those carriers have provided the 2.2 release for other devices in the same time period.

That is true but i do know Samsung sent out 2.2 to the carriers already.

No way it's the carriers fault if AT&T/Sprint/Verizon/TMobile all haven't delivered yet. Only common point is Samsung.

There was rumor that we could get 2.2 by end of Nov, but today is the last day of Nov and still no news. Let's expect something in Dec.

It is the mistake of Samsung not providing the versions on time or not enforcing the T-Mobile to release it on time, in all ways it is Samsung loosing the market not T-Mobile.

The version of T-Mo's 2.2 was leaked awhile back (Been running it since it came out, in fact), so most likely it'll be out (I'd imagine before the end of the year)


As for Samsung being behind, checking on Androidspin and XDA-Dev's news, there are a LOT of phones by a LOT of manufacturers that are still either running 2.1 or are JUST NOW GETTING 2.1, so Samsung's not really any more guilty than the rest. They all suck at OS updates :-/


That being said, I don't know why Samsung would bother with 2.2, since 2.3 is "right around the corner". Maybe that's why they've decided to hold off. Who knows. Doubtful. The official 2.2 will probably be out in the next couple of weeks, just in time for everyone to start crying "Where's 2.3?!?!?"


2.2 runs fine on the Vibrant as it stands now, so I've got no complaints.

Sorry, but that's BS. The US Galaxy S (pick your carrier) is comparable to the Droid X and the HTC Incredible and came out around the same time.

Those phones have had 2.2 for 2-3 months already.

You can't compare this to an older phone.

Samsung has totally dropped the ball here. There's no debate that they are way behind the competition.

You're lucky I guess? All I know is not only did JI6 NOT fix my gps, my phone now has almost half the battery life it did before.

Been hearing the holdup is the modem for data working right with these phones on 2.2. A lot of the custom 2.2 Froyo ROMs are having data issues as well.

I've been an original G1 user, than mytouch and now Samsung Vibrant. I also owned all versions of the iPhones and Blackberries.

In my opinion, (in regards to Android/Google). Unless you are an "official Google phone" (just look in the back of an Android phone). If it says "with Google" or something like that, you will get the most support.

Factor in Samsung is always behind in software support, you are asking for a disaster in terms of 2.2 being released on the Vibrant (Vibrant not an "official Google" phone plus Samsung).

The Nexus S (or whatever it's called will be an official google phone) so Google will let Samsung have access to the latest updates much quicker.

Just my 2 cents. The HTC Droid, X, Incredible are all "official" google phones along with the G1, G2, mytouch 3g (notice they got the 2.2 update also on a much older phone).
