Help Skype and Google Voice How To

So here is what I did... I now have a working VOIP phone service via my T-Mobile Tab..

-- Get the hacked Skype App (allows 3G calling) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=156KWZVH
-- Get Google Voice from Market
-- Go to skype.com and setup an account
-- Order a Skype Internet Number (it's $30 for a year right now -- normally $60)
-- Add a Skype calling plan ( I went with $2.99 a month for unlimited calling)
-- Set Skype to display your Google Voice Number (Caller ID Settings)
-- Set Google Voice to forward all calls to your Skype number
-- Go into Google Voice App and set it up to use your Skype number for voicemail notifications.

It works and it works pretty darn well...

Pros:

--Incoming and outgoing voice capabilities
--Unlimited calling in the US and Canada for $2.99 a month
--With 3G data plan you always have phone functions to dial out and receive
--Use Google Voice for SMS messages and you only have the one number.

Cons:

--If you don't want to use the Google Voice number for SMS then you will have 2 numbers. The one that came on your Tab that is used for SMS/MMS and a number for phone usage.

--Price for this to work per year amounts to $66 ($30 for the Skype number and $36 for the unlimited plan) Not really a con if you consider this is the total cost for a year of unlimited cell (VOIP) calls from you Tab

--If you use Google Voice for SMS it does not do MMS

Here is how it works...

When someone calls your Google Voice number it forwards it to the Skype number and the Tab rings...

When you call someone it displays your Google Voice number...

COOL....

Sorry for being a bit ignorant here, but how do I use the url listed in the instructions to download and install the skype app. I only know how to use the market to get apps.

It will download an apk file. Use Astro or some file explorer to browse to your download directory. Once you try to launch it (with application manager after clicking), it will require you to change permissions. On that screen, check the "unknown sources" box.

That's quick and dirty...but it will get you there.

It's a yearly fee for the online phone number, but they do give a 50% discount if you buy the annual Skype calling plan at the same time.

Once you purchase the "online" number there will be a link to set up a caller id. Some are able to use the Google Voice number, but I had to use a different phone as my GV number wouldn't work.

Yes, it will work with a wired headset just fine. I've read where it may be possible to use a bluetooth headset in the future, but right now it is not supported.

I've made/received a few calls with the Galaxy Tab and the calls are very clear on both ends of the conversation. My thanks again to the OP for pointing this out to us.

Just bought it and installed on my Sprint Galaxy Tab and it so far I'm able to make calls. I haven't be able to get it to receive a call, but making a call is a huge step forward in my opinion!

Edit: It receives calls too as long as you give out your Google Voice number.

I am using a wired headset and haven't tested any bluetooth devices.

I actually just did this. Took me some time to figure out how to set it up, wish I read your post first! Anyway it works great. My setup was so that I have a girlfriend in the US (I live in Canada) and I wanted to set up a local US number for her to call me to avoid LD charges for her. I originally wanted to do everything via google voice but gvoice does not support forwarding calls to Canadian #'s. So I create a US skype number which does support forwarding to Canadian #'s. Otherwise the rest of the setup is the same.

One general question... my girlfriend can essentially call me with the skype # and the gvoice #. Since gvoice would foward for my skype, there is an extra forward there. Does that extra call forward mean decrease in quality? Usually the more redirects you add, the impact in performace (generally speaking). But maybe it doesn't apply to VoIP.

this is great Im using this in europe while I am here on business.
I can call all my friends back in the states and they can call me and it only uses my data connection love it :thumbsup

Skype and Google voice are good. But businesses prefer better security during online meetings, hence many of them use RHUB`s web conferencing servers. It works from behind the firewall, as a result total security.
