Hello all. I guarantee you there's a little hate in some people's eyes when they read this topic title. But I'm actually not here to brag about the iPhone, I'm here to talk Droid. The Motorola Droid.

Basically, here's the thing. I might be switching to Verizon for better service, and I was thinking the Motorola Droid might be the closest thing to an iPhone that I can get. My only problem is, I LOVE my iPhone. It's been my favorite phone for a couple years now and I hate to have to switch to another phone.

Here's my question: Will I love the Droid as much as I love my iPhone? I love knowing that I can run multiple things in the background. I'm gonna like Verizon's service guaranteed, especially with the fact they got #1 in customer service according to JD Power and Associates. But I still have the thing in my mind knowning that it's still not an iPhone.

Please, I need advice aswell many cool things about the Droid that I will like and make me commit to getting the Droid.

Unfortunately I can't tell you if you will like the Droid as much as you like your iPhone. It's personal preference. It will take some getting used to. A lot of things are not the same, though I'm sure you understand that. Once you've had it for a few weeks, you'll know if you want to keep it. If you're sticking with Verizon, though, there's no better phone. The Eris is just a baby Droid, and all of the other smartphones are Blackberry or - gag - WinMo.

Having used iPhones, I can tell you that I like the Droid a thousand times better. Then again, I dislike the iPhone and Apple in general, so I probably don't have the same taste as you. The only thing I can really tell you that may help you make your decision is that my iPhone owning friends really like my phone and are even envious of a lot of the things I can do with it. Also, if you like to make things your own, customization is limitless, not just restricted to the apps you have. I understand this isn't for everybody. You may notice that the Droid is a little bit less "ready" out of the box, and you may need (or more likely want) to tweak everything to make it perfect for you. I'm constantly changing my phone. That's just me, I find it enjoyable. For many people, though, once you find that perfect UI setup, you'll be much happier with it than being stuck with what the manufacturer gave you, I'd hope.

As far as capabilities, the iPhone is still better for music integration and playback. The on-screen keyboard is still a little bit ahead of the Droid's, and of course our app store is still smaller (though it's growing very quickly). The Android Facebook app sucks, unfortunately. Other than those things, I think the Droid beats the iPhone in every way. You will have to get used to double tap zoom (or download Dolphin browser / xScope if you want pinch zoom) and you will have to do some searching to find replacement apps for some of the things you used on your iPhone, but it shouldn't be too bad.

No one can guarantee that you'll like it. It all depends on how YOU see the motorola droid. If you keep in mind that it's a good phone, you'll love it. The iPhone is great, but if you want to like the motorola droid, try messing with one for a bit, and get to see what features the iPhone is missing. If you like it, so be it, if you don't, so be it. It's your opinion.
But in my opinion, ANY android OS phone > iPhone
Not that the iPhone is bad or anything.

It is THE best phone for verizon, so that limits your options on verizon.

As an ipod touch user, im familiar with the iphone minus the crappy ATT.

The apps, for high quality games the droid does not ....yet. It has games, the app store has DOUBLED in one month (10k to 20k)...thats a huge momentum. You will find many familiar IPHONE apps on the droid market.

YOU will find lots of subject matter apps that apple would never let you touch available (tethering apps already exist and work, as well as pr0n!).

Anyway, the phone part is phenominal, the facebook app(s) are probably about 70-80% as good as the iphone one, but the lead designer quit the iphone app market ...so...you never know...he may design a better one.

So much upside, its a solid phone, lots of free apps that Do something well. You can drag and drop files like a thumb drive...anywhere and it works well.

multiple apps, multiple interfaces you can download, its a true geeks gadget where the iphone was the gadget for the masses (the stupids).

I am switching my 2 iphone 3Gs to the Droid aka Milestone comes early 2010 in canada.Can't wait!
I bought the Iphones in the first place because of the "jailbreak" for the customizition. The iphone is a glorified toy and the Droid is a glorified Adult toy,and now that I have a choice I decided to opt for a computer phone.It will be challenging, that's what I like and I can't be bothered to playing games all the time. Fyi,the last time I counted there were 20,000 apps.
Bottom-line is I no longer want to be "Controled" by apple if I can help it.The Android has addressed my issue and it's a better alternative,far better!
BTW,It only took 10mins when I played with it in the store (it's worth to drive across the U.S border) to convince me that the Droid is THE "Iphone" I was looking for.It can do so many things that my iphone 3g CAN'T. I suggested you go and play with it, with an opened mind.

the funny thing is, you can make any android phone vary "IPhone" like. If you are heavy into I tunes and you know it like the back of your hand then at the vary least there will be some growing pains! Most likely you will not like it. I hate to say it but every one I know thats spends any amount of time per week on I tunes or messing with music and play lists on I tunes or any other apple service has not been able to get over the learnig curve of a WM phone or Android phone.
That being said, I feel that the android OS and the droid are some of the greatest cell phone products out there and if you can get over the adjustment of it all you will love it but it wont be immediate

Everyone else has said all that I would have, but for me the only thing I miss from the iPhone is the games. The graphics are top notch much like a PSP and the selection of quality games is amazing, but the Droid is capable of running those same games so someone just needs to port them. App wise you should be fine, You can always check out AndroLib, Find all applications and games available in the Android Market for your Android Phone, HTC Dream, HTC Magic etc... to see what the market has.

I love my DROID, used an iPhone before, but never owned one.

I wanted and iPhone, and was hoping that Verizon would bring it in, but then the DROID showed up, alas, I have my DROID, and very happy with it.

Here's the short answer:

If you're looking for an iPhone UX, then I would suggest you wait until a) the iPhone is released on VZW, or b) the new HTC flagship Android phone is released (some say January, some say April). The HTC Sense UI is the closest UX to the iPhone, IMO. It's pretty slick and fairly simple to use (though, not as simple as iPhone). On top of that, you get most of the benefits of the Android OS (albeit masked under the Sense UI).

Now, if you're looking for the closest "Google Experience," then I suggest you run, not walk, to your nearest VZW and pick up a DROID. It's a phenomenal device, running virtually the same hardware as the iPhone. It's as quick (or quicker) than the iPhone in many regards. Its UX leaves you a bit wanting, but it's not a deal breaker. I mean, I own a DROID and love it!

The real difference between the two will come down to personal preferences. I like the native Google experience with the DROID and like having my memory freed up to run applications and such. I'd rather not have HTC's Sense UI app running all the time, taking up memory, slowing stuff down. This is bound to improve with their new device, housing the 1GHz Snapdragon processor, but its running a new version of Sense for 2.0, so eventhough it uses 100mb to run on 1.5 now, who knows how much memory it needs to run on 2.0?

If you want an iPhone-like UX, pick up the next HTC Android device.
If you want a Google Experience, pick up the DROID.

You won't regret either. Guaranteed!

I totally agree with gdroid in saying that in my own opinion... the droid IS the best phone hands down as far as capabilities and as being a phone. If you are worried about losing your iphone as far as games/widgets, do like I did and buy a ipod touch 2nd gen/ 3rd gen! I love them both! Can honestly say that I have a 2nd gen touch and can say that the droid is way faster processing wise than my iPod. Only flaw that I have noticed with my droid is that I can not change my wireless settings on my router but still can with my Pod. Let us know what you do!! Welcome to the DROID forums!!

I am a HUGE apple fan and I love their inovations (esp computers, applications, AND the iphone). However, I always stuck with verizon due to their service so the closest thing I ever came to an iphone was an ipod touch. After using the ipod touch for months on my school's campus, I was able to say that an iPhone wouldve been great to have.

Like many verizon customer, I was envious of the iPhone, However, service was important (hence, a phone should work like a phone right?). So I got the droid since android was considered the 'second best' operating system of all smartphones. However, after owning a droid for couple weeks now, I was wrong. I fell in love with the android OS and would never decide to go back to wanting the iPhone, EVEN if it somehow went to verizon.

If anything, i'd HIGHLY recommend you still get the android and play with it for 30 days. And then you can make your own decision. When you do, (whether u go android or iphone), please let us know!

nicely put, for an iphone users to change to something is very hard,like they're going to fall in love with it and get trapped. They're babies still with the umbilical cord attached. You know many iphone users are too embarrassed to admit that they would like to change or else why would they go around checking other phones.
This apple control thing are very powerful.

That being said. Apple may be innovators, but I hate being told what to do and because they block so much like music files that only can play on their systems or the fact that i cant choose:
my own home screen
my preferred virtual keyboard
my preferred phone dialer

my biggest favorite is the fact that this forum provided me with the 2.01 update two days early and i updated my phone in 5 minutes (without having to plug it into itunes first)

agree, It's so sad that no one realizes it, but most of the people only played games on it and it really doesn't matter.I bet 1/3 of the Iphone users are kids anyway.
You forgot about the battery replacement.Apple don't even trust or allowed you to replace the battery.Even have the audacity to charge over hundred dollars to change the battery that cost $30.00. Such power control.

Everything you love about the iPhone, is on the droid.. minus maybe a few apps (although, most of the apps i used, i have found on the Android market... movies, sports, and the utilities).... you can categorize everything into folders and the widgits are very nice

If its the interface your worried about, i downloaded a home replacement called DxTop, it makes my unlock screen identical to the iPhone, there are clock widgits to get your time looking like iPhone's, and the Handcent SMS texting app, has an iPhone overlay, so even ur texting can resemble that of an iPhone.... with the 3rd party development, you wont miss much with apple

the only downside is the easy sync with iTunes and some multimedia aspects, but other than that, the Droid is an overall better device, you wont be dissappointed.

Why in the world you want to make your screen looks like an iphone.I just made my 2 iphone Screens looks like Droid with jailbreak because apple rejected the app for the apple app store.

I came from an iPhone to the Droid myself and it's so much better. Faster, More features, better camera, lots of apps, What can your iphone do that droid can't??? Not much, Droid can do a lot more and I do not regret switching especially with Verizon's large 3G coverage and excellent reception.

1 thing that I do like about the iphone is that it's lighter, less bulkier.
