Add contacts separately from GMail - User Manual

Hi all,

Just got my Motorola Droid. I've loaded up all the Google stuff as usual and all is well. What I'd like to do is create contacts from WORK and keep them separate from my personal stuff (GMail Contacts, etc). Can I, and if so, how?

Secondly, is there a user guide for this beast other than the dinky booklet that came with it?

Not really sure what you're trying to do here... can you clarify? Are you looking for contact groups? Contacts that don't sync?

I believe all of your contacts auto-sync to Gmail. Your best bet is probably to add these contacts and put them in the "work" group in your contact list. That way they will be separated in Gmail contacts as well. I'm not sure if there's a better way to do what you want to do, unfortunately

Thanks for the replies, guys. You both understand. iI want to add my coworkers as contacts with phone numbers only, but I want to do it out of GMail, and I don't want them to get into my GMail... Possible?

Actually, now that I think about it, you can turn off auto-sync for your contacts. I would assume this prevents the contacts from syncing both ways - phone to Gmail and vice versa. In Contacts > Account Settings there's an option for it.

If I understand correctly, you just want to add the contacts to your phone without having them sync to your Gmail contacts. I think that might work. Only one way to find out.

I think the OP want's TWO ways of adding/storing contacts:

(a) His personal friends and family - those he DOES want to sync with Googles Cloud.

(b) His co-workers and other business contacts - those he wants to add to the phone but NOT to sync with Googles Cloud.

Not sure if that's possible.

As for the contacts, i haven't been able to do what you are asking, but your best bet is to play with your contacts in GMAIL and see what you can come up with. The "My Contacts" category is what will show on the droid.

Are you using the stock contacts app (the one that came with the phone)? Open up the Applications menu from the home screen and select the one named "Contacts". If that doesn't get you it, what options do you see when you press the menu button on Contacts?

Under Display Options, select your gmail account, and from there you can select which groups to display - I think they will all sync, but only the group(s) selected will display on your phone.

This was confusing to do. But I did figure it out. Thanks for all the help.
I was able to categorize all my contacts.

i linked my outlook and aol contacts onto my gmail account.
i went through them on gmail and catagorized them. when the droid is set to "sync gmail" it will sync everything you do on gmail. (under accounts & sync-manage accounts)

what problems are you having?

Ah... You put them into GMail. I'm trying to not do that. But I have at this point, so it is what it is. Thanks, all.

it took me a long time to merge the duplicate contacts. but i got them all to look the way i want. it was easy to organize them on gmail.
then on the droid you can pick which category you want to see. the rest will be hidden' until you want to view them.
