Help Ready for early upgrade/Evo?? Recommendations?

Hi:

I'll reach the one year mark with my moment in a couple of weeks and will be eligible for an early upgrade.

What do you recommend? The Evo or something else?

i'm in the same boat as you I got my upgrade Nov 3 and I still can decide on a phone I've heard that optimum s is good I wonder if the transform will be better once it gets 2.2

I blatantly refuse to waste ten bucks a month on an epic or evo until my city gets 4g

I went to the Sprint store today and checked out the Optimus, Transform and the Zio phones. The Optimus is definitely the better of the three at present. Transform might be a good choice only after it gets 2.2 but the battery life will still suck and the screen isn't the greatest. The Optimus phone is free now(online), so I'd recommend it if you're not interested in 4G phones.

The best advice is to spend as much time as you can in a store playing with every phone you're considering. I own both the Evo and the Epic. My wife and I have swapped phones on several occasions and I'm always happy to get my Evo back. The Epic has all the gaudy specs and the gorgeous screen, but the Evo for lack of a better description, just fits better. For me, it's special like my original Startac was special. The Epic still waits for a gps fix and 2.2. It's a little off putting how slow Samsung is to update/fix the device. The Evo OTH is the most solid and stable phone and/or PDA I've ever owned. Usually, I'd say that a device as old as the Evo is a bit long in the tooth to waste an upgrade on, but I haven't used anything available now that is significantly better than it. Both phones are great devices light years better than the Moment and Pre they replaced. Keep in mind that the Evo is my daily phone, so I may be biased.

My only concerns with the Evo are its size and the screen. I wish HTC would have put an AMOLED screen on it and reduced the size to 4". It feels too big to hold next to the ear. I didn't know about the GPS issues with the Epic because I was going to use my upgrade in a month to get it. As the owner of a Moment, I too am frustrated with how slow Samsung is with fixes. Thank God for Noobnl and the like because with his latest ROM and inxane's kernel, my Moment is 90% better than it was before.

Among non-4G phones, the Optimus is a very good choice and free is always good

In addition, compared to EVO, the $50 premium for Epic, a phone running 2.1 with inferior GPS is like paying $50 to have a physical keyboard for a year (next upgrade). And if you take into account when the 2.2 and GPS fix arrives you will be using the updated phone for less than a year. Also, with a screen size of EVO, does one really miss a physical keyboard? I mean the screen size will facilitate easier access on soft keyboard compared to smaller screens on Hero or Moment.

Before owning one, I too thought the Evo was too big. Now, I wouldn't want a smaller screen. Even the 4" screen on the Epic feels a tiny bit cramped when using a keyboard in portrait. The Epics screen is stunning, but super AMOLED wasn't available when the Evo was released. The Moments regular AMOLED was fine until you were outdoors in sunlight, when the search for shade and the brightness widget began. I'm fine with the Evo's "plain" TFT, the only time I really notice the difference is when it and the Epic are side by side.

I've read mostly positive reviews about the Optimus S. Being new to Android based phones in this country, LG's support is a bit of an unknown.
