So the stock desire charger works amazing well. It charges my phone super fast (also turns my phone into a nice hand warmer). I have the charger at work and use the computer's USB to charge the phone at home when needed. Well the USB charger is way too slow and I want something faster. I didnt want to pay big bucks for another HTC charger, thinking that any old wall type adapter charger would work.

So I picked up a 5V 1000ma wall charger, the same specs as the HTC charger. Plug it in and thought it would perform the same, but after an hour or so, the phone barely got 15% charge and its not as hot. I noticed when I plugged the phone to the aftermarket wall charger it say the "USB debugging mode" is turned on. That never happened with the HTC wall charger.

Is there a way to make the aftermarket charger charge the same as the HTC charger?

For HTC chargers the two data pins are connected.
So the Desire knows to charge with 1000mA

EDIT:
If you have the HTC car charger,there is a solution.
Use the cable of the car charger with your 5V 1000ma wall charger.
This cable has the connected data pins, too.

Ive thought about that, but didnt check if the aftermarket charger only have the 2 pins or not. Let me go back and see what I can do and see if that makes a difference or not

So I've opened up the power adapter I bought and indeed all 4 pins of the charger is wired. Not able to modify the charger itself, I opted to modify the USB cable itself. Ive snipped off the white and green wire within the USB cable leaving only the red and black wire, and hooked it up to the phone. Phone still sees a USB device being plugged in.

Next step would be hard wiring 2 wires from the charger to the micro usb connector and see if that works

When inserting the micoUSB jack for charging, the Desire checks whether the data pins (green and white wire) are connected or not.
connected = charging AC = 1000mA
not connected = charging USB = 500mA

Thanks Harry, the usb enumeration way too complicated for me.

As much as I dont want to, I guess I have no choice but to buy another HTC charger unless someone could tell me what AC wall charger can charge the phone without it thinking its connected to an USB device.

I've searched the market and came up with something called Locale Power Source Plug-in which helps the phone know when it's connected to the car dock, but I dont think that would help much in my case, and I dont want to pay $10 for the full version of Locale to find out if this works or not.

Anyone got any suggestions or methods how to charge my phone with my aftermarket wall charger without the phone thinking its being charged by a USB device? I really need fast charging. Stock wall charger charges the phone from completely dead to full in under 2 hours. The USB charging takes overnight (8hrs+)

Maybe not the best place to ask, but here goes:

Ok, couple of things:
1 - The supplied cable works fine from the plug pack or USB port.
But it was annoying if I wanted to charge the phone. If I plug it in the USB port, the PC turns on. So I have to move the cable to the supplied charger and charge.
I bought another cable. It was shorter. Because of this, I used it for the computer connection. Alas this didn't work. For some reason, the phone would charge, but there was no data path.
What I hade to do was use the supplied cable for the PC, and the bought one for the power supply.

Now, reading the post, begs the next question:
2 - I try to cycle the battery as much as possible before recharging.
But sometimes when it is 17% remaining, and I plug it in to the mains charger, and leave it overnight, when I get up, it is showing GREEN on the power led, but it is sometimes only 97%-ish charged. Sometimes 100%.

The battery still gives me good times, but I am just wondering what is going on with that.

What do you mean by that? Your computer turns on when you plug your phone into the computer?

Did check the settings in the phone? You can set it so that the phone does a different task when you plug it into the computer. Whether it be charge only, USB drive, debugging mode or tether.

This happens to my phone all the time. I think the charger stops charging when it reaches 100% and the phone uses the battery power instead of the chargers. Then when it drops to a certain level, it will charge the battery again, but still indicate green LED light

It works. If I use the other cable it goes through all the same things, but I can't access the net when I am using the newer cable.

3 - thanks. It kind of makes sence, as I don't turn the phone off unless I really need to.

As far as I know, the internet share option is basically sharing the phone's data connection with your computer, not the other way around. Could be just so happens when you plug your phone with the new USB, you don't have data connection on the phone.

No the phone is on the net and I can surf. But I plug the phone in to the puter and can't.

Swapping the cable it works.

I am "suspicious" the new cable is only for charging.

Can that demage phone or battery ?

Recharges are relatively fast, the battery lasts as it should but sometimes can not unlock the phone - drag down to unlock does not work.

I think I know its not a problem until the voltage is 5V and amperage can vary. Maybe I am wrong about it ?

You are right. There are no danger with the Nokia charger.
Nokia has the same coding in its charger as HTC.
