I dont understand, I go around these forums and I see a bunch of people talking about the problems they have with this phone. As I'm typing this on my captivate, I've had absolutely no problems at all. The gps, and the shutdowns and everything. I got mine 2 weeks after this phone was released and its been perfect. I got it from best buy as well. So, idk. Just a rant lol.

What's to understand? The problems aren't 100%. Some people are lucky and don't experience them. But a large number do. The lucky few don't invalidate the bad experiences of the others.

Between my girlfriend and I we are on our 5th and 6th captivate. Its the worst phone ive ever owned. In this most recent round of new phone upgrades between me and my friends I got the lemon. Friends got droid 2 / X and evo and have no problems like me. the first 4 captivates reset daily, especially more frequent shortly after unplugging in the morning. I cant speak about my girlfriends phone but all of mine had crap gps ( i could be on the top of a 5 story parking garage (hello sky) and never get a lock, drive for 15 mins never get a lock. then open/ close navigate and lock instantly, very fussy thing. My most recent problem is no matter what apps i install on the thing "Android OS" goes bananas and clocks up cpu time ruining battery life. I systematically uninstalled every single app and kept watching "Android OS" increase and increase till my phone was totally stock and it didnt stop.

Be happy your phone is normal. Im stuck with this lemon for 2 years.

See THATS what i dont understand. How in the hell can a company mass produce phones, and someone gets 4 shitty ones but me and 2 of my friends get the ones with no problems. Doesnt make sense. I was worried about this phone when i first got it because honestly, i dont like samsung products, but its been perfect. Idk. Wierd.

I highly highly doubt that there are a "few lucky ones" that get good phones and a large number that get shitty. If that were the case then wouldnt they have a recall? They wouldnt sell at the least. It just bothers be that so many people get on here and complain about the phone because my phones runs perfect and i convinced two of my friends to buy one and thiers do too. Also, if you get 3 different ones, why not choose another phone next time around? I know at best buy you can do that.

I have to admit, if my captivate worked the way it is now when I first got it I'd probably be one of these confused folk. I definitely have the same phone after sending it to Samsung(there's scratches on the bezel from where I dropped it) but it works FLAWLESSLY now. The ONLY time I've had the phone give me a problem since getting it back is when turning on/off gps. Twice (out of perhaps 20 times) using the switch widget it became unresponsive for a solid 2 minutes.

I used to be embarrassed by my phone because it'd never do what I wanted it to. Now it works flawlessly. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for the best phone they could on at&t.

Based on the posts in the forum, and personal experience, I don't think "large number" is an exageration. My phone has been wonderful, except for GPS. I have tried everything that has been suggested, but after my first week, I have never been able to get consistent locks, let alone quick locks. I do not think it is due to flashing different ROMs, although I have been doing that. I didn't have GPS after the first week, when I was completely stock. I loaded the GPSFix app, ran it in the middle of a parking lot under a clear, sunny sky, without my case, and it failed and told me to retry in an open area. Do some phones work? I would say yes, based on other posts. Does mine? Yes, but not for GPS. Is it a Samsung problem? I don't know. Probably, although my last phone (an ancient Blackjack II) had great GPS. In any case, I am a statistician by trade, and while I can't quantify the number of "good" vs "bad" phones, I have no doubt that "large number" is accurate.

OK - Sanity Check, my friends -:)

  1. By August, just 45 days worth of shipping, 1 _million_ Galaxy S type phones had been shipped in the US alone.
  2. If just 1% of those have problems - that 10,000.
  3. I believe the numbers leave no room for doubt - AndroidForums.com is the number one place for detailed Android and handset help.
  4. So - if people have problems - you'll see them posted here.
  5. You can't draw any meaningful percentage conclusions by just looking at posts here, though - you just can't. This is a help site - not a manufacturer site or a consumer survey site.

Add to that - Phandroid.com (the news-outlet side of our forums) reported - per Samsung that they admitted to a widespread GPS problem and that Samsung was max attentive to owning up to it and fixing it.

No one can say how phones get bad. If it's a bad batch, then that happens. If a good batch had some bad shipping (hidden damage, only shows up as flakey software to the user), then that happens. Design mistakes that only show up when you're shipping millions, that happens.

So - nothing weird if your Captivate has zero problems, nothing weird if your Captivate has issues.

Remember - we're all in this together - if your phone works, help out a buddy with some trouble if you can.

And if anyone gets exacerbated and wants to curse his phone and return it - that's ok. That's a _consumer right_.

When someone makes the perfect phone, I'll be the first one to buy it.

Until then, we're all consumers at the end of a complex supply chain, with cutting-edge, super-cool Android stuff running on INSANELY cool hardware.

While pundits like to sell mindshare and fragment us into fans, I'd like to offer my opinion - the Captivate (or any Galaxy-class), the Evo, the Droid X are what I would call super-phones, not smart phones. I work in the semiconductor industry and can promise you that what's going on under the hold is a minor miracle on these sets.

And Android is making it all possible.

The Captivate is running hardware and software processes that were unheard of on desktops just a decade ago. In a handheld device. And - it even makes phone calls.

With complexity comes some problems.

Kindly continue to use this thread for the positive exchange of these ideas - just as you all have so far.

None of us has a monopoly on the truth, we're all in this together - and I'm pulling for you.

Thanks for letting me (positively) rant in your forum, and cheers!

thanks for the reply but the app doesn't help me.

No prob - that post talked about a setting I don't have on my phone, so I couldn't tell if it was tied to the app or your Captivate settings.

Wish I could be more helpful - I'd like to see this problem solved for all Sammy users - it's holding up my wife green-lighting her upgrade to a new phone!

EXACTLY. 10,000 out of 1,000,000 is not a big number obviously. The 10,000 just must be on this forum

My gps sucks for sure. It absolutely sucks. It won't even track me when I'm moving. My wife's I4 is sitting next to it showing us move right along but my gps is sitting there with a big stupid 2200m accuracy range. I use my gps a lot, or at least I used too...

Thats so strange tho i think.
I guess i got super lucky because my gps has always worked perfectly.

I got this thing at radioshack on black fri for free.....then I heard it could be refurbished.....I have only experienced one problem which was the phone turning itself twice, but it was in my pocket both times....I was weary of my purchase after seeing so much negativity on this forum....at this point I am happy with my Captivate. ......if you happen to regret your decision just think of how advanced these cell phones really are. We're lucky to have them and I don't think any one is better then another....this is my first however so we'll see....y'all gotta be satisfied with something, don't just look for things to complain about blah blah blah I'm done

Well, you have to remember that theres not THAT many of these phones that are bad out of the box. But alot of people who get bad ones come to these forums to see if theres a fix, so thats why theres alot of complaints on here

Only 10,000 bad out of a million? I guess I have bad luck. I'm on number three which I picked up yesterday. One and Two started fine, then the random shutdowns started. Up to 7 or 8 times a day. Completely unreliable. Phone number three so far has not started the shutdowns ( but my first two were good for a few days before the shutdowns started). However, tonight when I checked for updates, it failed to communicate with the server. I tried the fix located in this forum several times, still not working... I'm having a tough time not considering this purchase a huge mistake. At least Wal-Mart lets me keep exchanging them. I am concerned they will soon run out...

Craptivate indeed...:(

If your on your third one, wont they let you get a different device? Like an aria or iphone or something.

If you phone turned itself off on it's own its broken
, it will only get worse. I'd return it while you still can.

Yes, they will. Unfortunately, the Wal-Mart doesn't have the greatest selection of models. They have the Microsoft phone, but I just can't get past how plastic it feels. I want an Android phone and the only other choice is the Aria. Awfully small, but may have to do it. I came to these forums before buying and checked them out. I saw the problems, but also all the people saying they had none of them. I know people who have this phone with no problems. If I keep exchanging when the problems happen, I gotta eventually get a good one... Right?...

Try telling those 10,000 that their problems are inconsequential and unimportant by raw numbers. Statistics are great so long as you are in a comfortable part of the bell curve...

Speaking only for my part - that was not my point.

I saw a great movie once for some required ES&H thing, maybe 15 or 20 years ago. Engineers like to brag about hitting 5 nines - 99.999% good to go. Using cars on the road, crashing locomotives, house floods, airplanes and etc - high consequence stuff - and how many of these things are in use - it asked the simple questions - how much quality do YOU think your project requires and did you consider consequences when you came up with your numbers?

And an IBM Fellow (very prestigious title, very few of those cats around) once lectured that quality is a binary - you have it or you don't and there is no percentage or fractional number where quality is concerned.

My only points were that going by forum posts on the internet alone, you can't tell if a product is a dog or simply has some issues at a low percentage rate, and that we're all in this together to help one another.

I also mentioned, Samsung has already admitted that they have a GPS problem and they pledged in a press statement to fix it. On that problem alone, however, they didn't say if it's 1% or 99% of users with the problem - just that they know it's real and they're not going to sweep it under the carpet.

Hope that clarifies, thought I should even though your remark didn't address me directly.

Only 10,000 bad out of a million?

And also - the 1 million sold was back in the beginning of August and is a real number - the 10,000 I made up to just illustrate my point: when a buddy has a problem that another doesn't, it's the phone, not the buddy.

Until they fix the problems, your choices are to either hang in there and hopefully get some help in this forum that you won't get from the vendor - or exercise your consumer _rights_.

Multiple phone replacements mean either really bad luck or a real quality problem. I don't work for Samsung, so I can't say which it is.

All I can say is that on the subject of suffering lemon behavior with cell phones, I totally empathize - not sympathize - empathize. Been in those shoes, know how it sucks.

Whichever way it comes down for you, a lot of us are pulling for you.

Cheers!
