Support for both AMOLED & SLCD owners!
With the release of Unrevoked 3.31, DINC owners are now able to obtain root and S-OFF with the Nov OTA and it also supports recoveries for both AMOLED and SLCD users!

I have put together an extensive guide on how to get root for both AMOLED & SLCD users! Rooting is now even easier than ever.

The guide is available at http://jonsuh.com/2010/11/root-your-droid-incredible-how-to/

FAQ
Blank Recovery Screen Issue
For those of you coming across the issue of the blank/black recovery screen:

  1. Do NOT boot straight into recovery with Volume Up+Power.
  2. Boot into HBOOT FIRST with Volume Down+Power.
  3. Then select RECOVERY from the HBOOT menu.

I rooted before the OTA and the OTA will not install
  1. Read my article on how to Unroot your Droid Incredible at http://jonsuh.com/2011/01/unroot-your-droid-incredible/
  2. Then read my article on how to root.

Very nice and thorough guide jsuh, most likely some steps in there you could remove (don't think there is any need to go all the way back to 2.1, could just flash the previous rootable version of froyo, and the Unrevoked3.21 tool has the S-off ability built in, no need for "unrevoked forever").

But, anyway the Unrevoked team is most likely only a few days away from gaining root on the new OTA( http://twitter.com/unrevoked ), so if anyone feels the least bit uncomfortable doing this, definitely wait, not worth bricking or causing yourself a bunch of headaches over.

Yeah thanks, I tried to collaborate the information of 3-4 different posts and sources into one and I overlooked that Unrevoked 3 already gives S-OFF.

I waited a week before I got impatient and wanted to root myself, haha. Got a replacement and not having root was frustrating me. I didn't even want a custom ROM, just simply root.

IDK WTH I'm doing wrong. I've followed your and several other guides to root.

I have an SLCD with NOV OTA
I have unrEVOked 3.22
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04
I've followed your guide to the letter
I'm running unrevoked as SU from terminal
I've loaded the custom recovery.img (for some reason, unrevoked won't push the file to the phone, so I've manually placed it on the root of the SD card that's formatted properly)
When unrevoked reboots the phone it goes into HBOOT just fine(still reads S-ON at this point, not sure if it should, but I think so) but when it searches for recovery.img (I've also tried it with the file named PB31IMG.img) I get the same errors in HBOOT that I was getting before I knew the NOV OTA broke 3.21. Also at this point, in my terminal window I'm getting error:

Code:
ERROR: n = -1, errno = 19 (No such device)

After HBOOT doesn't find the recovery.img it continues like it's booting normally and unrevoked changes to "running root". As the phone is continuing to boot, unrevoked changes to "waiting for root" where it hangs and my terminal window pops up the exact same error again. Just like it did on 3.21.

I can also open a terminal window and run adb devices and it recognizes the device and gives an expected value in return.

Am I just the dumbest person alive or did I miss something?

TIA for any help.

Ryan

Forget about loading the custom recovery to your phone, you can flash it after you get root.just let unrevoked load the default one. Then flash the file from http://dougpiston.com after you have root.
