Desire HD movie settings

HEy guys, just a quicky... Has anyone had a chance to start ripping movies onto their Desire HD?

I use Super so am only really interested in settings for that (it's free and i've tried others and all are buggy or don't work right or aren't free)

Doesn't have to be awesome quality, a good mix of quality V size would be nice, will be ripping lots of cartoons and some movies etc, so not sure if i'll need seperate settings for the cartoons?

I use Any Video Converter Free but it's all pretty much the same, no matter which program you use. Basically you need to fit the bitrate to the resolution. For HD movies you'll need at least 6 Mbit/s (DHD records HD videos at around 8 Mbit/s). For NTSC/PAL DVD rip you'll need something around 2 Mbit/s. As for the cartoons, 1 Mbit/s should be enough. Container they use is .3gp and the codec is h.264 so it'd be best if you stick with that when you encode your videos (remember that right codec is more important than the container). And for audio stream, 128kbps MP3 or AAC should be enough.

Make sure to use use Variable bitrate (VBR) while encoding, it will give the best results.

Use Handbrake if you absolutely need to remux. Personally I just drag n drop my DIVX to my SD card and play using Vplayer.

If you are encoding be sure to set the resolution to that of the DHD.

thanks for that! one other question.. whats hould the resolution be set to? or will it automatically resize? i guess i should set the screens resolution or the files will be unnecessarily large

The DHD will allow you to view 720p video files. So as long as the resolution is set to less than 1280

yeh i was worried about that.. when i rip stuff on my n95 i rip 320:240 or something like that.. does anyone know the ratio/screen size on the desire HD?

I don't need stuff to look perfect, 720p is prob overkill for me

Anything under 720p.

Both Format Factory and Handbrake have preset video profiles. When picking the profile, as long as the last number isn't higher than 720, then it will run.

If I recall DVD quality on PAL sets is 720x576.

When it comes to backing up DVDs, because as you know ripping DVDs is illegal you really need to just experiment, until you get the desired resolution, against performance, against size.

yeh, probably should have been more specific... what aspect ratio should i use? as i said 320:240 on my n95 fits it perfectly, below that and the picture doesn't fill the screen... I was under the impression that 720p was just like a pixels per inch measurement, as opposed to an aspect ratio or a set x and y pixels ratio?

That's outstanding work there.

Firstly, I have a 720p 16:9 movie on my DHD at the moment and it works perfectly (of course this movie will be scaled down by the DHD to fit on the actual DHDs screen).

The user wanted to know a good resolution and such. I simply stated that as long as they have several gigs of space, they can easily create 720p movies, with decent sound and these will play perfectly.

Personally, most of my movies are either 480x272 (30 fps), with around 130 kb/s bitrate MP3 audio. However, I've also had good results with 640x360, but of course these will be larger (The 480x272 movies I have are around 600mb each).


Secondly, it depends where you live as to whether backing up or ripping a DVD is illegal. In the UK, this practice is illegal, regardless of what you intend to use it for. However, as this is a forum with worldwide appeal, not everyone has the same laws.

The OP was asking for a good quality/size ratio, I don't wish to get involved in a forum argument, but given his request I don't think he was asking for 720p video on a 4.3" screen:

a) It's overkill, both in size & quality. Therefore does it meet his needs? No.
b) Processing 720p will kill the battery much more rapidly than media ripped to the native resolution.

As for copyright, you're right... it varies wildly, I think common sense overrides most local laws though. Not many courts in this land would try and make a case against you providing you own the original copies - music/video/roms. But sure there's some over zealous CPS somewhere

That's all true. However, there are so many different resolutions available on programmes like FormatFactory and Handbrake that I was merely saying that anything below 720p will work and that experimentation is in order.

Like I said, I tend to stick to 480x272, but I do have a 720p movie on my phone and although large I've not noticed a significant difference in battery performance.


My original statement on copyright was originally intended to simply cover my own arse People are free to rip what ever movies they like, as long as they realise that the process in some countries is illegal. The last thing I want is this forums owner subject to a law suit, because a user was told they could freely rip movies and told the cps that the information came from here.
