Evo or Epic, upgrading from a Hero

Hi all:
I have a current HTC Hero and while I really like the phone, I am sick of the random turning off, dumping my contact list and mostly how the voicemail app starts talking in the middle of my phone calls. I also seem to hang up on people with my ear or something so time to move on. Does the Evo have that same stupid voicemail app that you can't get rid of? That would steer me towards the Epic if it doesn't. Just wondering for those who have either, why you picked one over the other. Thanks.

I have both in the household an both are excellent phones with their own quirks. Rather then trying to explain what I like/dislike about them, I will suggest you head to Sprint and play with them and see what you think about them. FWIW, my wife prefers the Evo while I prefer the Epic.

I really dont think i would be unhappy with either phone. IMO, HTC seems to be one of the better/best manufacturers right now. They also seem to get updates out more timely than others, specifically compared to samsung. After all the big problems Ive heard about from people with moments/insticts, I would be a little apprehensive about the $250 cost of the epic (although I am fully aware that both the moment and instinct are both "middle of the line" phones compared to the epic/galaxy s line). For me sense vs touchwiz isnt really an issue, as I am very content with Launcherpro plus

Something else thats worth looking at is the developer support for each phone. not sure if you are into rooting or custom roms, but the developer following for the evo is huge. obviously its been out longer and thats likely the reason, but it can always help. I am currently also a hero user and didnt even think about rooting until I saw that developers had ported froyo to the hero, something that sprint/htc seem to have no intentions of doing. this could be something to look into down the road when the next os version comes if your new phone doesnt get it

Other than that, id say your best bet is to go play with both and see what you like the best. Its worth taking a peek at both fora to see what people are saying about both. obviously both phones have flaws; its worth seeing what people are saying about them to see if it looks like the flaws will affect your decision. its also worth taking a peek at some reliable online reviews from places like cnet or any other blog you like

im not really sure what you mean by the annoying vm app? sprint visual voicemail? Im pretty sure all sprint smartphones come with it. Ive been using google voice as my voicemail for quite some time so i really cant comment on that, but when i had the sprint app, i never had the issue you are stating. Its really worth taking a look at. you can check your vm from your email inbox on your computer. It also "tries" to transcribe it, so you can read the vm as text if you cant listen to it. Something to look at... go into the settings and make sure the screen times out when you are on a call. you might have it set so the screen stays on, meaning your ear can easily start pressing buttons while on a call.

I have an Evo and haven't had any of the problems you have on the Hero. I can honestly say that I wouldn't want any other phone even if I got one for free and no strings attached.

I went from the Hero to the EVO and never looked back. The EVO looks *HUGE* at first glance, but the size is quick to get used to, and now when I do something on my boyfriend's Hero or my stepdad's Moment, they feel so tiny, I fumble with the screen. And I have skinny fingers!!

As for the voicemail app, I set up Google Voice, and my voicemail comes through that. The Sprint voicemail stuff is still on the phone, but never pops up because any call I don't answer gets routed to GV, and conditional call forwarding (no answer or busy signal) is free, so no charges (unconditional call forwarding is $0.20/min unless you're on the Unlimited Min Simply Everything $99.99/month plan). Plus you can listen to them from your computer, and the text message transcripts are hilarious sometimes.

If you're planning on rooting, it was quick and painless on the EVO, using unrEVOked. I haven't made much use of the 4G or tethering, so I can't say how that goes on the EVO, but overall I love this phone. Just remember the extra chargers and/or extra / extended battery!!

I agree about the size, it's so nice compared to every other phone I've had/played with.

You don't need extra chargers or batteries if you follow a few simple tips, trust me. They're all over this forum and the internet.

Ooh. Thanks. I will go and check that. I am excited to get a new phone. If I can eliminate the stupid voicemail thing (I did go into Sprint and ask if that app could be removed and they said no) then I would probably lean towards the evo. I am used to HTC and other than some annoying glitches like dropping contacts (solved with gmail backup) I like them.
Thanks again.

If you are not a rooter, this is the number one reason to go with the EVO IMO. That said, even if you are a rooter, you may still want to go with the EVO (ok so I am a little biased ;) )

Unfortunately, that doesn't work when you're recording a marching band performance at a football game (GO HOKIES!!! :) ), taking tons of pics before and after the game, upload said pics to Facebook or send them to all the FSU fans you know to rub it in their faces that you are at the game and they aren't, and calling / texting constantly to meet up with everyone scattered around the stadium.

Plus I can't charge my phone at work (they forbid any "non work related" power usage, they won't even let us put up Christmas lights for our decorating contests!), so having a fresh battery to pop in makes me more comfortable. I could get an extended battery and not have to worry, but I like my bright neon pink case cover. :D

Wow, I had never heard of a place being so strict as to not allow you to charge a cell phone. Are they super strict about everything?

Yup, they actually have people that make rounds through the center checking for "contraband", if you have your cell phone even *VISIBLE* you get in trouble, same thing with a piece of paper, a pen / pencil, food, any drink in a "non spillproof container". Those last 2 are the building owner's rules, along with the no power usage for non work related stuff ... I can kinda see their point, they *ARE* paying the power bill, but it's definitely stricter than anywhere else I've worked. The phones and pen / paper thing are to comply with regulations regarding being able to accept credit cards for payment. They figure if you've got your cell phone out, you're secretly taking pictures of the computer screen to steal info, or sending text messages to your buddies with credit card numbers, or if you have paper you're writing that stuff down.

Thanks for your help. I did download the screen lock on the hero and that is helping. I am so annoyed at sprint though. AS a "VIP" (LOL) status, I can upgrade with the full discount every 12 months. Great, right? Except they put it on my SON's phone. I asked why that phone and not the primary line and couldn't get an answer. Called to change it...no problem, except it would take a "few days" to show up on my account. I think, no big deal. Then I call today since it still isn't showing up and it won't be on there until the 13th. I called on the 1st. A bit more than a few days. That even doesn't but me too much except my hot spot broke today and I took it in to get fixed. Since I was there anyway, I thought I would ask if they could call and get it approved to do the deal now (one business day early) instead of Monday. The guy didn't even try. Just a quick 'nope'. Of course, here it was 2 weeks before Christmas and not a sole in the store. Gee, do you think it would behoove either Sprint to empower their salespeople or hire salespeople who want to sell things?
Now I have to make another trip in on Monday. Grr. I did get to play with both phones though and definitely like the Evo better. It's huge though which will take some getting used to. I didn't realize the Epic was pretty much as big.
Thanks for all of your help.
