Desire vs desire HD

Dear all,

I apologise in advance if this question has already been asked. I had a look and searched the forum but no post could be found.

I am new to smartphones and I am superkeen in android (although I haven't discarded iphone yet). Three network offers the desire and desire hd, which I absolutely love! (both of them)
I "guess" (never owned one...) I would use a smartphone for internet, skype, reading PDF files (not an actual book but e.g. dosage of a drug or interactions etc) and emails.

I was wondering whether someone who has owned both could suggest which I should buy.

Concerns:
- desire has already been around for months, would it be worth waiting for new phones?
- I LOVE the HD but, is it too big to carry around, especially during hopsital shifts and keep it in my scrubs' pocket.
- I am not so keen on the design of the desire but the size is great!
- desire doesn't have htc sense

Although I haven't had the HD I would like to point out that the Desire does have Sense, just not the new version, yet.

Also, I would recommend a case for protection, and the annoying shape is pretty much fixed by that.

I have both phones.
With the DHD there is no worry about memory space for apps (0.14GB vs over 1GB )

Size and weight of the DHD is no problem for me.

prefer the desire over the HD for size etc. it does niggle me slightly that ive got older technology but in practical terms it doesnt make much difference and i feel the desire has more power than it needs in most cases anyway.
the only issue with desire is its memory limitations, this can be circumvented but by default the desire HD has plenty more room

Thats right Desire is getting older and older as DHD is too big, I recommend to get Desire Z. I bought it for my mom, played around with it and I love it, it's better then original Desire, I actually going to get one for my sister in cristmas as they are so awesome!

It runs a newer more efficient CPU which counters the differences in screen size.

Housemate has the HD and it is very nice but a little bigger than I would like. Plus we both agree my AMOLED looks a lot better when watching videos.
Both of our phones last a day with plenty of playing around.

Given the choice now I wouldn't want to buy a phone with limited internal memory as my Desire has. It might suit some people but it can be a pain if you like to install LOTS of apps

- Hummingbird processor (Galaxy S processor = blazingly fast)
- 4" super AMOLED screen (better in day/sunlight)
- Dual cameras
- Gingerbread installed

A lot of the sense features can be found in other apps anyway, for example, launcher pro has a similar widget to friendstream.

If not, just measure up whether the extra hardware features on the DHD are worth it for you. If you decide to go down the road of rooting your phone you can install Desire HD roms on the Desire anyway so the software features will be available to you, you just can't get the hardware without forking out extra cash!

Desire HD is 4.3 inches, right? Then it might just be better to do as matttye says: get a Nexus S. Or even a Galaxy S for that matter. I believe they just might be the only two phones out there that can compete with the Desire HD.

i wouldnt touch any device made from samsung
their dev team is bad (just look at their sources)
the devices are cheaply made
I have an old galaxy that my wife now uses, this was enough to put me off samsung for life
I guarantee you this will be the 1st and last time google use samsung for a flagship android

^^^^^ I agree. I had a terrible time with the Omnia, really hopeless OS and no web support/forums. They look 'orrible too

A friend of mine has the Galaxy; it's a great looking phone and its screen looks better than my Desire. The only observation I had was that it seemed a bit slow to respond, even with 2.2; tap an icon and it takes a second before it acts on the selection.

The Nexus S looks good, but currently "naked" Android looks a bit dull, give me Sense any time.

A little off-topic, but has anyone heard word of a true successor to the Desire? I mean the Z is more of a spin-off, and the HD is essentially the same device but with a bigger screen, more RAM, and a better camera. The HD would be too big for my liking anyway, I can't see myself using a phone much bigger than the standard Desire.

Had a play with my friend's Desire HD. I quite like it, and if I my contract was up for renewal, then I'd definitely get it. I like how the battery is in it's own compartment, and the storage and sim card are in a compartment too. I also like the touch sensitive buttons on it. The touch screen itself I thought was just as good and responsive as the Desire as well.

But I do prefer the size of the Desire. It fits so much more easily in to the hand, and easier to use. Certain things on the HD are quite awkward to do with one hand having to stretch your thumb or something.

It doesn't look cheaply made at all? Looks quite sexy for a phone actually

Don't forget that Google have had a hand in this.. I'm sure they've got standards they would expect Samsung to uphold after the Nexus One failed to take off.

It's got good reviews so far anyway, but I'll keep my verdict til I've had a play with it myself!
