I have a friend who has a Sprint HTC Hero and she cannot remember the password she signed into with it. Basically, she is unable to recover the password at all. My question is can she just create a new GMail account and sync her handset with that? Additionally, the contacts she has stored in her old GMail account, could they stay on the handset and then be synced to the new GMail account?

If anyone has experience with this, I would really appreciate any help. Thanks, in advance.

First she can either have her password reset, if she does not have an alternative email, then they will give her a process to follow, on her handset she can save her contacts to a CSV file and restore like that. AOSP allows you to go to your contacts and hit menu which allows to import/export

FYI: where the heck you been since you have rooted, we have posted replies to your rooted thread and we have not seen you or heard from you since, LOL :D

Yeah, I told her about the reset process but since she never logged into her GMail even once on the computer and only used it with her handset, it had questions that she could not answer. So, if I do not use the CSV method, I assume she cannot just dump her old GMail account, create a new one, and hope the contacts from the first one will stay on her handset, as she signs into the new GMail account to sync up?

Sorry, I have been extremely busy at work the last couple days. I will definitely be in tomorrow evening to chat with you guys about my rooting experience. I have not moved forward at all since I did the actual rooting, so it will be right where we left off. I appreciate all your help. Thanks. :)

Not without accessing her Old Gmail account, simple if she has access to her phone and her contacts are in there then tell her to back them up, it will create a CSV file on her SD card and then she can create a new Gmail account and then import those contacts over ;)

Haha, ironically, I came to that same conclusion through research online, but the answer was here all along. I do wonder, though, how will this affect her installed apps, since they will be attached to the old GMail account?

Would clearing the data in the Google Apps in Application Manager fix that? I guess I would have to just redownload the apps again?

Downloading the apps again would be the prudent thing to do, but again there is a way for her to get access to that account, I am not sure why you are not pursuing that option any further ?? I know you mentioned she does not remember some of the security questions, she can still email Google and I am sure they can distinguish she is who she says she is, she won't be the first or the last to forget some answer to questions responded to, LOL :D:D:D:D:D

Yeah, she just seemed really reluctant to try. It is not from my lack of trying to get her to try that, believe me. ;)

I will see if I can cajole her into it. If not, at least I have a backup plan. :)

Well, to the close the loop on this story and thread, I did manage to export her contacts to her handset's microSD card and import them back. That worked perfectly. :)

However, I ended up having to factory reset her handset because I could not make it prompt me to sign back into her new GMail account. I deleted data on a bunch of Google related things in the Applications Manager, but it would not prompt. It was not a big deal though as I was able to get her handset back to the way it was in under half an hour. I did not even tell her that I had to factory reset it. ;)
