Still 1.5 - want to use 1 click root

I've read all the rooting stuff going back to January when I first bought the Hero. I've stayed at 1.5 all this time but ready to take the plunge. But I am thorughly confused even more since all the firmware updates and such.

I really, really prefer to do a one click method like Z4root, unrevoked or universal 1 using the phone to download the files (not a seperate computer). I tried to root using unrevoked but recieved an error - 'cannot be installed on you phone'. Maybe because i'm still on 1.5?

I'm totally in the dark now as to what version of firmware needs to be on the phone to get one of these methods to work. Can I just do an OTA Sprint update and then use one of these one click methods...or does the firmware then need to be rolled back to a previous version? See, I'm totally confused.

I'm sure you are all blue in the face explaing rooting again and again...but staying on 1.5 AND wanting to do a one click seems to have me puzzled...so thanks very much in advance!

See this thread about rooting when running Android 1.5: http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/231279-trouble-rooting-hero.html .

I think you will have to install the Android 2.1 RUU first before using a one-click method, though I am not 100% sure about that. It is not an OTA update unfortunately, so you will have to download the update mentioned in that thread, along with the HTC Sync software, and connect your Sprint HTC Hero to your computer.

That is correct, upgrade RUU to 2.1 ***. 5 build, then you can use the one click root
