Using YouMail AND Google Voice for Voicemail? Is It Possible?

Hey y'all, how y'all doin'? I'm writing in this general forum because this is an Android question rather than an EVO question. So for years I've used YouMail for my voicemail and have been quite happy with it. However, having been informed of an impending layoff, I created a Google Voice number for job-hunting and work-related phone calls, so I could keep my personal number private (don't ask, it works in my head).

Anyway, I noticed that, since installing the GV app on my phone, that now ALL voicemail from both my Sprint and GV numbers goes to Google Voice for voicemail.

My question is...is there any way to use YouMail for my personal voicemail coming into my Sprint number and Google Voice for my work-related voicemail coming into my GV number?

If not, I'll likely stick with Google Voice, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask. Thanks for your time.

Yes, you can use both - and we have lots of people doing that.

Just point your GV e-mail address to TN@my.youmail.com, where TN is your YouMail account number. All GV voicemails will be captured and sent to YouMail, as if they were left directly by calling the YM number.

You lose the smart greeting on your GV number, but you get the rest of the YouMail features.

Brian, you asked what I have been trying to figure out. I want to be able to have YouMail "pickup" all GV calls. Haven't figured out how to do it.

I want all calls going to my Sprint number to be answered by YouMail.

Yes.

I do just that, but its on my Blackberry. This is how I set it up on it and maybe it will translate over to how to do it on Android.

Remove youmail and GV. Install the Youmail app and sync that to your voicemail with that special number they have you dial. Install GV and log in to your GV account. Click on the link that says "activate GV voicemail on this phone."

After that, I have my work calls (GV) going to GV voicemail and my private calls (YM) going to YM voicemail. I have different messages on each and I haven't had any issues with one crossing over into the other. Like I said this is a Blackberry, but it should work the same as its not the phone routing the messages.

I believe that would work on Android for OP. That is how my device is currently set up (except that I don't have the Youmail app installed).

Yup. Just disable conditional call forwarding to GV. It's what you set up when you clicked on the "Actviate GV voicemail on this phone" and followed the instructions. The instructions for enabling and disabling conditional call forwarding can vary by carrier. If you go to your Voice Settings on the full GV site the activate link should be replaced by a deactivate link. That will prevent GV VM from handling calls directly to your cell number and GV VM should only handle calls to your GV number (and any other phone lines that you might have set up for GV VM).

There's no need to uninstall/reinstall the GV app. You will need to set up YM VM for calls to your cell number though. I have no idea how to do that as I don't use YM but I suspect it also involves enabling conditional call forwarding -- just to YM instead of GV. Otherwise calls will just roll to Sprint's VM.

You do have to be very specific with questions like this as not everyone's setup is identical.

Yes, makes total sense. The key is to have the call forwarding on your Sprint phone go to YouMail. That seems requires entering the following code in your handset. If you have the YM app on your phone, look under help, and you'll see "activate YouMail" - just click it and you're good to go.

(If you want, you can have GV answer the GV number and forward the resulting voicemails to YM - that was the answer to the question below.)

I had this setup, and it was working great until the beginning of this week. Now, all of my missed calls go to Youmail, including calls that come into my GV account. I'm not sure what changed. It was either a functionality change, or a setting got lost when I was flashing a ROM update.

Anyway, I have tried logging in and out of GV, uninstally/disabling YM and reinstalling and re-enabling. I have logged into different GV accounts. I have enabled and disabled integration with GV through the web interface. Nothing seems to fix my problem.

Any ideas?


EDIT: Okay, in playing with this some more, it seems that any call that I push to voicemail goes to my Youmail account. But, if I let a call that's coming to GV ring through completely without sending it to voicemail, it ends up in my GV voicemail. I suppose this might have always been the way it has worked, but I don't seem to remember that when testing in the past.

Also, this still is something I would like to avoid. If I'm in a meeting with someone or on another line and want to push a call to voicemail, I want it to go to my GV voicemail if it's a work call. So I would still like some guidance on this.
