2.3 GingerBread for Captivate[discussion]

@ northernale1

>>> got a live person

You sure? The next time you call, ask the representative what day of the week it is. The reply will either be: "That's the first I've heard of this problem" or "Have you tried a factory reset?" or "I have no idea about an update. Keep checking the Web site."

>>> she said she had no idea about update if or when and for me to keep checking the website

See!!!

>>> was on with a manager and i was informed that Rogers and Bell customers will recieve update middle of december

Nothing new. Last month, on its Facebook page, Samsung confirmed that the Android 2.2 update will be delivered to the Bell Vibrant and Rogers Captivate in mid-December.

>>> then i questioned about being 2 FWs behind and future updates past 2.2 , the reply was there is no formal announcement as of yet,,

Script.

>>> but after all carriers have 2.2 out,, there is a announcement prepared

Announcement: "All carriers have 2.2 out."

>>> and also said that this phone is not a short term project

Duh!

>>> so i found samsung canada to be very forth comming and helpful

Hmmm. My expectations are a tad higher.

OT for a sec, but I really do like Canadians. I've found them - for the most part - to be gentle souls. Whenever I've had the opportunity to interact with Canadians I've found them to be professional and courteous. Good eggs.

Now back to our regularly-scheduled helping hand, periodically intermingled with frivolous bickering and pure nonsense.

first post ;]. Samsung has made it super easy to install 2.2 on captivate device if your that worried about it just install it yourself. You'll get the wireless ap setting too so you can wifi tether other devices (up to 5) via ad hoc. They even have a one click root for 2.2 captivate already out as well. I can't wait to flash to 2.3. btw first time rooting a device was yesterday i bricked 3 times but managed to easily recover each time i heard if you had a weird device it can get perma bricked check out all the info on this site before attempting happy days ;] :D

I have been dwelling on this and I have a strange feeling that since our devices and the nexus S are so similar that we will be able to flash the vanilla 2.3 rom within a few days of release o_o
Partly because samsung sucks and google probably did all the work, so they probably fixed all the problems and just make it work on the hardware

And good luck finding a custom rom that works half way decent. Yeah, good luck with that. Great rom, too bad my bluetooth is flaky, my wifi works only half the time and I get an SOD every day.

I've been running Cognition 2.1 beta release 5 since it came out in early Oct. Its been rock solid for me for a couple of months now. The Wifi has always worked great when I couldn't even connect to my work wifi before I upgraded due to Eclair bugs. My bluetooth works great as well, I can even start a phone call with my headset button using Vlingo. The GPS works about the same as it did before the update.

I haven't bothered to upgrade further because I've been busy and I haven't needed to. My phone with Cognition is just plain better and more stable than it was with stock Eclair.

It works for everyone I've talked to, and the people on the IRC are extremely helpful with any problems you have for the Cognition ROM. I have it currently and I have experienced zero problems with it, it just feels like I have Froyo and there doesn't seem to be a reason to not upgrade to this version and take a few minutes so that we can all have Froyo =D

I hope this is the case, but I feel it won't be that simple.
