CAUTION - Mandatory install of a new voicemail application

This afternoon all is well with my Hero and in the Notification box comes a little reel to reel notice. I scroll it down and it it says "A mandatory update is not available" for voice mail. When you click it the download automatically starts and you get a new voice mail application on your phone advertising a free one month voice mail to text service. Before I could cancel it, it was done. So I poke through it to see what I have now and it's a big advertising push from Sprint giving you a 30 day free trial and after that you have to cancel it if you don't want it. Well I don't want it NOW! Plus there is an advertising banner NOW on your voice mail screen that you CAN NOT get rid of! I spent 40 minutes with Sprint tech support and the bottom line was reset my phone and loose everything and rebuild the phone from scratch. This is NEVER and option for me. I accidentally pressed the activate button with the tech trying to get rid of this and now my phone will do a day by day 30 day count down. Lucky for me as my phone is rooted and I restored to an earlier version. But still I can't get rid of this icon in the notification area unless I install this download.

Be very careful. If this is what you want then go after it but if you want Sprint putting more junk on your phone then beware.

I don't have a solution for this but just putting the warning out there..........

Yes there is a "Redundant" post to this fact and I wish someone would have posted it sooner. If it's so wrong then someone will take it down. But my main intention is to warn others that don't know about it and want to make an informed decision about it. I am on these forums daily and I never saw a warning or even a notice that it was coming. Now I find out it's been coming for a couple of weeks. So forgive my Redundant post as I am doing a service to the folks that my have not gotten the word!

Okay, after some studying and some of the other comments here I do realize I have choices and now I know what I can do. I for one don't like sprint in my phone. I have fought the battle here he with some FANTASTIC help from you guys on this forum to root my phone for the shear purpose to get rid of the bloatware. I really take offense that I am forced into a marketing scheme with out an opt out button.

Plus thanks to the other gentlemen here that have been offering positive suggestions too. You have read my trials and tribulations with this phone and know exactly where I am coming from...............

Listen, I was not trying to sound coarse when I made my previous post. Please, do not take such offense to it. I was only making note that you had posted it twice. I also totally agree with your irritation that Sprint was pushing that voice to text transcription service on customers with that Sprint Visual Voicemail app update.

Oh, as for no warning, I posted about this two weeks ago so I guess you must have missed it: http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/224044-visual-voicemail-update.html . ;)

NP, Lisa still waiting for the beers :D on another note uninstall the Sprint APK, and give Youmail a shot, I have been using it for over a year now and love it, you can customize personal greetings to each of your contacts or some of your contacts and have a general message for others, you can listen to your messages either from the Youmail app, or from your email on your phone and does not use your airtime minutes. ;)

Well I am pretty upset by this whole deal and you rubbed me the wrong way there. At this stage in my life I really don't need anyone wagging their finger at me like they caught me at something. Okay with that said, I indeed missed you post and the follow ups to it. If YOU would have been a redundant poster I may have caught it. At any rate, don't take it personal. You garnered some good info on your posts and I'm truly sorry I missed it. If I had seen them two weeks ago I wouldn't have been taken so off guard. Plus I wouldn't have thrown away the last two and a half hours playing with the damn thing. So for now I am looking into other voice mail systems and will eventually dump another piece of sprint bloatware off my phone. In the mean time I have had to call customer service and tell them I no way want this service and if I don't call them back on the 8th of January to cancel that I will when I see it on my bill. So I had them log the fact that I did call, that I was pissed off and that I wasn't going to pay for this service. They were very nice about it and noted my comments and I am starting to feel better. After reading the responses to your post of two weeks ago I feel better too as I'm not alone.

Wishing you a wonderful evening.........

Lisa ;)

Okay, I was not trying to "wag my finger" at you, but just was not sure if you realized you had posted it twice. Sorry you interpreted it that way, but I digress and time to move on.

I am glad you read my old post and it helped you. It is too bad you missed it the first time, as this whole episode could have been avoided. I hope your troubles with your Sprint HTC Hero are lessening. I too greatly appreciate the efforts of our fellow forum posters here.

One more small thing on the redundant post. I did cut and paste the body so I was full well knowing what I was doing but I don't think the titles are exactly the same though as I typed it from memory............

On to DonB, yes I owe you some beer but we are on opposite ends of this wonderful country. But if our paths do cross I will certainly get you your fill of the beer of your choice as you got me to root AGAIN! Plus I will be looking into the Youmail app. I do trust your advice and you haven't given me anything to doubt and after that glowing review I may spend some time at work dumping the Sprint voice mail .apk and loading up the Youmail and setting it up. That will take one more piece of sprint off that phone.

And LBPHeretic, I'm really sorry I missed your other post. As I said would have saved me a TON of aggravation with Sprint............

Good deal. I hope the YouMail thing works out for you.

I thought about just switching to Google Voice for my visual voicemail needs too. I might give it a shot.

Okay, I'm a little confused about Youmail and Google Voice Mail. I have looked at them both but I don't understand how they work. There is little to no information on the Youmail webpage on how it works and I was playing with the Google voice mail and it looks like I have a new phone number now???? So how does that work. I'm thinking the Youmail app may work the same. I just want simple voice mail. I have tried this Spring text to voice and it's truly a joke. So right now I don't want the sprint thing on my phone any longer but I need to have an answering machine. So DonB and Andygu, you guys have made great suggestions but how do they work?? I don't want to have to give out another phone number. The problem with google products is there is no manual or support. I guess that same problem exists with the entire android system so I'm back to the forums. Just when I get my phone where I wanted it gets screwed up again.

So lets see if we can work this out. I go into Titanium and I can delete it and then it's gone for ever. So when I do that I don't have any voice mail at all right? Or will I have some sort of rudimentary voice mail where I will have to call my number and enter a code and pick up my voice mail. Do I have this right? How will the phone let me know I have a "rudimentary" voice mail? Or if I delete it will I have no notification that there is voice mail wait for me.....................

Then it appears that Google Voice/Text stuff I have to give out another phone number? I don't understand the advantage of that at all. I know I'm missing something here but I can't figure it out. Then is Youmail like google mail? Come on guys, I need some help here as Sprint has screwed up my phone. And yes their cute visual voice mail works fine except it can't spell and does a terrible job of figuring out what I was saying to it. So we need more info here and I know DonB you like to have this in the forums so we all can learn so here we go......................

No, you do not need a google voice number for the voicemail to work.

Download GV from the market and set it up, then you will have to go to a pc and set up GV from there also. You will have to call a number to activate your voicemail, that's it

Youmail is simple, sign up, then call forward your no answer transfer to the Youmail number and your done, and Sprint does not charge to call forward, then you login to your Youmail account and customize your greeting to your contacts. simple. If I find a set up guide I will post it for you
