Reservations about DX

I have some reservations about purchasing a DX. I had a BB Storm, which i had problems with the phone and screen from day 1. After 4 months and 11 phones i changed to a BB Tour. Tour hasnt been that bad, although applications are limited and the internet is sllooooooooow....

I have heard nothing but good things about the Droid's but im just have my reservations about switching back to a full touch screen and having to worry about problems with the screen and phone.

Can anyone help convince me otherwise? And how have you phones been? Any issues with the screens or internet or anything?

i had the storm1 for a long time. switch switch switch as fast as you can...bb is shite compared to android and the touch screen on the dx is phenomenal...

it'll take you a couple days to get used to trying to press/click the screen but you will get the touch pretty quickly. i love the dx...would never ever think about going back to a crapberry....

Had a BB Storm myself. Although I personally had like zero problems with it other than losing screen sensitivity like 1.5 years out, this Droid X screen is very sensitive and basically nothing to worry about.
It's fast, not laggy to any real extent. It loads apps in like 10 seconds(yeah that fast) and web pages very quickly. Available app memory is basically limitless.
Get it and you will love it!

Between my wife and I- I've played extensively with the BB Tour, BB Storm 1, and DroidX.

It's not even a competition. The DroidX is truly that far ahead of the current BB offerings

I was also a little apprehensive about switching to a complete touch screen phone because of all the problems I had with my enV touch. The screen is perfect; it's intuitive, incredibly responsive, but not too sensitive. And I haven't had a single issue with the screen or stock browser.

Today we had two of our top executives in the office for a Holiday lunch and in a meeting ahead of time they disagreed about the distance between two of our CA offices. So they were trying to map quest the locations to figure out the distances (on their BB Tours). After 20 minutes of them not being able to do it I ran to my office and grabbed my X. Less than a minute later I had the answer, needless to say anything we needed to look up the rest of this meeting was done on my X. They are heading back today and will be looking at getting off BB and moving to Android as well.

I will put this phone up against ANY phone currently on the market.

I'm glad i had such great responses and so quick. I think i had gotten a batch of bad phones. But i went so often to get my storm fixed the girls in the store knew me by name, and by the last time knew my number without asking. The storm was the first 'smartphone' i ever had, was disappointed. The Tour wasnt too bad but internet is soo slooow.

I think i may take a ride to my store and see my girls, and check the phone out. I have used it a couple times not too indepth. See how i like it. and then decide if i upgrade to the X or check out the incredible, heard that wasnt bad either.

This is the very first phone that I've had without a physical keyboard and been okay with it. I tried the BB Storm 1 when it first came out, I wanted to love it, but I absolutely hated it. It took me days to type out simple texts on that hideous keyboard.

The Droid X's keyboard is lightyears ahead of the BB Storm 1 or 2's keyboard. As for comparing it against a good Blackberry physical keyboard (I don't like the Pearl's keyboard at all), well I will say that I could type blazingly fast texts on my Curve all day long. Never missed a key, never mispelled a word... I don't think I will ever find a virtual keyboard that could ever hope to keep up with a really good physical keyboard as I feel a lot of BB's have. But it's as good a virtual keyboard as I've ever played on, including Apple, Blackberry, WinMobile and other Android's that I've played on. So go try it out, it will probably surprise you.

And yes, download speed on this this is crazy fast. Apps take no time at all to load.

There its aHUGE a HUGE difference between a resistive touch screen (blackberry) and a capacitive touch screen (X) once you try the X, you will be in love!

AFAIK, the Blackberry wasn't resistive, it was just that bizarre clicking screen. It was still a capacitive screen.

In any event, though, one of the big make-or-break issues when typing on a touchscreen is the keyboard software. I'm currently a big fan of the Gingerbread keyboard, but there are a dozen different keyboards, and one will suit your fingers/style. You can get the HTC keyboard, which is very nice. You can use Swype. You can use the stock multi-touch, which is pretty good. You can download a keyboard like Ultra Keyboard that will actually let you change the size and spacing of all of the keys, and allow you to modify all aspects of the keyboard.

Lots of options. I find I type faster on a soft keyboard with a good autocorrect mechanism than I do on a phone with a hard keyboard.

While I agree with everything that has been said in these posts... I feel it necessary to point out that you are asking the DROID X CROWD if you should switch to it over a BB.

Me personally, I've never had a BB, but have played with them at family functions, and they've never impressed me like a Droid has... I came to the X from the Eris, and I had my Eris rooted, overclocked, autokilled, rom'd, and flying. I thought it was an awesome phone....

The X is sort of like the Eris... but everything is on 11!! Ridiculously fast, biggest screen ever (ok, maybe not ever, but still), and I can still customize it how I want it...

And once we get around the whole eFuse thing, and get custom kernels, the phone will be unreal!

The one thing I liked about the Sure Press screen on the Storm was the fact you could highlight something by just touching the screen and using the BB button as an option button(or like right click on a computer). Made some things easier to do and easier for software people to layout.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The team that tried was very capable, and they deemed it impossible... or at least not possible before it would be outdated, so they moved on to the next project. As far as I know there is no major effort going on any longer.

Oh I'm sure someone out there will eventually know how to crack it, but by that time we will all probably have moved on to another phone. So we just have to live with phone that can't be FULLY customized, but that by no means suggests that it isn't a worthy device. They've done quite a bit with it considering the limits they're working with.

But any of the devs will tell you they wished they could get rid of Blur all together.

I just got rid of my gen 1 storm 3 days ago. Best move I have ever done, the storm screen was terrible, and this Droid X is smooth as all heck.

Get the X, you won't be disappointed. It's glorious.

something to keep in mind, the first X iI ever tried in a Verizon store was slow as molasses. I thought "WTF, this is the device everyone is raving about"? Then I went to another store and that X was fast and smooth. Keep in mind that the instore devices may have a ton of cr@pware loaded on it, and may be slow as well.

I had a S1 then a S2.
No comparison to the DX.
THe only thing better on the Storm was cut and paste.

I still don't know how to cut and paste on my DX and it does get aggrivating at times. I'm using 'Ultimate Keyboard' and there is an icon for doing it and I still don't know how it's done?

How is the X keyboard compared to the Eris? I have any Eris and still have trouble typing on it after having it for a long time.

I've never used an Eris.

Have you tried any of the third party alternatives on your Eris? The HTC IME is pretty good, and you can create one for free:

That was my stock keyboard before the Gingerbread keyboard was released. Give that a try.

I bought a Storm 1 on release day. It was my first smartphone, and I loved it. The last month or two that I had it, the lagging really picked up and the battery life was awful, but other than that I had no issues.

That being said, the X is ten times the phone. There are a few things that I miss from BB, but the pros easily outweigh the cons (IMHO, of course).

As noted above, you're in a Droid X forum so are likely to get positive responses. You could always go read around the Crackberry forums to get opinions from the other side.
