EVO vs. iPhone 3GS

Yeah, I'm sure you've heard it before....but I have to get this off my chest!

Had iPhone's for 2 years +. Tired of the cost and ATT in general, so when my contract was up, I got an EVO...figured from Sprint, the best of the best? Or close at any rate...

I have to say...there is no comparison. The iPhone is just a better phone, period. Apps rule compared to the plethora of crap on the Droid network, the ease of use, the simple layout...it's just a better phone.

FYI...quantity is not the same as quality. Work on better apps, not trying to catch the Apple store stockpile of them!

The EVO has it's plus'...live screens, like the synch'ing with my new gmail, etc...even though the iPhone does this, the EVO seems a bit better at it.

And guys, it's OK to just ENJOY your phone and not have to hack it and do whatever it is you do with it. You're just upset that Apple tells you what goes on it, in it and from it...not a big deal. It's a PHONE! LOL...use it as such, well, plus more.

There isn't a thing that the iPhone can't do...APPS rule! The apps I've seen so far from droid are horrid!! Really. A few good applications, but the games, unless ported over from iPhone, really blow. I have yet to pay for one...as I can't find good FREE ones, so why bother. iPhone had some great free stuff, and the stuff I paid very little for was rarely disappointing.

And why in gods name can't I pay for ANGRY BIRDS and get it "commercial free"??? I even emailed them...damn! I WANT to pay for it!!!

And the damn phone is so finicky! I may have had an issue once in a blue moon with the iPhone, but overall haven't really had any issues with it at all.

This phone wouldn't dial the other day...had to restart it and then it worked..go figure.

And why the hell can't I delete anything off of it that it 'came with' without having to read a manual and download all sorts of crap to do it!?

When I got this phone I read about all the cool apps to get to make it better, to extend battery life, make it faster, etc...got some stuff and wound up, literally, watching my battery drain before my eyes! LOL....

I deleted everything and just use it as it came, and the battery life is actually not bad, live wallpaper and all.

Speaking of apps, again...can we make the SAME DARN APP over and over and over and over and.....you get my point...sheesh guys, come up with some original stuff, and DROID? Monitor the crap out there a little! Apple has the right idea. Really they do. Too much is NOT good sometimes! And filtering the crap apps from time to time isn't a bad idea at all!

I am sooo tired of Googling EVERY TIME I can't figure something out on this phone, although, I guess once it's Googles system, they want you to hang with 'their' stuff all around!

Never did I have to google something on the iPhone...it just worked and worked well and easily.

So, if someone can help me understand how to make this phone work better, please, feel free. There is soooo much stuff out there to filter through....ugh! One way to do something on the iPhone is sorely missed!!

It's ok to have someone tell you what can and can't be done, really...it's only a phone guys!

I just switched from iPhone to EVO in November. To be honest, I switched because the monthly bill is much chepaer than iPhone's cheapest plan ( I pay $65 total/month including all fees and the 4G in Vegas) vs $95 for the iPhone 4. I would not go back. The 2 phones are close enough in features that I dont see the need. The difference is that the android system gives the user more flexibility than the iPhone. Most iPhone users would not bother thinking about jailbreaking to get it to do things outside of what is available. iPhone is for those people who just wants to use the phone out of the box without much tweaking. Once you read and customize and root the EVO, it is a much more powerful device than iPhone. But for 95% of the users, I think iPhone would be an easier device to use.

Just depends what type of user you are. And no - you do not HAVE to root the EVO to get an extremely useful and flexible phone. I'm not going back to iPhone.

2) It seems like you're not very tech-savvy as you need to "google" everything so the Iphone is probably better for you
3) You're right its just a phone. A smart phone's functions are email, text, phone, and light browsing. What's did you have to look up?

Hi Frustrated Droid Guy aka onefastsi,

Like you, I have had an iPhone for awhile. I was content with my iPhone (3G and then iPhone 4) until I moved and the area I moved to had very spotty AT&T coverage. So I went to Verizon and checked out the droids. Started with a fascinate, then droid incredible and then droid 2. To make a long story shorter, I am now with Sprint and have the Evo 4G. The coverage is amazing that I don't have to use wifi while at home (which I had to do with both AT&T and Verizon) and I don't drop calls (happened with both verizon and AT&T). Sprint is definitely awesome where I live, plus with my 22% discount that I get from my employer, it's a pretty sweet deal compared to the $100ish I was paying for AT&T and verizon. I've had the Evo 4G for almost a week now and so far impressed with both the phone and sprint.

You mention that the iPhone (more specifically 3GS) isn't comparable to other phones and that's fine, it's the only phone that runs iOS. But, I can tell you right now, the iPhone 4 is far superior to your 3GS and I'm way more happier with my Evo 4G than any iPhone I've used. Build quality, overall layout of the phone buttons and the kickstand is extremely useful. This is by far my favorite android device out there. I hope that htc/sprint does what apple does and continues to build on the "evo" line as I will be upgrading every year if they do so.

The Apple App Store may have a lot of apps, but most of them are ridiculously bad and not worth it. All of the apps I used on my previous iPhone are available on Android. I will admit that the facebook app on the iPhone is much better. So I can understand your concern here. But again, I'm perfectly happy with the android app store at the moment.

I'm sorry, but I disagree the Evo has way more pluses than what you have listed. To name just a few big ones for me:

1- Notifications. I hope you enjoy trying to play a game or demoing your phone to somebody and you get a nice pop-up message from a text message. Then you click close and your game restarts or some other annoying issue.

2- Get time stamps with every text message sent and not a time stamp once every 15 minutes.

3- I'm not required to place all of my apps on one of my homescreens. (whether in a folder or not) I like how I can view all of my apps on one screen rather than having to swipe through all of my home screens to find where I placed it.

4-Widgets, enough said.

Granted, all of the above I mentioned can be fixed with jailbreaking, but to quote you:

Really, so an iPhone can act as a mobile hotspot for wireless devices over 3G and/or 4G?

The iPhone can provide me a way to easily turn on bluetooth, gps, wifi and turn off those as well with the press of 1 button?

And that's only naming a couple of things that I use quite frequently.

The iPhone has a few apps that cannot be deleted on it as well, but those still require space on your home screen. Android they are just stored in the app drawer so you don't have to ever view them if you don't want to go into your apps and just place the ones you'll use on your homescreens. However, this is a reason why some people choose to root/jailbreak. To remove those apps that are "forced" on us.

Too much is NOT good sometimes! And filtering the crap apps from time to time isn't a bad idea at all!

One point I actually agree with. Which is why I run a very simple setup on my Evo 4G. And with Android I can either make my setup more complicating or simple. That's my choice and I love it. Customization on Android devices is amazing, especially for those of us who like to be creative.

Sounds like the Evo 4G/android platform may be a bit too complicated for you to use. I don't have to google to find anything on my phone but I love that it's an option if I ever need to. The iPhone does have the spotlight thing that is also pretty good as well.

If you're currently using the stock launcher (Sense) you have access to what htc calls "Scenes." I would personally create a new scene and call it batterysaver. In this new scene, get rid of any widget that constantly updates. Run this scene when you need battery life. Then switch to another one when you get home. It doesn't take long to switch and it's a nice feature.

It sounds to me like you've already made up your choice in your phone and didn't really give android a chance. But as dan330 pointed out, the iPhone is headed to Verizon so it sounds like that may be what you're looking for.

We have a customer retention program at work, and it's ridiculous! I should just be able to jump in and make things happen. I have WAY too little time to worry about 'figuring things out'.

In this day and age, it should just work and work right without having to mess with it. i.e. iPhone!

I did rEVOke the EVO last night...now what! LOL...have to do some research.

Oh, and it's called "Folders" I LOVE that stuff! I hate not having enough screens to put all my apps on, and then have to scroll through that long list of apps to find what I need...iPhone has the layout that all others should emulate!

Man whenever I see these threads about the iPhone being the "best" I don't even bother reading them. If the difference between the EVO and the iPhone is that drastic for you then suck it up and go back to AT&T. What's the point of keeping the phone if you aren't completely satisfied with it?

AT&T service and data reliability sucks. I phone has a crappy camera. Android is flexible, pretty robust with very low overhead. And i just read AT&T was rated the worst for network reliability and customer support. ATT overextended themselves and whored out the Iphone to beat Verizon. Once iphone is available to other carriers ATT will fail and probably merge with another company. That being said my EVO is probably the best device i have used. BTW Ive been in information technology for over 12 years so i also know what the hell I'm talking about.

I'm sorry, but for somebody who considers themselves VERY tech savvy but then complains that the Evo 4G is too complicated, then you're actually not very tech savvy at all. Android is about customization, if you spend about 5-10 minutes customizing the phone to fit your needs then you can have it far simpler than what it comes out of the box. And don't tell me you don't spend time configuring your iPhone, I had to configure that just as much as I had to configure my Evo 4G.

Android has folders too. And if you have that many apps to where you can't arrange them across seven home screens within folders, etc... Then wow is all I can say.

iOS is very clunky in this regard. If I have 5+ home screens full of apps, I guarantee you I'm not going to remember where EVERY single app is, so therefore I'm going to be searching for it. However, with Android I can pull up my app list in alphabetical order and go right to it. I can choose to use spotlight on the iPhone but it's just more steps. Whereas with Android I press one button then scroll right to it.

Based on what you're looking for, android will never be close for you. It's not going to be 100% simple out of the box. It will have far more functionality and features out of the box, it's just up to the end-user to configure and simplify the phone to meet their needs. Which for being so tech savvy I would expect you to understand.

We need a review with common "sense." If you're extremely tech savvy, it should be easy to see that apples to apples, the Evo kills the 3Gs in every technical statistic. The processor, ROM, RAM, Display, removable memery, removable/replaceable battery, HDMI out, cameras, wifi hot spot, tethering, etc, etc, etc. It's unfair to even compare the two phones since the 3G came out a year before the Evo. The 4G is the only iPhone that lines up with the Evo and even that's lacking to some users.

The only accurate part of your review was that the App Store is 100x better than the Android Market which I agree with 100%. But I have an iPod iTouch. I have iPod interfaces in my vehicles and I'm not going to take my Evo jogging. I'm not much into app surfing but I've got the App Store right there if there's something I just can't live without that's not available on Android. If I want to use JBM's Ballistic App, no need to by a phone that tells me what to do nor deal with ATT or Verizon's ridiculous prices.

We're all different but I didn't buy a smart phone to play Tower Madness and Billy Frontier on. I bought a phone that I can access the real internet from, that I can customize to my taste and needs, and that can manage and keep me in touch with my life. The 4G could accomplish most of that, but I'm just not an iPhan I guess.

Those that go with the Android platform love the flexibility and the choices available to them. If I don't like one carrier for whatever reason I can go to another one and still be able to choose Android. With Iphone I'm locked into ATT (Verizon in the future) and locked into what I can do with "MY" device. I agree some people don't like to tinker or customize. They just want stuff to turn on and work. But I think a lot of Android users like to be able to customize and tinker with their phones and in the process LEARN something new.
